Update on my DB

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Sat. night, he had a heart attack, as I posted before. I didn't take time this a.m. to give details. He had a 50% blockage on one side in the main artery right at the heart. On the other side, he had 3 at 90% blockage. They did a 5 way bypass. Dr. said it was a difficult surgery because he is deep chested and the heart was very deep. Everything went as expected otherwise. He is 43.

Wow Tami, he is young. What is causing the blockages? Do they know?

I am very sorry to hear about your mom - but now she is in peace How are you taking everything? OK I hope. The diuertics Yes it did help me, at first I tool them every day, Now (2 years later) I only take them when I am swollen. You can tell if you take your shin & press on it with a couple fingers ( right next to the bone, in the middle) hold it for a couple seconds, let go and if there is a dent & it takes a couple seconds to level off. You have allot of water in you system, take your pills. When I was prescribed the water pill (Bumetanine 1mg), the doctor also prescibed a pill that acts a loop to keep my potassium level up(water pills can lower your potassium) This pill was called Spironolactone 50mg. So I was told to take them together. The fruit is very good & don't worry if this is all you can eat, you body will tell you when you need something else. (sometimes this is all I eat) The Lactalose- Yes it is BAD it make me sick too! this is a laxative, but it also works with to fight the ammonia in the blood (which can cause memory loss) I never did take it very much but I was prescribed a power drink (Cholestyramine 4mg Powder)Two timea a day & it helps me a lot better. Constipation- Yes you have to always stay on top of that!! you are suppost to have 3 or 4 lose bowel movements a day. If I get constipated The bile backs up into my blood & causes me to itch, BAD! I bleed from these lestions on my skin. Its really bad I had to take light treatments 3 time a week with UVB rays, This did help. The AC - this is normal I did the same thing! Hes very sick. Never thinks about drinking again - this is great so if you have to deal with his smoking so be it , One thing at a time. When I ws in the hospital they told my mother I was not going to make it though the night, but then I did, but it seems like I have such a different out look on things, and I too said I would never drink again. And I still say that, matter of fact, I do not talerate drunks!! ANyway I started smoking too, but now I am thinking that I am going to quite because I am in tune with my body, and smoking is only hurting it, PLUS I just found out it is a big factor on liver cirrohsis. and I think to myself if I stopped drinking over night I can stop smoking too! What are some of the meds he takes? I have read & I take Ursodiol/Actigal 300mg 3x a day. this is a galstone med, but I have read a lot of people say this has helped there itching a lot. Night walking - I do the same thing & I eat most then too. They gave me sleeping pills. The thrush mouth, I get this every time I eat something that is not good for me. Recipes - Yes I will type some and send them. should I type them in this or e-mail them to you? OH! what is DB? What is your bothers name & how old is he? if you want you can let him ask me some stuff that is bothering him. that helps me a lot when I can talk to other people with the same. From time to time at Hallmark Card stores at the checkout counters in this area they have small pocket angels. They are about the size of a nickel and are made of some type of metal. I don't know if they are actually called pocket angels at Hallmark, but that's what they were called at the store where I bought some a few years ago that wasn't a Hallmark store. I'm sorry I don't remember what store I purchased those from, but I have definitely seen them at Hallmark since then. If you don't have a Hallmark in your area, maybe you can purchase a small charm that is used for a charm bracelet. I'll bet they have four leaf clovers or crosses or angels. That is sweet of you to do that. I'll keep your sister in law in my thoughts so that she may safely get through this. Linda

We have Pebble Sheen - we see the same thing with the lights on at night. It's like trying on swimsuits in the dressing room under the wrong lights. You feel pretty darn good about your body trying on swimsuits at home in your bathroom, and wearing your little bikini out to the pool/beach in the sun. Then you decide you want another swimsuit and you try them on at the store with those mean ol' flourescent lights, and you want to make a run for lipo pronto, even though you never even considered it before and hate any sort of pain!! Your pool is the same - the lights at night are not nice to all of the normal little hills and bumps. The overall look, I am sure, is beautiful.

He is young. My DH had one at 47, but didn't have a bypass, just stents put in. It's a scary thing at such a young age. DH's was his cholesterol.....which he has to watch very carefully. I'm glad you brother came through his bypass ok so far. Keeping my fingers crossed for a full recovery.

I'm glad to hear he's doing okay. I hope he continues to recuperate.

DH had his first heart attack when he was 43 and he's 70 now, almost 71.

Thank heavens they were able to do the surgery. Although the age is young, so much can be done now - my father was well cared for throughout his life with a major heart condition. I have faith that your brother will live a long life and feel a world better once he recovers from this surgery.

Oh my goodness, that is young to have such an operation. But on the other hand, his age, should mean his recovery will be easier.

Tami, thank God he got to the hospital in time he is very lucky to have survived such a dangerous heart attack.
He has a lot of years ahead, if he takes good care of himself. Wishes for a speedy recovery.

When I talked to DM yesterday, one of the things I thought of was how he eats but DM said that they eat very healthy. Mostly they live on chicken and veggies except the occasional take out. but I know he deals with a lot of stress. He is very active though. His two youngest kids do a lot os sports and I know he used to coach his youngests baseball team. So the heart attack could have been brought on by any number of things.

My cousin Judy (age 59) had a massive heart attack just before Christmas, she had three operations (one bypass,then quadruple bypass and then a pacemaker implant). She is doing fine, is home, can drive, and I owe it all to my Kitchen Table Angels Prayers for her!

It could also be hereditary. I know it is, but it could be other factors besides the stress Pets mentioned. Dad's family has a history of heart trouble. I believe very strongly in the KT Angels Prayers! That's why I posted.

Best wishes to everyone!

Encourage him into Cardiac Rehab; not only will it be suggested, his health insurance may warrant it for future coverage....he may go until he feels good and then want to stop.... DO NOT let that happen.... he needs encouragement to continue...not only to build his heart but his physical & mental outlook! (I worked for a LV Cardiologist for 6 years)

Tami, good to hear that all went well with your brothers bypass. My DH had 4 bypasses done at age 43. That was 25 years ago. Nine years after the first surgery, he had to have 3 of those bypasses redone. Since then, he has had 5 stents placed in heart arteries. Through all of this he has continued to live a full life. He is 68 now. A man 30 years younger would have a hard time keeping up with him. Given todays advances in medicine your brother can do very well. I am a firm believer in a heart/diabetes diet (Dh has also been diabetic for the last 10 years) and plenty of exercise.
