Do you normally stock different kinds of oil?

I regularly cook with olive and vegetable oil. I saw Canola oil on sale and bought a jug of that. My jug of vegetable oil is gone, so now I'm using Canola.

Today I saw a 3 litre jug of Sunflower oil for $2.97 ($5 off) so I bought it. I know it has a higher heat temperature and the health benefits are good.

I keep several cooking oils on hand:
Canola
Safflower
Grape seed
Peanut
Olive Oil
Extra virgin Olive oil
Sesame

and Crisco in the refrigerator.

Each has it's own use.

I always have 2 kinds of oil handy for cooking and I keep them in containers with the spout so they're always ready for pouring into a pan.

One holds EVOO and the other whatever - corn, canola, etc.

I did end up using an empty cardboard OJ container to dispose of it and my conscience is reasonably clear LOL! I figure even the waxy plastic cardboard will SOMEDAY break down and the oil is veg based (canola) so that shouldn't hurt anything either. I can't imagine pouring it on a rose bush though.... I would think that would really throw the natural organisms off balance in the soil, not to mention changing the ability of the soil to drain/retain moisture. However, if someone had told me 10 years ago to feed my plants alfalfa, I would have thought they were nuts too, so maybe this is a live and learn thing. Anyway, thanks for all the creative solutions. I will certainly put them to use next Fathers Day when we ahve the next big catfish fry! LOL! Alexa

Dead corner is missing!! Is this normal? Do you have dead space?

If you have plenty of storage elsewhere and/or a fairly large kitchen, deadening out a corner may be OK. However, as Madeline616 specifically stated, this is a small kitchen. Small kitchens typically are short on storage, so even an "inefficient" storage area is better than no storage! Personally, I find that corner susans are more useful than the blind corner cabinets (and you don't need a small child to retrieve fallen items!) for base cabinets and easy-reach cabs to be more useful for upper cabinets...both with a 90-degree corner (i.e., no diagonal), but to each his own. (For uppers, height may be a deciding factor...I'm 5'10" and can reach into the corner easy-reach cabs fairly well.) In my experience a corner cab of some sort is standard (susan, blind, easy-reach) - if you want to eliminate that corner storage, you have to tell the KD or cabinetmaker you want it eliminated. Did the cabinetmaker include extra stile width on the sides of the cabinets to accommodate the filler that's needed in cabinets installed in a corner with a dead corner? You need either that or significant filler to allow the doors/drawers to open and clear the drawer pulls/knobs on the other side of the corner. The corner cabs mentioned above provide "natural" filler... Personally, I'd get the cabinetmaker to make a corner cabinet of some sort!

Frozen sliced red peppers, jarred roasted red peppers, these are not thing I normally buy but do now. We do 1 big shop every 17 days or so, in between I can get local fresh veg at a farm, but that is limited to what is grown in greenhouse and storage crops. Speaking of storage crops, thank goodness for cabbage! Last night a head of red was the center of our meal: Braised red cabbage, with focaccia and a pork tenderloin. The night before it was Napa, stir fried with frozen edamame, and garlic tofu. Kim chi broth quinoa bowls also made the meal plan.

I'm very happy that I have a neighbor that taps his maples and makes syrup, he gives me the good dark stuff for baking. If he doesn't have any extra, or sells out, I have to go to other local "sugar bush" operations. Fat/grease/oil? Oh mercy. I have a vintage metal grease container, has that black Bakelite lid that says "grease", and it has bacon grease in it pretty much all of the time. I use that mostly for baking cornbread, it goes in the pan and into the oven to heat. I have olive oil, avocado oil, toasted sesame oil, chili oil, Criso that I use in ONE cookie recipe but that one has to have it, duck fat and chicken fat in the freezer which I skimmed when cooling broth, peanut oil for frying, lard that I render myself when we get pigs for the freezer and some suet that I keep for the birds. Oh, and butter, of course! I use more butter than any other kind of fat, it's in bread, biscuits and on my morning toaste. Olive oil is second because I use that when I roast vegetables, which is frequently and the butter dish and the olive oil spray dispenser are both sitting on the counter next to the cooktop. Annie

