Find a Grave People...Wow

I just want to thank Alisande and others for posting about this website. My dad is now looking at his uncle's gravesite as I type this. Flem died of TB back in 1939 at the age of 27. He was buried without a head stone. There is a small circular marker only. The woman who went and took the pictures also found a census record of his birth. My dad thought he was in his 30s when he died. All he knew is that he died young and of TB all these years. Flem was my grandfather's only brother and my dad told me yesterday he had no pictures of him, but somehow he managed to find one. My brother e-mailed it to me today:

I'm planning on putting a headstone on his grave by the end of next summer. I don't know how I'm going to do this long distance but I think it's sad there is nothing there to say who this person was. I'm thinking I can have one ordered on-line by an Albuquerque business and they will have it placed. It will be simple and flat, as it looks like the ones around it are.

I don't know who the kid in the picture is, some friend's child? There is writing on the back of the picture but it's not all legible. Flem was never married. My dad was only around 8 when he died and doesn't remember being around him. The kids weren't allowed around the adults with TB. I know his dad and step-mother both had it and my dad was sent to live with his grandparents some time after his mother died.

That's really wonderful! He looked like such a nice young man. The handwriting says "Indian boy;" I don't see any last name.

Oh! Now I see it, for some reason I thought it was the name of his parents, couldn't read it...but now I see it.

I have a question about Find-a-grave, too - My uncle is buried in a National Cemetery and I was going to edit his family relationship details, linking him to his parents, but there's no way to do so on his listing. It says his memorial was created from the National Cemetery database. Is that why? And do you know how I can request to be allowed to do so? I can add a photo, but nothing else.

I have wanted for a very long time to find the graves of my great great grandfather. I haven't driven far from home for several years but decided to go a couple of weeks ago. I knew the name of the cemetery and I remembered being there when I was 4 years old - 80 now. I even remembered approximately where it was in the cemetery. It was quite a lengthy drive but I found it and very quickly, after arrival. I don't remember being so thrilled about anything for a very long time, if ever. Last week, I tried to find my great grandfather's grave which was still quite a distance for someone who hasn't been driving far. I found it too. Got turned in directions a couple of times but got home safely. Sometime when I know I am going to have a few days of extra time, I want to check out ancestery.com. It is too bad we get interested in genealogy when the older family members are gone and we have no one to ask.

I agree with Maire....I suspect the number of FindAGrave volunteers anywhere is relatively small. Most people I've talked to about my gravestone photography never even heard of the site. The other thing is that it's not always easy to fill requests. St. Mary's sounds like a big cemetery, which means someone knowledgeable needs to be contacted to point the way to the graves in question. And sometimes the graves can't be found. I've photographed entire small cemeteries without finding graves that were requested. Either the person was buried somewhere else or the gravestone fell over or sunk into the ground. I drove down to W-B the other day and passed the Hollenback Cemetery. It looked interesting. I couldn't stop, but looked it up when I got home. According to FindAGrave, it has over 6,000 interments and is 73% photographed. So someone must be volunteering in the area. Or did so in the past.

Just out of curiosity I googled the church and this is what I found: http://www.isletapueblo.com/

I just claimed a photo finding expedition for someone on Find a Grave! lol! I am so excited, going to go tomorrow if I can drag myself up early in the morning. It's a gravesite that was moved from what looks like Taylorsville Lake when the lake was made. Now I'm curious as to when that was. It's about 45 minutes away from me.

I just registered, and I was able to find
DH's Mom, Dad and sisters gravesite. A distant
relative of theirs is doing the whole family tree
it looks like! It's great. DH got to see it.

"Where" are y'all "going" on there to search for these graves?
I can't seem to find my way around.
Maybe it's because I'm on dial-up.
Or, MAYBE it's because I don't know what I'm doing!:)

I signed up but couldn't find my grandparents. I know their names only. Never saw any photos. I'll try Find A Grave aain. I'm pretty sure I know the name of the cemetery, Forest Lawn in Buffalo NY.

Kath, I'm confused by your confusion. LOL What picture can't you find? Maybe one of us can help you. And did you end up looking for that grave to photograph (the one that was requested)?

LOL, sorry, I just find it hard to navigate and get turned around until I just happen to find where I need to be. Apparently you can only have up to five pictures, so the woman who found his gravesite took one off so I could load his picture back. So, it was never posted because there were too many.

No, about the other grave. I was so excited but today has been so busy. I'm planning on going after our trip down south tomorrow. We are headed for a train ride near the Tennessee border tomorrow. On our way home I want to stop at the cemetery to try and find the grave. I think it'll be fun. Alex is coming home tonight and going with us tomorrow.

Oh, and the girls were disappointed we weren't heading to New Mexico to find Flem's grave anymore. We may have to make a quick trip later to see the new headstone now. ( :
