Jan trumped me today

Over the years I have kept my college and trade school diplomas safely tucked away in a safe deposit box, but a few weeks ago I got the bright idea to photo copy them and frame the copies on our computer room wall.

As I look back on my 55 years of work I have amassed two Air Force Honorable Discharges and 7 college & technical school diplomas so once I saw them all matted and framed I was feeling pretty proud of myself.

Then I turned to Jan and asked her if she had any certificates she would like to put up with mine?

She said, "Sure, I got a couple" and next thing I know she is showing me her certificate of retirement for 33 years civil service with the USAF and a large certificate of achievement for participation in Desert Shield & Desert Storm, then she hauled out a small letter I am sharing with you all....

A thankyou letter signed by President Bill Clinton for her 33 years service. (by her request I have blocked out the last name and street address)

I guess that trumps my piddly tech school diplomas....LOL

WOW! Applause to her and to you as well. My DHserved (and I as "dependent" (haha)" and we both are proud of all Americans who serve their country with such pride and respect. Thank you for jobs well done.

I am SO SORRY! I'm just recovering from a knee transplant enough to sit at the computer for more than a few minutes, so I haven't been on gardenweb in over a month. I had no idea Jan was so sick. Thoughts and prayers for her family and friends. She was unique and delightful and will be missed. Plant swaps just won't be the same without her and Terry. How do you think a comparison of the top to the bottom of income earners is meaningful? If you put an upper limit on earnings, those people would simply move to other countries (where they'd be welcomed) and often take the companies they lead and the jobs those create with them. Do you want them to leave Canada? The term economic democracy was new to me, I had to look it up. The definition I found was nebulous. "Economic democracy" as a concept seems to have as little to do with political "democracy" as it has to do with "economic" freedom. What does it mean to you? What are you trying to say?

Jan didn't trump you. You both admirably served your country, and a grateful Nation thanks you both...equally! She's lucky to have gotten a letter from the President; that doesn't happen every day.

Personally signed? I am very impressed. When I retired after 31 years with the federal government, all I got was a pensionletter.

Those letters are not personally signed. In 1969 when I volunteered in Ted Kennedy's Senate office in D.C., my first assignment was to use the signing machine to sign letters, He had several different versions of signatures. A staff member would note whether the letter was to be signed "Ted" or "Edward M. Kennedy".
Congrats to you and Jan for your diplomas and letters. You both deserved to be recognized.

Jan, I don't think Linda meant to be inconsiderate, by saying the signatures weren't signed personally, but whatever, I give thumbs up for your recognition.

Those documents are great! I have nothing that compares. I do have my college diploma and 7 or 8 patents with my name on them. This gives me an idea of what to do with those.

For some reason, I have kept all my grade school final report cards. These began during WW2 and their illustrations reflect that period. My second grade card is unusual in that it is signed by the county superintendent of schools. Most likely, the cards of my sister and me were the only cards signed by the county official that year.

[The war had depleted the countyside of renter families and their children. We were the only students in school that year and the achool board had proposed to close the school for 1 year and open it again the following year when there would be more students. My mother prevailed upon the school board arguing that it would delay our finising high school by a year and that was too high of a price to place upon us. The school board hired an intern teacher who had finished all her requirements except for a practice teaching session. The county superintnedent of schools served as her supervisor and signed the final report cards to make those legal. She got her certification and we got a year of near private instructions. It was the best school year that my sister and I have ever had.]
