Genealogy in ND anyone?

I am going thru an old suitcase of pics, ect. of DH's aunt who lived in Park River, ND. There are a ton of clippings for weddings from newspapers from Adams, Grafton, Fargo, and Park River, so far. Most are not related to DH's family, but are of friends of aunt's in the area. If you are looking for someone in that area, let me know ASAP! I have a week to go thru this before we leave for a week, maybe more.

Even thought I am a CA transplant to ND, I do have friends who live in that area. If you could email me some names I can ask around. Also I can check some of the Senior centers or even the phone books

Marie, I will try tomorrow. I have finally finished the suitcase full! One scrapbook was nothing but news paper clippings. There are a couple of clippings of family members who were honorably discharged from the military (WWII). I didn't even try to go thru the whole pages of papers in it.

Casi, I used Family Tree Maker from Broderbund. It suited my purpose at the time. Not sure that you can simply copy over all your data with a few mouse clicks sadly. However the upside of using the Familysearch program is that they are not going to disappear any time soon so there is little fear of becoming outdated. I never used it but did download a few times - in case I plucked up the courage to start the transfer of all the data. Moving the names and stuff did not seem daunting but adding all the notes as well made it a serious proposition. Much of my data was stored on XL where I could add any variables I needed. My family is from the UK so I sorted the names as I found them in the 1850,1860,1870, 1880 and 1890 census. Plus there were columns for church records and birth, marriage and death columns. I enjoyed it for over 3 years but got side tracked easily trying to understand the way of life back then, plus through family contacts my photo album of the departed grew steadily and I spent a lot of time repairing damaged photos.

Count me in as another Family Tree Maker user. I love this software! I have a World Deluxe account (the highest access available) with Ancestry.com (and have had a full account with them for more years than I care to remember). I also have a Gold account (the highest access available) with Genealogy.com (and I had the account with Genealogy.com prior to my account with Ancestry.com!). The two sites are both part of The Generations Network, but they each have some records that the other doesn't, and some records are searched more easily on one site than the other, so I keep both accounts. When you have an annual account with either site, you get a free copy of the Family Tree Maker software. I get the new version every year. I have several USB jump drives onto which I copy EVERYTHING. I also have a full backup copy on my laptop. That way, if my desktop pc fails, I can resort to my laptop. If both desktop and laptop fail, I can turn to a jump drive. If it fails, I can go through at least six more jump drives before I'd have to consider the data to be lost. But... one cool thing about my Ancestry.com membership is that I was able to export my Family Tree Maker data to a gedcom file, then upload it to Ancestry.com. I was then able to take all of the supporting electronic documentation (e.g., Census records, Draft Registration Cards, immigration and naturalization records, Social Security Death Index, marriage/birth/death records from various states, etc.) and "save them to" folks in my online tree. I can also add notes to the info for the folks. I also have my own web site with our genealogy information, photos, etc. Bottom line is that there would have to be one heck of an information technology failure for me to lose everything!

you may want to contact your local Mormon Church (Church of the Latter Day Saints)

They maintain the largest geneology data base in the USA.

They might be interested in copying some of your information. I have dealt with them in the past and I can assure you they will treat your materials with the greatest care and you will get back everything the borrow to copy.

Also, if anyone is trying to trace their ancestry the Mormon Church data base is one of the best places to begin your search.

They won't give you a bunch of religious conversion nonesense either,they will just assist you in your search.

btw, if you know who perfomed funeral services for your family...they keep remarkable records..the director for mother's cremation asked all sorts of family questions...

Susan, thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind for future reference. I am mostly posting this for anyone looking for someone in that area, as I have a lot of clippings and pictures from DH's aunt who lived there.

Tami - My mother was from Park River, ND. Her family name was Kelner. She had 8 siblings, only 2 still living. My 86-year-old aunt would be very interested! She still has friends there.

DH's aunt was Frances Geary, Mrs. John Richard Geary. She was very close freinds with Adele Hankey. We still keep in contact with Adele once in a while. Frances was born Frances Gertrude C. 21 Aug. 1916. Married John Richard Geary 22 Sept. 1945. Died 29 November 2001. There are many pictures we assume were of friends and their families and LOTS of newspaper clippings, some whole pages, maybe whole papers. Frances was probably born in either Walnut, KS or St. Paul, MN. I don't currently have that info. Some of the names I listed above are in the pictures I have, but to our knowlege. per her sister, they are not related to us.
