About those Vac/Ziplock type bags.

Do any of you have trouble getting them to vacuum sometimes? I'll keep trying them, but they just don't seem to want to vacuum seal.

I had a little trouble at first b4 I got familiar with doing it. A few I discovered I had just not zipped up in the first place b4 trying to vacuuming them. Silly me.

I try to get as much air out as possible when I zip them, and then have found the nozzle has to be in the right position to vacuum. If it doesn't vacuum, just try a bit of a different angle, if you haven't already. I haven't found any bags to be defective.

The only problem I had was when I tried to vac a bag of oyster crackers. I finally discovered the problem. There were a couple of teeny, tiny crumbs in the zipper slot that was causing the problem.

And what to do in the winter. :) Go to Home Depot and buy a lot of the filmy white "sewer" cloth in the outside garden section. Fold to cut bags like 6x6 inches with the bottom a fold to make it easier. Now staple the 2 sides making a bag. Maybe spray with surround If you have problems before the fruit start coloring (nectarines) or curculio. Then thin ( I keep my trees low and wide like the Japanese who bag everything. After thinning to a min. 6" apart to 8" slip the bags over the fruit and the branch, pinch together and secure with a paper clip with some body. Not the really thin wire kind. This has many advantages. the birds don't see the fruit nor the squirrels for a while. Also you can spray like captan on the bags for bitter rot and the tree and get much less on the apples. also brown rot for instance does not spread from fruit to fruit and ruin all. I am experimenting with serenade and 1 cup molasses per gallon of water as a good fungicide. Unlike sulfur which we cannot use in the heat the molasses mix caused no damage to trees or fruit. Also it breathes! plastic could set mildew pretty good I think altho I use newspaper bags on my papayas as soon as petals almost gone for fruit fly with holes from a knife point thruout and the bottom corners cut. They will last 2 years with care. Rinse thoroly in in something fungicidal at the end of the season, dry and store. hope this makes you a happy camper. I love having almost all perfect fruits. Oh, on the wasps. Try making either a very large pot of partly cooked dry northern beans left in the pot to ferment with say 4 " of top space OR spare fruits fermenting. They should go in and all drown.

Hi Wildchild, Are you from SoCal too? It's pretty lonely here with our views sometimes. Don't even get me started on bottled water, lol. When exactly did tap water become poisenous? Why don't people know that if it's in the tap water, it's also in those plastic bottles, being that it comes from the same tap? you could use pop rivets to hold the many pages together at the spine. just put a line of them down in a row and then do the tape over them. You probably would have to poke a hole in first for the pop rivet gun to get it through all of them. A pop rivet gun will hold 2 pieces of metal together so this would be pretty simple I think. I got mine at Micheals...about $3.50 for 100, i think. I alos cut the bottom half off of envelopes from junk offers (envelopes I plan to throw away) and i can write on those - when I colllected them, what color, ect. But, that is mainly for my own collection.

There seems to be a fly in the ointment, fairly often in life.

Getting things stuck in zippers is not the best ...

P.S. I'd like to see you vacuum out the surplus vapour in one of those ziploc bags with that Amish friendship bread starter in it ...

... and keep it that way for long!

I use the bags and suck out the air with a straw,,,cheap and it works,and the grandkids are entertained...aint life grand?

I did like Caroline til Anna gave me some of the new ones for Christmas. She knows I like gadgets. I haven't had a problem but I haven't used them that often either.

I use mine several times a day. And, yep, it helps if you zip the bag closed first. LOL
I roll or squeeze all the air out I can, zip 'er up and vacuum. Haven't had any problems.
Can't believe I've had it almost two months and haven't had to change the batteries yet.
I'm more than impressed with mine.

I really like mine too, but I've had a couple of the bags not want to vacuum not matter how I twist the vacuum thingy, or clean out the track. (I only had to clean out the track of a bag that I had coffee beans in, and when I dumped some out, some flecks got into the track.) The other one is a brand new gallon size I put tortillas in, and there is nothing in the track.

I got one awhile back and love it. It works as good or better than the big expensive one sitting in the closet!
