Gift or no gift - ideas or suggestions?

My son and DIL live half way around the world in the Philippines. Today is her B-day. We don't send mail or packages due to time & unreliability of mail service. In the past I've just sent Happy B-day emails and Amazon online gift certificates.

Also, they both travel a great deal and they are into simplicity (no nicknacks or jewelry and only limited clothing styles for travel ease, etc. Several of their wedding gifts are still in my storage room). On their first anniversary they were in Spain. I emailed the hotel & asked them to put a card in their room saying happy 1st anniversary. That got lost in translation so they got a happy tenth anniversary card. At least they got a chuckle.

Today she happens to be in California on business, but I'm not sure exactly where. Again I'll send her a birthday email, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Online gift suggestions? (Ironically she works for an online Filipino gift service). She's a sweetheart of a DIL so an email & online gift card just seem impersonal. Wish there was a way to show how much we like and appreciate her.

Does she have any special charity? school? that you could make a donation to.

That's a wonderful suggestion. I'll have to ask my son if there is a specific one near to her heart. She went to school in California, Philippines, India & Boston & also worked in Seattle & Beijing so I'll have to ask him what he thinks. I'm sure there's something.

We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

Ok. I guess I'm outvoted :) I think of the "service industry" as like people like merry maids or something. Like my cleaning lady in our FL house, she comes and cleans and leaves, cleaning houses is her only job, and we don't really chat. This is a much friendlier relationship. No one I know who has household help in our area gives them an annual cash bonus. Everyone does gifts, which are sometimes cash and sometimes other things. When we've done cash gifts in the past, the gifts have been equal to around a week's salary though... So I guess you could call it a bonus... Edited to add- I like what kswl did with the carpet cleaning, giving something that was something useful, but also more personal than just handing off an envelope of cash. I received some very thoughtful gifts when my mother died recently -a flowering bush to plant in her memory, a donation to a food bank, etc. But honestly, the one that touched me the most was a letter from my old high-school boyfriend, whom I haven't spoken to in more than thirty years. He took the time to write about some very specific memories he had of my mom while spending time at our house all those years ago, and I was deeply touched. You may be able to put together a SNAPFISH (or other) small book with pictures and text of some of your favorite memories. To me, that would be a very special gift.

Yah, I have given wallets that i filled with gift cards too-- not sure what i would use for a housewarming gift. I did find some inexpensive new home journals/maintenance record books.. most of the info I'd expect them to keep online/on the cloud.. but really, I am only looking for a vehicle for gift cars so it could work for the purpose. Same with a photo album-- they're all fully online/cloud. Will keep looking for popup cards and for books/photo albums. (along with baby gifts-- we'll soon have a virtual baby shower for nephew and his wife!) Thanks all!

I understand that the online gift card can seem impersonal, but in your DIL's case, it sounds like a good fit. If they're still there next year and you have some lead time, maybe you could contact a restaurant in their area and get a gift certificate.
