We have one hen, so she is a big help, but I have also bought from our market, as they have signs up stating all their eggs are from local farmers.

Yep, I will continue to eat them 'over easy'. Life is too short to get paranoid about everything. Also, you have no assurance that your free-range and organic eggs are any safer.

Salmonella is in chicken poo, so unless the shells are sterilized, they can be affected. Keep your immune system healthy and enjoy life. (BTW, we raised free-range, organic chickens for years and loved the dark orange yolks even though we never thought they tasted any different than store bought eggs. The fresh chickens, however were a definite improvement.)

I get my eggs from a lady who raises them humanely, in the old fashioned way. If I shop for them at market, I question the vendors, but I haven't seen any elsewhere I would consider buying. I almost bought some the other day at market, but the vendor said her chickens have free reign of the barn but they never go outside. She said she keeps 170 of them in there, so I declined. I picked up two dozen eggs from my usual lady yesterday. I can't stand thinking about the inhumane way factory farmed chickens are treated. I found my egg lady a year and a half ago, on Kijiji

Of course I'm still eating eggs. There's no problem with them as long as they're thoroughly cooked, in any case. And I NEVER eat undercooked or raw eggs, nor let anyone do so in my presence--THAT is dangerous.

Those eggs were farm raised. Those egg farms also had on-site USDA inspectors - what they heck were they doing if conditions were so bad. Those boobs need to be FIRED!

On the news they said the egg farms had flies and maggots - OH for crying out LOUD~ What farm doesn't! I don't care how clean your conditions are and whether you are organic or free range- you will have flies, maggots, manure and other nastiness!

The dude that owns those egg farms in question gives all farmers a bad rep - Jack DeCoster - remember his name if you haven't heard it before. Nothing good is ever associated with it.

We get our eggs at Publix and they come from Florida or Georgia. We had egg salad for lunch last week and didn't get sick. If you think those chickens are treated bad, don't ever go to a slaughterhouse and see what they do to cows. They are all treated badly. Guess the only other choice is to become a vegan.

I, too, get my eggs from a woman who lets her chickens roam free, 24/7. She buys only organic feed for them, too. :)

I always buy cage-free eggs, but realize that could mean just about anything. I also avoid jumbo eggs because I've read that laying these can be hard on the chickens.

That said, the older I get, the less I find eggs appealing; I don't know why. More often than not, I end up throwing out part of the dozen. I suppose I should buy half-dozens. What a change from the days when I always had three or four cartons in the fridge.

I had a serious case of salmonella years ago. Got it from undercooked beef liver.

Yes we eat almost a dozen a week, but buy them from a friend who raises Guineas. Wow... I just looked them up on Google. They don't look anything like a chicken!

The eggs are about the same size as a chicken egg and they are brown, I don't notice any difference in taste.

i already eat only cage-free, organic and usually egglands since theirs' have a stamp and can't be switched out w/ non-stamped eggs in the store by employees or shoppers. other than those i have a couple of sources of free (always pay them thou) home raised eggs, one from a co-worker who has a fridge just for all the eggs her cage-free organic fed chickens produce lol. i eat very little meat and eggs are a great protein for me ~ liz

I used to work in chicken barns. They were loose in the barn, and had metal nests that they'd lay the eggs in.

Alisande, the chickens can't be forced to lay the huge eggs.
It just happens. We'd find double-yolkers regularly in with the standard-size eggs.

What upset me weren't the living conditions of them, but the way they treat *each other.* They would pick on one that was physically inferior to the others. Also the roosters would fight with another rooster if they wandered into their territory.

Egglands eggs are the only eggs we buy, and we're still eating them. :-)

I don't usually eat eggs...although I cook with them, but when I need eggs, I have my own hens, so I don't buy eggs. I don't use very many eggs, so most of them I feed to the possums.

Sure. I just make sure they're well cooked.

Salmonella has probably been here with the first chicken and egg. I eat them anyway I want to. Yolks always runny, make home made ice cream with raw eggs and never had any problems. If there is a difference in store chickens and a fresh killed chicken it is probably because it is freshly killed. No telling how long it takes a store bought chicken to get from kill date to our table. Now that is scary.

Never stopped. My brand, Egglands, was never on the list anyway. I eat them anyway I want.

Although I don't eat anywhere near as many eggs as I used to, I haven't quit eating eggs because of the recall. Haven't really gone out for breakfast since the recall though I've wanted to. Many restaurants around here have been having issues getting eggs and in just the last couple of days they expanded the recall again.

I know the percentage of chickens with salmonella is high as it is so it only makes sense that eggs would have some too. But when cooked properly there's no issue.

Guess there's the age old question, which came first, salmonella in the chicken or in the egg?

We buy our eggs locally, from someone my husband works with, and never stopped eating them at all.

I buy only cage-free, free range now. The brand I have at present is Born Free.

i have my own chickens i know whats going on down there.

I buy them from a farm about a mile from here.

I am just not an egg fan. I buy them by the 1/2 doz. for baking only.

If they are in cakes or cookies or muffins.....otherwise I don't like eggs.
And I buy local eggs so it hasn't been a problem for DH, who loves eggs.

Love eggs, have one a day, 365 a year. I'd love to have my own chickens., but with the dogs I don't think it would be possible.
