Really Sad Day!!

Seven years ago today my sister died. Today was a viewing for another sister. Her funeral is tomorrow. One bright spot is it is our youngest daughter's 37th birthday..

Thank you again so much. I cried long and hard this morning after everyone else left for school and work. The house is dreadfully quiet. Last night I woke up at 4:30 a.m. because I'm so used to having to get Casey up to go to the bathroom at around that time. It will be a while before I can sleep through the night again, I'm sure. Annz, what you said has helped me immeasurably to know I did the right thing. I was really thrown for a loop when the vet began discussing treating her and I've been plagued with guilt that I didn't think harder about giving it a try. I must have known in my heart that she was too far gone and that it was inevitable that the end was near either way. But hearing your words comforted me so much. My sister (the only other person I know personally who is as much a bonafide animal-crazy person as I am) told me essentially the same thing. She owns a pet-sitting business and they have had anywhere from 4-7 pets of their own (they, too, have had to put a couple of their pets to sleep during the past couple of years). She told me that renal failure is extremely serious and that Casey was so fortunate to have lasted as long as she did. It helps assure me that I did what was best for my girl. You're all right, though -- it really does just hurt like crazy. It almost takes my breath away at times. I'm grateful that I've been able to spill my heart out here, as I really have no one else who quite understands my grief, other than my sweet sister. In an odd way, I feel like the experience is giving me something, though. I hope this doesn't sound strange, but I've been grappling with feelings of guilt for all the things I didn't do for Casey (should have cleaned her ears and teeth more often, should have gotten her groomed more often, should have taken better care of her, should have walked her more, etc.) I suppose it's all a part of the grief, but it's pointed out to me not to take others for granted. There are a lot of things in my family life and even with friends, etc. that I realize I've been taking for granted, being "too busy" is really the excuse. I'm oddly comforted by the notion that I have the opportunity to stop taking these relationships for granted and really show them how much I care. I don't want to have "regrets" where anyone else is concerned. I don't mean any of this to sound strange. I know Casey had a good life and she absolutely knew she was loved. I just feel like maybe her legacy is to remind me how much I love not only her, but so many others in my life. I'll get through this one day at a time.

Wow, I'm really sorry that you had to deal with that. It sounds like you definitely need to move on to the "tough love" part of parenting with her. And I totally agree with Dana about what to say to her comment about the jewelry. If she had asked and not stolen it, it would be a completely different story (not that you would have said yes, but it would have shown respect for you.) I also agree with how to handle the younger ones....they do need to understand that this is unacceptable....and that it is about what she did, not what they did! This reinforces why I have taken a hard line with my 20 y/o SD -- who stole from me last summer (over and over!). I will not allow her in my house alone because she has shown that she cannot be trusted. Yours has too and you need to show her that these are the consequences for her behavior (don't know about yours, but my SD never had any consequences for her behavior.....her mother either accepted the obvious lies from her daughter, lied to us about it, or made it excuses for her. Like you, we have another younger child watching all of this and this is an important lesson for them too -- we cannot and will not tolerate disrespect, lying, stealing, etc.....and there will be consequences for breaking the rules (not just house rules, but the rules you need to live by in our society in order to be successful and have some integrity!). Well, I just read an article from a Chicago newspaper. Seems that although they are not closing the Chicago plant they are eliminating 600 of the 1200 jobs from the Chicago plant and moving them to Mexico where they said it is cheaper to make the cookies. BOOOOOO! Will still be boycotting Oreos. I long for the days when things said "Made in the USA". FYI, I also boycott Hobby Lobby. EVERYTHING in that place is made in China. I do have a few principles:/. Darn!

Susie, I'm so sorry for your loss, for the loss of both of your sisters. I'll keep you in my thoughts tomorrow and wish you peace. I'm glad the date holds a blessing for you with your daughters birthday and hope its not too sad for you, one generation slipping away as another moves forward.

So sorry to hear about your sister. Losing a sibling must be very painful. I'm glad you can celebrate with your daughter, though. My oldest daughter's birthday was yesterday--her 40th. Today would have been my 48th wedding anniversary. Things converge...

So sorry for your loss! It's just kind of strange how the same day can be so sad for one person and so celebratory for another. Life just goes on.......sometimes sadly, sometimes joyfully. May better days come for you!

Your youngest daughter must be a particularly bright joy to you.

So sorry for the loss of your sisters. I lost my sister twenty years ago. Her three daughters are such a blessing to me. I see so much of my sister in her youngest, it warms my heart. May your daughters continue to bring joy to your life!
