I'm home, and a word about funerals...

I have been lucky enough to not have attended a funeral in many years, until this last two months. After being at services for both my grandparents recently, I learned how much it helps the family to have friends stand up and say something about the deceased loved one.

When, during the service, the minister asked for people to share, many of my grandparents' friends (mostly from church) stood up and shared a sweet memory or nice little habit they liked/admired about my grandparents. I didn't know most of these people, but it was just so comforting to hear how much they touched other people lives. I would not have known how much difference those little anecdotes make. Now I do. It's nice to sit around with family and share stories we all remember. But it also so comforting to have so many people say "Let me tell you how your grandmother made my life nice..."

I've sent a couple cards of sympathy in the last couple years and made sure to include some little story story I remember fondly of the person. But I did it hoping I wasn't sounding too corny or inadequate, hoping it was well received. Now I know how much it does help and will always make sure to do that, either in a card or at a service.

Just a few words can be as warm as a hug, and more lasting.
