She's not feeling well...but wasn't before I gave her the egg....that's why I fed it to her!
I wish I knew someone who would sell me farm eggs! I would easliy pay double the supermarket prices.

As part of my "Fill the Freezer" extravaganza I spent yesterday morning making Ann T's delicious scones, a few dozen cookies and batch of banana muffins. I tossed the carton and of course the garbage has since been picked up. I must admit we tried a few and we are still standing but now I'm worried about sharing my stash of treats which was my intent.

I'm assuming the high heat of baking would kill off any salmonella but I'm not sure.

Anybody with good info on this?

I fed my other kid one of these eggs today for breakfast - over easy - before I knew about the recall - he's still standing - will let you know if he develops symptoms!

jessy - is the code on the end of the egg carton one of the following:

P1026, P1413 or P1946. If not your child should be fine.

I heard on the news that it can take up to 3 days for symptoms to begin. Keeping fingers crossed that Fred stays not dead LOL!

I just read this morning that no contamination was actually found in the eggs!

"The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said it hadn't yet found clear evidence of contamination, although heavy rainfall near the Iowa company that produced the eggs may have raised the risk of salmonella infestation from rodents."

there is a farmer's market here once a week....from mid may until about the end of october.
I used to know "egg ladies" but not any more....and the regulations for selling eggs almost preclude the old "egg lady" sort of deal any more, you are better off just finding some one who will "give" you extra eggs....and in exchange you "help them with their feed bill".
and right now I don't know anyone like that....

Cooking to internal 160F will eliminate salmonella.

Light poaching, over easy, soft boiling, runny omelettes and softly scrambled won't necessarily do it, although they will reduce the amount of salmonella.

To completely eliminate salmonella, you have to cook until the yolk is "set" and there is no more runny liquid is required. Meaning, dry scrambled, fried until yolks are solid, hard boiling, etc.

If you're really worried and don't want to decipher carton codes, you can simply switch to pasturized egg product (or local eggs, of course) for a few weeks. Personally, I'll merely cook my eggs a tad longer for a temporary while.

What about the chickens that laid these eggs? Anyone know if they were destroyed? Are they being tested?

Actually, the FDA says 145F for 15 seconds is sufficient to kill salmonella.

Adrienne, the chickens, barns and eggs have all been tested with "no clear evidence" found to date. The life span of a commercial laying hen is pretty darned short, about a year, maybe, so they wouldn't hesitate to slaughter any which might test positive.

However, the most probable cause at this point seems to be rodent contamination. Then again, next week they might decide it's omething else entirely.

Boy, Iowa needs to quit getting rain. First the pumpkin shortage due to last year's floods, now they are attributing this problem to current flooding. No pumpkin and no eggs and Thanksgiving is coming!

Okay, Linda. I'm lucky in that I do know someone that brings me eggs. He's a stickler for organic, so he feeds his chickens organic feed. They're expensive eggs, $5 per dozen, but well worth it. I'm worried he's going to quit with the eggs, though, because his feed is expensive, and his chickens don't always produce enough eggs to pay for his feed. I keep asking him if he's gotten some more chickens for when his current flock gets too old, but he hasn't yet. Well, I'll enjoy them while I can.

I generally use powdered eggs, which are pasteurized, and keep several #10 cans on-hand. About the only time I use fresh shell eggs are when I get a coupon for a FREE dozen from the store.

For those concerned with egg prices going out-of-site, you may want to purchase a can or two of powdered whole eggs, especially if you will need them for all that holiday baking.

If folks are buying organic/natural/free range eggs because they taste better (which they do!) that's great. But I think there is a mistaken idea out there that such eggs are much safer than your plain old, store bought eggs.

Setting aside such debates as regard other matters, an organic, free ranging chicken is just as able to pick up salmonella as a caged one.

"Unfortunately, organic eggs can become infected with Salmonella just as easily, and perhaps more so, as eggs produced by conventional farming methods.

Chickens become contaminated in many ways, including pecking at insects that pick up bacteria from the environment, pecking at droppings that carry germs or drinking contaminated water. Free-range chickens may have better living arrangements than traditional factory chickens, but they have a wider range of environment in which to pick up bacteria. Really, eating eggs, especially when not thoroughly cooked is something of a crap shoot, and always has been. But we engage in more dangerous crap shoots every day.

A little perspective is always helpful. According to the CDC, just 5,000 deaths a year are attributable to food borne illness in the US. Salmonella is only one of three pathogens that share responsibility for 1500 of those deaths. I've included a link. Take a look at the case fatality rates, for one thing.

If one checks into the statistics regarding other causes of death, worry about eating eggs will likely dissipate. In fact, a little research on causes of death will show that food-borne illnesses aren't even usually listed.

Are organic foods better for us? Maybe. But to what extent, for what reason, and if so, what is the cost to benefit ratio?

As I said, organic, free range eggs do taste better, in my opinion. But if you eat them raw or even sunny side up (I do!) you lays your bets and takes your chances.

and now the whole thing is impacting Iowa's gubernatorial race. One candidate was governor before when De Coster came from Maine to open a plant in Iowa, and some say the then governor should have seen him coming, and others say the present governor should have shut him down when the first complaints began coming in.
And in reality a few ...or more than a few barn cats may have tipped the balance!

I'm well aware that any egg can be contaminated, but I don't eat the eggs I get from the farmer because I think they are safer. I eat them because his hens are treated humanely, allowed to roam and peck, and soak up the sunshine, and be chickens. I just won't buy eggs any other way. I wash the eggs thoroughly with warm water and diswashing liquid before using them.

I heard on NPR that the company, or one of the companies, I think the one LindaC mentiond, has been cited and fined several times for various reasons, including cruelty to animals. As long as people continue to buy cheap, factory produced eggs, (no pun intended), the cruelty will continue. (Sorry for the OT soapbox)

FDA says feed was contaminated but is not ruling out the possibility of multiple contamination sources.

"FDA Deputy Commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein said the investigators are not just looking at the feed, but at the "overall contamination of the facility." Contamination found in the feed could be a part of a larger problem, he said."

Wonder why the FDA spokesperson would have made that remark if they didn't at least suspect additional sources of contamination? The comment is certainly not good for business at DeCoster's operations. Still, I'm having a hard time feeling any sympathy considering his rap sheet of prior violations both in Maine & Iowa.

I heard the eggs that DeCoster now can't sell as shell eggs are being sold to facilities that use eggs in making other products like baked goods, pasturized eggs, etc. I guess that's safe but the thought gives me the willies.
