Canned Pumpkin

My sister-in-law lives in Texas and she recently sent me some pumpkin. I told her that everyone was having trouble finding it.She sent me this site http://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Market-Foods-Organic-15-Ounce/dp/B000HDI5O8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1284148406&sr=1-1. She says you can order it there. I also found some last night at World Market. Hope this helps.

I'm going to the commissary and the downtown grocery store today. I'll check out the Grand Forks pumpkin situation.

I do have four cans in the pantry. We love pumpkin and I sometimes add a tiny little bit on the dogs' food.

If there's no canned pumpkin, I sometimes can find the smaller fresh pumpkins, or I substitute sweet potatoes/yams.

Thanks for the tips Sandie! Do you buy food stuff at World Market? I just have always hestitated cause it looks old! Guess I should try it!! :)

Gary, My thought is that you surely shouldn't try canning pumpkin unless you have a bona fide pressure canner. Most recent literature discourages people even from canning it that way, as it is hard to get the heat to permeate such a dense product and safely preserve it. I canned some pumpkin, about five years ago, using a pressure canner. But I have not tried it. It's probably good. But the cost of a mistake, well... not sure I want to risk trying it. I mainly freeze my squash. I bake them, scoop the flesh and measure 2 to 3 cup servings into ziplock bags, squeezing the air from the bag as I seal them. Then I lay these bags on a flat surface in my freezer. Once frozen, they stack very well. I've used them after four years storage, and they were as good as new. If I were to can pumpkin, I would surely use a pressure canner and I would set the pressure at about 15 lb and maintain that for something like an hour. I would want to take NO CHANCES with botulism. "Can the field pumpkins/jackolantern pumpkins be cooked and pureed, too?" I've only tried it once. So probably someone else can better answer this question. I cut the pumpkin into manageable sized pieces and baked it until tender. Then removed the skin and pureed the pulp. It was very disappointing. Seemed kind of 'watery' (for lack of a better descriptive word). And flavorless. So I've not tried it again. Maybe there is a better way to get a satisfactory product from a 'jack-o-lantern' pumpkin? And yes, pumpkin is a type of winter squash. Around here, 'Calabaza' is a Hispanic word for any and all types of squash, from pumpkin to zucchini. Rusty

No, not everyone should try to express anal glands. You can seriously hurt a dog or cat if you don't do it properly. Bad breath in dogs often is a tooth issue. But a vet should have already assessed that. I take it you have not followed up since adopting with your own vet? Please do this.......they often receive a different level of care on an individual basis than they get in shelters. Most shelter animals are vetted upon input, but not thereafter unless the staff or volunteers see the need, and you may not be able to depend on their input depending on whether they have hired vet technicians, or lay staff. The first thing I do when I adopt from a pound or shelter is to swing them by my vet for a complete check-up. They have found conditions totally missed by the shelter and shelter vetting is not a substitute for their home care. If you don't have a vet, it's time to find one instead of waiting for an emergency.

I went to Walmart, they had Libbys canned pumpkin for $1.68 for a 2 cup can OR a fresh pumpkin, any size for $3.68. I purchased this 17.5lb pumpkin.....then cooked/pureed & froze it. No pumpkin shortage here....

Last year I grew a lot of Kabocha squash aka Japanese pumpkin and use the puree instead of pumpkin. I think it is a lot tastier.
Not as convenient as canned pumpkin but worth the effort.
You can buy Kabocha squash at the market and roast your own to make the puree.

I don't get to the World Market that often as it is a few towns over.I have never noticed the food looking old, and I usually only buy things that I can't find at other stores. We went yesterday to take my cousin.She had never been there and she could have spent the whole day there.

This must be a regional shortage. I need pumpkin for something I have to make next week, and you all had me so scared, I went out yesterday to start tracking some down. It was no problem Found plenty at the first supermarket I tried.

Like Carol, I grew squash to substitute for pumpkin. I grew Boston Marrow squash, which I roasted, pureed, then froze.

I checked this morning at our Shop n Save, here in SW. Pa and they have none.....
The pumpkins growing in my backyard are looking better and better....

Looked today for canned pumpkin,,,nope! The shelf was empty, but the price was still on the shelf, $2.49!! Cooking up squash is looking better and better.

I found the 28 ounce cans today at a local market. The price was $3.19 per can which seemed high to me. I have a few cans already so I didn't buy any. I usually substitute sweet potatoes for pumpkin and we like that just as well.