I try to keep everything fresh. I don't use enough oil to keep a lot on hand. Right now I have a little canola oil and an unopened bottle of corn oil. I used to make my own flavored oils...kept them in pretty bottles in a row to display in the kitchen. But....they didn't taste so great after sitting out in the light...the sun! :0)

But I love those Italian oil bottles. I own one and think I'd like to collect them! :0)

I usually only have 2 kinds, olive oil and what ever else seemed to be on sale at the time.

I just looked. Knew I had a few different kinds, but wow!

Canola oil
Peanut oil
Almond oil
Sesame oil (2)
Chili oil (2)
Garlic olive oil
Orange olive oil
Extra virgin olive oil
Regular olive oil

Guess I won't be buying oil anytime soon! Harry's daughter lives in the Napa Valley and sent a gift box with the orange and garlic flavored oils.

Generally, I have several.

The cheapest, store brand vegetable oil--for making my mom's chocolate cake. It just doesn't taste right if you use anything else in it.

EVOO for some cooking, dipping bread, etc. I try to use it as much as possible, for the health benefits (it actually cleans your arteries, rather than leaving deposits behind), but of course, the flavor doesn't go with everything.

Safflower is my all-purpose, go-to oil. It's an extremely healthy oil, with a high smoking point, and is very light in texture. It's got the best flavor, IMO, of any oil. It's also a great skin and hair moisturizer--only a few drops, worked into the ends of the hair will make a huge difference.

I also generally have sesame oil on hand. That's not a cooking oil, though.

Nicole, I'm glad you stopped making flavored oils--unfortunately, it's very dangerous to do at home, since food (especially garlic) stored in oil is a breeding ground for bottulism. Homemade flavored oils should be refrigerated and consumed within 2-3 days, then the excess should be tossed. Hoping that by posting this, maybe it will keep someone else from giving their family food poisoning.

As to storage? I keep olive and vegetable oil in the fridge. Yes, it gets a bit firm, but a minute or two under warm water, or 5 at room temperature is usually enough to loosen it enough to pour out what you need. The safflower, I just toss into the freezer. It doens't get hard, even at that temp. The colder the storage temperature, the longer life your oil has, so I always keep them as cold as possible

Just Canola Oil and Olive Oil. Use to have Shortning, but not anymore.

I only use canola oil. I do not care for the taste of olive oil.

I use butter, canola oil, olive oil, EVOO just for salads, and margarine. Some are interchangeable, but I like different tastes for different things. Butter on bread, but margarine for frying eggs, ,etc.

I keep olive oil, canola oil and coconut oil in my cupboard - I like to use certain oils for certain dishes. I really love baking with coconut oil - YUM!

I always have olive oil and canola oil around and of course, the dark sesame oil for Japanese cooking.
Once in a while I will buy walnut oil to use in bread making and for use in salad dressing.
I have some lard in the freezer now.....for pie crusts.
(And fried potatoes but only on rare occasions.)

Not as many as I used to. Don't keep olive oil anymore. I don't use much oil anymore. I use butter or bacon fat for most things that I cook it seems. Used to keep EV olive, peanut and vegetable or corn oil depending on price. I just picked up a bottle of canola oil. Used to use a lot of shortening but not anymore. Guess my cooking styles have changed. Although I went nearly a year with next to no cooking so that had an impact too.

Yes, I do stock several kinds of oil. I have 5W20 for very cold weather and 10W20 for warmer weather, and then a general purpose oil for the squirt can. There is always a penetrating oil on hand and a protectant type, but I never consider cooking with these.

Motor oil for the car.

Oh, yes - and some bacon fat that they stored in a cherry pie filling can when making supper at the church - does that count?
