My hero dogs

It's 96 here this afternoon ,and I and my dogs were inside. I was on the computer and the dogs were resting beside me. We heard the honking of a horn as we often hear. I live on a corner of a quiet street and a busy road. The anti theft feature on todays cars are always going off, and we ignore them unless it's really late at night. My dogs always don't react either. After a minute or two, I was thinking.. all right, already, turn it off or get your kid out of the car. Dogs all of a sudden went nuts and started barking and wanted outside. So I followed them around to my side street where they went to the gate and were furiously pawing at the gate. I looked over and across the street my new neighbor was sitting behind the wheel furiously motioning me. I went over and she hollered because all the windows were up that she was locked in the car and could not get out. She told me to go in her house and get the keys which I immediately did and got her out. She was so hot and sweat drenched and so happy I was home. Ours is a quiet street with not so many cars going by. The busy street cars go so fast they would never notice her. I credit my dogs as being the real heroes here. I reacted quickly when they did. Extra treats for them tonight.

You have one neighbor who will always be especially fond of your dogs.

How can a person be locked into a car. Maybe it is just because our car (van) that we consider new, is a 1995. Is this some kind of new feature that makes it possible to be locked IN?

Trudi, it IS kitty camo. I used to have a black female (she was a hunter too) and she was much easier to see in dim light than Dora, who I step on frequently because she's just invisible. She melds into any background. Army Rangers would love to have her as a sniper. The best hunter I ever had was a male orange tabby we named Morris when we lived in San Pedro. He had no home and lived across the street in a small park full of birds. I watched Morris catch a sparrow in mid-flight one time, then catch another right after that. I turned to my wife and said, come here, see this, and before she got to the window, he caught another one. We also had a mouse problem, which he worked on. One day he just went still as an Egyptian statue in front of the sink, apparently hearing it. Many hours later, ometime around 3 am in the morning while we were sleeping, all the lights out, we awakened to the sound of battle in the kitchen. He had caught it! I was getting desperate about these gophers. Still am -- there must be more. I have thought before about other predator solutions. I went looking for gopher snakes online, thinking maybe I would buy one and just let it loose in the burrow, although the length of some of them are a bit alarming. I wouldn't want the neighbors freaking out over a 5 foot snake poking its head out of a hole in the lawn and giving them the evil eye. There's a dwarf gopher snake from California, though that might be worth a try, about 3 and a half feet long. Carolyn, Dora brings me cockroaches as gifts, huge black 2 inch Oriental cockroaches we get around the foundation. She makes that weird mama cat sound which I guess means, "Dinner's ready, kids!" and then I find her on my bed with it, swatting it around.

"Firefighters were alerted at 8:20 a.m. to respond to the home of Lester and Bonnie Stinnard, off of Route 670. Due to the hour, with many firefighters at their jobs, additional companies were called to supply manpower." Ummm... maybe it's just me, but I would think that if firefighters are "at their jobs," they would be available to respond to a call for help. Perhaps this should have said, "Due to the hour, with many of the volunteer firefighters at their regular jobs, additional companies were called to supply manpower."

