I share your concern! Can't believe the dad doesn't realize how fast a car could come zooming down the street, and he'd have no time to get the children out of harm's way.

I live on a County Road and there is a sharp corner 200 feet from my house. We like to take a evening walk, but darn, it's dangerous.

We have a neighbor with a scooter that lets his 10 and 12 year old drive it up and down the road. I worry about it.

And he'll be oh-so-surprised/shocked when the kids get out in the street by themselves -- wondering all the while just how they did it & "they've been told to only go out there when I'm there". Dimwit!

That dad is breaking the law and endangering those kids. Any motorized vehicle has to be licensed/registered and pass all requirements to be street legal. And anyone driving a motorized vehicle has to have a valid driver's license. Even when the motorized vehicle is just a kid-sized thing, it can only legally be "driven" on private property - not on a public street or sidewalk.

I know what I would do if I were in your situation -- I'd call the police and let them come out and cite the father and make him understand just how wrong he's being.

I've got a similar situation in my neighborhood. Family across the street has a 'parttime' son (his son, kid's mother has fulltime custody, but he visits a couple of days a week.) Kid is only about 15, and has a little motor bike/scooter that he's been riding to school in the mornings. He goes to school in another town, and has to take very heavily travelled roads to get there. Driving age is 17 in our state--so he definitely shouldn't be doing this.

I think that I'd go out to speak to the man about the danger in an attempt to get him to stop without official action.

Probably ask him how long he thought it might be till his kid got seriously injured, or, quite likely, killed ... a week ... or a month?

And tell him of the legal situation and how he was having his children violate the law ... but that it was he that was the violator.

And if he refused to listen to reason, tell him that I felt it my duty to notify the police, so not to be surprsed if they showed up.

I guess that I prefer to attempt to have things work well in the community by taking action on an individual and community basis before getting oficialdom involved, when possible.

Hope his kids haven't had trouble ... yet.

Well, OJ, I had that little talk with my next-door neighbor last spring. It didn't do any good at all.

We don't have sidewalks here, and our mailboxes are across the street. The six-year-old girl frequently rides her electric car to the mailbox to get the mail and the paper. She is nowhere near as tall as the mailbox so can't be seen by a motorist from either direction. But, she also walks or rides her bicycle to the mailbox, and that isn't safe, either. Her mom said, "Oh, she's very careful." I said, "I know she is. It's the drivers who can't see her that are the problem." The kid still gets the mail, every day.
