I was just at Shop Rite and the shelves were full of Libby's canned pumpkin.

The news this weekend in the Philly area reported that the Hurricane ruined the pumpkin crop for many farmers. It was going to be a smaller crop anyway for many farmers due to the rainy spring which delayed planting. They also said that they'll supplement with pumpkins from other areas of the country but that would also increase the price.

I picked up my usual 4 cans that I buy every fall for holiday cooking.

I never use pumpkin ever.
I use carrots cooked and mash fine.

I use real pumpkins but I wait till the day after halloween, then go to the farmers market and get all I want for $.50 each.....LOL

Thanks for the heads-up.....I'll have to stockpile a few cans. Last year I hoarded a single can and never did use it; just liked to have it, I guess!

I read in paper not sure if its just our area a shortage of pumpkins...I bought 3 my daughter and I painted them to look like candy corn cute..

I never had trouble getting it the last time they said this. Marketing ploy? :)

Still gonna bake my usual two loaves of pumpkin bread, that I yearly make for my advisor. Been doing it for almost 25 years.

Today's news mentioned that there is going to be a shortage of pumpkins in our area , but I'm not sure if that will be nationwide. It won't matter much to us as we prefer sweet potatoes or butternut squash to pumpkin. I just checked and I have four packages of pumpkin in the freezer so we're in great shape.

I did a quick online check and it appears the big worry is pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns. A good portion of the pumpkins grown for baking has already been harvested but they're worried about a shortage of Halloween pumpkins.

Pumpkin bars are a fall time favorite around here. I make them a few times during the season. I had bought up some extra cans when I could find them last autumn, so I'm ok and haven't even looked in the stores yet.

If you stockpile it, be sure to use it in a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise, you'll get this-

I use canned pumpkin in a sausage/pumpkin soup. This can obviously got lost in the pantry for a couple of years. I really wish they would put "use-by" dates on canned goods.

they usually do but you have to search for it..when in doubt you can take the numbers on the can and call customer services...

There was a story in the Long Island newspaper Newsday just yesterday that said our pumpkin crop this year is pitiful. Hurricane Irene and a generally wet summer are to blame. Remember, Long Island used to be known for its' potato farms? When our kids were little, there used to be so many "Pick Your Own" pumpkin farms. Now they're all closed.

My husband was shopping yesterday and saw a woman taking all the cans of pumpkin off the shelf. Well, he dove right in and grab 4 cans for me. That should do me for the holidays. Later that day we went to 3 other stores and the cans were all gone. Boy that lady is quick. Hope she gets help for being a hoarder.

Yes, they do put use by dates on canned goods. I don't exactly stockpile canned pumpkin. Around here (at least) the stores don't carry it year round. And I like to start making pumpkin bars earlier in the fall than I can find canned pumpkin in the stores. So, I buy up some cans for the next fall. Not cases, but enough to make several pans of bars.

Golly, I sure hope not. I had two cans on the shelf, but used one to make a batch of pumpkin bread....which is baking as I type and smells divine!!! I;ll grab a few cans next time I shop....if there is any.

I hope there isn't a shortage. JoAnn/FL posted two pumpkin recipes some time back--one for pumpkin coffee cake and one for cookies with cream cheese icing and I have them marked to make this fall.

I am trying to remember to date my canned goods for that very reason. I better go buy me a can or two of pumpkin. When I get my once a year craving for pumpkin bars, I want pumpkin bars! :)

I just went and looked and most of the cans in my pantry do have dates stamped on them! When did they start doing that, because I know the pumpkin can didn't have a date. When I cleaned out MIL's house 5 years ago, none of the cans had dates and because she was a hoarder, I had to throw them all away. I had no idea if they were still safe to use or would be any good and I wasn't going to risk our health or anyone else's by donating them to a food pantry, either.

I wasn't TOO surprised when I opened this can of pumpkin because it was moving in a big chunk, inside the can, when I shook it. Clunk, clunk..... And it was a little swollen, so I knew it was bad. I just didn't think it would be THAT bad! :)

Found canned pumpkin in a local grocery store yesterday. Really wanted some, but didn't but it. Upon reading the lable on the can, I found out that it was processed in CHINA! It was the store's own brand. I am going to be watching everything else with that store's lable. Totally freaked me out!

Now that is sad! Pumpkin from CHINA??? Thanks for the alert; will make me check things a bit more closely!

Today was one of the annual pumpkin auctions here, they sold over 15,000 pumpkins there today. They had tens of thousands of them.

Krogers add just came out. Fresh pumpkins 3/$10. I'm guessing I can get 3 cans out of one medium pumpkin easily and freze it! :0)

Not liking the idea there is pumpkin from "China" out there. Yikes!

In the store flyer this week it was $2.99 or $3.99 or some such ungodly price for a 28 oz. can.

Went to walmart and pathmart no pumpkin.Shoprite has it at $3.98 a can.

I went to Walmart, they had Libbys canned pumpkin for $1.68 for a 2 cup can OR a fresh pumpkin, any size for $3.68. I purchased this 17.5lb pumpkin.....then cooked/pureed & froze it. No pumpkin shortage here....

I bought two big butternut squash yesterday at the barn sale for a dollar each. I have them stored in the garage until I can get around to cooking them.

Since I grew Kabocha squash, aka Japanese pumpkin, a couple of years ago, it is all I use.
More work than opening a can but the taste is worth it.
