Ziplock Bag Books

our 6 little greatgrandkids for Christmas. The pages were glued back to back, inserted in ziplock sandwich bags, then the pages were hot glued together. The spine of the book was taped with clear packing tape, then with colored duct tape. All of the colors and all of the alphabet are in the books. What a long, long project this has been, and a costly one too in ink. A dear friend of mine designed the covers, with each child's name on the front, for me.

Julius is our eldest greatgrandson and I am "Gigi" (for Great Grandma) to the little ones. Here is one of the covers:

I had a little trouble at first b4 I got familiar with doing it. A few I discovered I had just not zipped up in the first place b4 trying to vacuuming them. Silly me. I try to get as much air out as possible when I zip them, and then have found the nozzle has to be in the right position to vacuum. If it doesn't vacuum, just try a bit of a different angle, if you haven't already. I haven't found any bags to be defective. Sue

Thanks all. I'll try potting the EE's in snug pots and ease off the watering. Nearly 100% of my Caladium bulbs do great when potting indoors in early Spring. 10 of 30 of my pots have sprouts now. This year the Burning Hearts and Heart's Delights are coming up the quickest. The previous 2 yrs I think the Brandywines came up or were one of the first. OT but while I'm here I'll post a pic of my Alocasia Variegated (so says the label) I recently got for $12 at a local nursery. It's about 1ft tall and has a pup sprouting from the soil. I would like to know what variety of Alocasia it is. The petioles are variegated too. Most of the variegated Alocasia pics I've seen on-line were Alocasia macrorrhizas but this seems smaller like an Alocasia gageana california.

When I was teaching we would make class books that way. Each child's page would be put in and then they would take turns taking the books home.

Neat idea for your grandkids.

mboston, how did you bind your books for the children?

My books are 20 pages. I tried sewing, but it was too thick and I broke the presser foot on my sewing machine.

We used tape like you. I did also try the binders things that come on the colored plastic report covers we used to have for papers we did in school. If the book wasn't too thick, those worked. However it could be removed. I put the opening to the ziplock bag on the outside because we would often remove the pages and reuse the baggie book.

For the larger book pages how about using the clear see thru sheet protectors??

Thanks everyone. The zippered part is in the spine of these books so the little ones can't take them apart.

you could use pop rivets to hold the many pages together at the spine. just put a line of them down in a row and then do the tape over them. You probably would have to poke a hole in first for the pop rivet gun to get it through all of them. A pop rivet gun will hold 2 pieces of metal together so this would be pretty simple I think. A pop rivet gun is a very handy tool to have.
