FMW..saw a comercial that reminded me of you..

I think it was a Walmart comercial...

The mother was sending her daughter off to school...She drew a heart in the palm of her hand so if she need reassurance during the day all she had to do was look at the heart and know momma loved her.

Pattico....I saw this commercial too the other day and cried. Have you seen the Oreo commercial? It's the one where the older kid helps the younger kids dip his oreo at lunch....I cried! She is loving school and I am getting used to it. My dh will hopefully be home towards the end of this next week. We can't wait.
Kids are in bed and I am enjoying a nice quiet evening.

I mentioned the story The Kissing Hand, well now that the first day of school has come and gone, I'll tell the storyline. The little raccoon that is to go off to school knows he will miss his Mom so she kisses his palm of his hand and says "I love you" and tells him that if he starts missing her, to put the hand with the kiss on it up to his face and remember what she said. So the night (of course) he goes off to school he tells her to give him her hand and he does the same thing to his Mom. A real tear jerker. I used to read it the first thing in my class and the kids had to go home and tell the parents about it. Of course, they knew already cause the PTA would have someone read to them at the PTA Boo Hoo Breakfast. After I retired, I got to go back and be the one reading it to the parents. Plus we did several of the silly songs we would do in class the first few days of school like Tooty Ta and Will You Be My Friend? Imagine a 200 lb football player dad up there in front of everyone with his eyes closed, tongue sticking out, turning around with his booty stuck out saying "Tooty Ta, Tooty Ta, Tooty Ta Ta!" Quite the sight!

From my brief time in a portion of Australia (granted, the portion where the majority of Australians live) I can say the gardening culture there is more "serious" than the US. (Not that it would take much lol.) It is a commonwealth country after all, settled mostly by the English. It definitely helps that it's a climate where year round gardening is possible. Even though they seemingly have a lot of land and very few people, much of the outback isn't suited to conventional agriculture. So the land use patterns reminded me more of Europe (the UK specifically) or the denser parts of the US. Melbourne and Sydney and their suburbs would remind people much more of London or the San Francisco Bay area than say, Atlanta. Even if the climate differences weren't taken into account. There isn't miles and miles of exurban sprawl with hundreds of thousands of housing units on well and septic. It's denser suburbs clustered around commuter rail lines that often quickly give way to open agricultural land past where the lines end. When people have a limited amount of land and/or places with over 1/4 acre of land are hard to purchase and insanely expensive, they tend to make more with what they've got. Just for kicks, for example, I looked for places for sale in the Blue Mountains with 1 hectare or more of land. It would be at least 5x harder and maybe 2X as expensive to buy such places as in say, the outer suburbs of Philly, DC, or Baltimore. Exceptions would be, for example, the Dandenongs outside Melbourne, where there is a lot of older, sometimes stately housing stock on larger lots and quaint village centers, sort of similar to say, Bucks Co, PA, Weston, MA, North Shore of Chicago, etc. (even the western US ended up a little more like Europe in this regard, especially California, more because of water and geographical issues than an absolute shortage of land) But, again, because people had to pay more for such acre or more properties than they would have in various American cities, they are making the most of the garden space. And some of the private gardens I saw driving around were very impressive.

"RC - most likely his gt5000 has a 48" or larger deck PLUS the addt'l 44 swisher - that's nearly an 8 foot swath he's cutting vs yer $7-10 k ZTR with mebbe a 5-6 foot cut. He can run as fast as you - the little 8-10 hp engine on that swisher won't burn that mush fuel... yeah, he's gonna be back in the garage whilst you are still out there sweating/cutting and yeah, he can drive the rig relaxed with one hand on the straightaways while you are herding yer ZTR with both hands trying keep a straight line cut - all the time on them straightaways... :)' ha ha ha, LOL! Yea right! He can blow that smoke some where else because I know better. By the time RC got turned around the first time I'd be on my second turn around grinning at him like a jackass eating greenbriar. LMAO!