SG, Thank you so much for your insight--I believe you are a true "dog whisperer"! Let me clarify a few things and ask specific training & environmental questions: First I'll say, due to you and Annz' kind help, I believe I have corrected one of my problems. When I designed our new home I made space under the wall cabinets in the laundry rm for the dogs' kennels--next to each other. I thgt I was so smart doing this, but for my dogs' personalities, this may be one big problem. So hours ago, I moved Tiger's kennel to a different room (pantry next to L. rm) and he went right in! So now they will have their own space--away from each other. ~~I am also not going to allow either to sit under my desk while I am working--maybe that made Pepper (the Wheaton) think Tiger was getting special treatment (?). #2: The dogs do know I am TOP DOG for I, also, use their food & bowls to show my dominance--pretend to eat a kernel from their bowls before putting bowl down--pick up while they are eating & touch them/their food while they are eating. Never a problem--never a growl or resistance. Also, when we pass thru a door outside I am to go first, after I have them sit-stay & wait for me. I have them sit/lay/stay on command from time to time during the day to reinforce this too. ~~A trainer I consulted after the first attack told me that they both knew I was top dog but I did things to allow Pepper to think she was my equal--that we were BOTH top dogs. So I've been doing these things for a long time---more strictly for about a yr--but now you'll see NOT STRICTLY ENOUGH. ***Let me be specific in my info and question: When I open a door to let them out, Pepper does bolt out the door ahead of me about 1/3 of the time. I use my correction sound (Ehhhhh) and she immediately returns to my side to sit/stay until I give her the "OK" to move. (Sometimes just hearing the correction sound from me, she stops & returns to my side.) Specifically, WHEN I say sit/stay--she ALWAYS obeys. If I give NO command, she will start thru the door. ~~~Writing this out, I see I'm slacking and creating top dog DOUBT in her mind. So she isn't totally convinced that I am top dog? Or am I teaching her that I AM top dog but if she "assumes a top dog behavior" there is no real consequence besides "re-doing the situation" and moving on? SO, I need to go back to square one and take better control--using a lead to control, give commands EVERY TIME AND be persistent. But is it as "simple" as that? I can & will do these things correctly now but what else am I doing or what else can I do. Surely my "allowing" her to even consider disobeying my top-dog status isn't the only reason she's "comfortable" risking punishment in order to attack Tiger? I believe Tiger knows Pepper is Alpha dog and is comfortable with it. It has to be ME & my behavior that affects Peppers attacks. Hope I've been somewhat clear about what I do & don't do in order for you all to help give me instruction & advice. tks again in advance, CB

I have no idea how someone can be locked inside a car, but this wasn't her car. It's a new Honda ,and she borrowed it from her son because her car was being serviced. So she was clueless on if there was a button to push to unlock it or what. She was ready to kick the window out but was wearing flip flops and is a small woman so that probably wouldn't have happened. We figured it was at least 110 in the car as it was almost 100 outside. I'm sure glad I was home.

Amazing. Dogs have a great sense of hearing.

I have a new car, two weeks, today.

I wasn't used to the automatic locks on the door.
I learned when trying to get out with the motor still running, I could not open the door.

Then I had to press the unlock button.

You must be so proud of your pupperoni's! Just stop and think about it... your neighbor could well be dead right now! Sheesh!

There must have been some way to unlock the car from inside. If not, Honda is going to see a huge recall I believe. I have a Honda, not new, but can't figure out how she got locked in. Perhaps she just panicked.

Glenda - Can you put your car in park and -then- open the doors without shutting it off?

It was probably one of those child safe locks. I've been in vehicles where all the doors were locked until the driver released them. I can see how, in an unfamiliar car (and panicking at that) she might not have been able to figure out how to do that, especially if she was unfamiliar with the feature.

I thought that child-safety feature only controled the back seat doors. I think our is that way, but we have it turned off so I could be wrong.

Did you dogs get their treats for being so good?
I'm so glad you paid attention to them instead of just making them stop barking. You are a hero too!

Give your dogs high fives from me. A friend and I got locked in her Acura a few years ago. Fortunately, it wasn't hot out. She had to call somebody (the dealer, maybe?) to rescue us.

I remember one time my car died...I let it cost to off road and set there...I panicked...then remembered I had manual lock also....I thought all cars had them as a saftey measure.

You should have your neighbor check her car to see if she does...just in case it happens again.

What if........she did have them, but didn't know it....and didn't have any neighbors home to help her.

Yes, the dogs are neighborhood heroes now and got extra treats. Sometimes they, especially the Boston/Sheltie mix, get on my nerves because they are so territorial. They are both sweethearts but bark every time someone walks down our sidewalks. >>Ironically, I had never formally met this neighbor before today. She's a middle aged divorced woman who works at a near by hospital so is gone during the day. She's only been here a few months and we've just waved before. I shutter to think what might have happened since our temps today reached 99, our weatherman said, and her car was in the sun. Scary.

In my opinion, yes, the doggies should get an extra treat....but so should you for being so alert and quick to action. Treat your self to something wickedly good. Good for you, your all hero's. Kudos!!!!