beavis, I am slowly working my way through all the post that happened while I've been away. Donna gave you great information with that link. I would pull the sucker (baby) off the long neck and repot it into the suggested mix (1:1:1 peat/perlite/vermiculite) that is in a good container. The remaining neck that has nothing on it - Give it a good funeral :) Once you've "created" a new neck on the huge crown that broke off, it will be ready to pot. Take the healthiest of those leaves that you broke off in creating the new neck and pot them down too in other containers. Just like your momma mulitiplied her love, you'll be mulitplying that plant and you'll have a whole set of reminders. Keep us posted please.......and share some pictures if you're able. Try using a pickle mix from Mrs. Wages. I can't even come close to the taste they offer and use them for both vinegar based and fermented pickles. I also grow Music garlic and fresh dill. Each jar gets several cut up cloves of garlic and several branches of dill weed leaves, as well as seed heads that are still swelled and green. Mrs. Wages have two dill types and also offer B&B and even a sweet mixed. These packets contain the essential oils and spices as well as the salt. Ball also make pickle mixes, but I found that they add sugar to a dill pickle and thats not something I want, unless I am making hamburger dills which are slightly sweet, To reduce the issue of mush, do it in a BWB instead. A fermented pickle needs almost no vinegar, as its based on the salt in the brine that produces lactic acid. Once fully fermented, you can place the jars in the fridge. I make a half sour that way, but only allow a 3 day fermentation, then add a tablespoon of vinegar to stop it, and place them in the fridge. They last almost a year without getting mushy. Another help is adding calcium chloride as a buffer to vinegar. It will slow down the softening effects vinegar has on cucumbers.

Well now, all this is news to me. I have no idea of Tooty Ta.

Our kindergartners baked a gingerbread boy the first day of school. (Our library has a stove. It used to be a home ec room.)

Anyhow, when the teacher takes the kids to get the cookie out of the oven, they discover he has run away. So they walk all over the school asking if each person visited has seen their gingerbread boy. They visit the music room, the library, the principal's office (and he tells them to be careful when they walk home from school by checking both ways before they cross the street at the corner), the computer lab, the nurse, the school secretary, etc. It is really a cute day!

Sheila Joyce - check the book out. It's by Audrey Penn. There are even printouts you can get if you google it online.

Our school was set up like a village and my classroom was the Toy Store - fit in perfectly for kindergarten and my mission statement was "Learning to Play with Others and Playing to Learn." The first month focused on Bears and Friends and the kids were invited to bring their favorite bears (or other stuffed friends) to school with them each day. Of course, ones were provided for those who didn't. (This was before all the restrictions that came in place due to head lice and fire safety crap). With the help of my fellow crazy teachers, I would read Corduroy and of course had my own large Corduroy bear that suddenly disappeared while we were out of the room. He left a scrawled note on the board that he was curious and decided to go look around the school. So off we went with our bears in arm to find the missing Couduroy. Like your Gingerbread Man, we visited all the different places and each time he would leave a note or tell the teacher/person where he was going next. He always ended up in the principal's lap where she was reading a story to him.

We did the Gingerbread Man in our first nine weeks too and would do the baking. Fun days. One reason I retired when I did was I felt the emphasis had changed so much and even though I was the most academically orientated K teacher, we spent so much time testing the kids, there was little time in our full days to enjoy my mission. Our K classes no longer have the Housekeeping Centers or rest time. All work, no play makes for a boring teacher!

I'll look on my CD's and get back with the title of the one Tooty Ta is on.

My copy is on a mixed Cd someone made me but I googled it and its on Dr. Jean and Friends CD. If you google it, there are a number of videos that show kids doing the song in class and also adults at weddings! How funny that would be! You can't help but laugh.

I love that Oreo commercial where the big kid helps the younger kid, who in turn open the milk carton for a third boy. LOVE IT!
