can pumpkin/coconut help anal gland?

Hoping to find out what you all believe to be true about this. My newly adopted sweetheart, Charlie (1+ yo rat terrier mix) has the smelliest anal area. His mouth doesn't smell so great either! Could that indicate that it's his whole digestive tract or is his bad breathe just from trying to clean the "south-end"? He does seem to have some food allergies - when I got him, the paperwork from the rescue showed the vet commented on his red, irritated skin. I put him on rice & chicken kibble with no corn/wheat. His skin seems better. He seems to have instant WORSE stink whenever he gets overly excited from say the arrival of a visitor to the house, etc. (workin' on that.). I have tried to "express" the glands since I've read that most anyone can... I can't. Internet searches indicate that pumpkin and coconut flakes & oil daily can take care of anal gland problems. Is this to be trusted? Thanks, any advice is appreciated!

I don't know about coconut, but pumpkin is good for dogs. It contains digestive enzymes and lots of nutrients. I give small amounts to my collie with his food from time to time. However it sounds like your little doggie should see a vet about the anal gland problem. Pumpkin is not likely to be a cure-all for what could be some sort of infection or impaction.

No, not everyone should try to express anal glands. You can seriously hurt a dog or cat if you don't do it properly. Bad breath in dogs often is a tooth issue. But a vet should have already assessed that. I take it you have not followed up since adopting with your own vet? Please do this.......they often receive a different level of care on an individual basis than they get in shelters. Most shelter animals are vetted upon input, but not thereafter unless the staff or volunteers see the need, and you may not be able to depend on their input depending on whether they have hired vet technicians, or lay staff.

The first thing I do when I adopt from a pound or shelter is to swing them by my vet for a complete check-up. They have found conditions totally missed by the shelter and shelter vetting is not a substitute for their home care. If you don't have a vet, it's time to find one instead of waiting for an emergency.

What food has taurine in it? I guess they must get it in the wild and since these cats much prefer little critters they catch, (little taurines?) I expect they get that naturally. Still, if you know a food that naturally has it, please tell me. With a heavy ground cover of snow and temps in the minus numbers, these cats are staying indoors most all the time these days.

Not all coconut oil products taste like coconut. LouAna brand (I get it at Wal-Mart and Dillons - a Kroger-associated store) doesn't have any coconut flavor. The Grain & Salt Society sold a brand (they called it Coconut BUTTER, and then had to change it to oil) that didn't taste like coconut (it was the first brand I ever tried). Carrington Farms Coconut Cooking Oil and NOW MCT Oil is also tasteless, so a good choice for salad dressing, which is one of the more difficult things to make with regular coconut oil because it solidifies so easily. But don't discount the flavor of coconut oil that does have a mild coconut flavor. It's my "secret" ingredient in brownies, without being over-powering, and works well with cocoa/chocolate. It's also a good choice in other baked goods and power/protein bars. I mix coconut oil with raw honey and use it as a spread like you would use honey-butter. Coconut oil by itself is used by vegans for a bread-spread instead of butter and margarine. Coconut oil aids in homemade breads keeping fresh a little longer than those made with butter or shortening. I found homemade bread made with coconut oil AND chia seeds stayed fresh for at least a week - soft enough to be used for a peanut butter sandwich after a week. Coconut oil has a long history in food and was commonly used in commercial baked goods pre-1960's because the commercial foods had a longer shelf-life when made with coconut oil. I often find recipes in older books calling for copra oil, which is coconut oil. If was often added to frosting in order to help it "set" in cool temperatures. Coconut oil was used for popping corn at stadiums because they could pop huge amounts ahead of time and the coconut oil kept it "fresh". Just stay clear of partially-hydrogenated or hydrogenated coconut oil. This process damages the oil and it doesn't have the same healthful effects on the body as unrefined coconut oil. -Grainlady

Couple of points to consider: Greyhounds have notoriously low thyroid hormones, and she will almost certainly test as "hypothyroid." However without having any clinical signs such as lethargy, unexplained weight gain (not the typical summer weight gain), hair loss on the body (not in the typical greyhound area of back of thighs) the likelihood that she is actually hypothyroid is very low, and she would not need treatment. Greyhounds and other sighthounds have some strange normal values (low thyroid levels, high PCV/HCT which is sometimes mistaken for cancer or dehydration) and anyone who is not familiar with them will drive themselves and the owner nuts trying to figure it out. Second, hypercalcemia does not ALWAYS occur with carcinomas, only about 50% of the time. Sure, when there is hypercalcemia we go searching for carcinomas unless there is another obvious reason, but just because there is no hypercalcemia doesn't mean there is no carcinoma. There are 2 types of tumors that could affect the anal sacs or area around the anal sacs: the more common in female dogs is apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (malignant), the more common in intact male dogs is anal sac adenoma (benign), although either could occur in either gender. In a retrospective study on dogs with apocrine gland ACA, over 50% of the dogs had NO clinical signs, and the mass was found on routine physical exam. A thickened anal gland is not normal- could be either inflammation, infection, or tumor. I don't think that you can rule out inflammation or infection with a weeks worth of oral antibiotics. The anal sac needs to be drained (with sedation or anesthesia because it can be quite painful) and possibly infused with antibiotics as previously mentioned to truly rule out infection. However if it were my 9 year old dog, I would have a biopsy of the affected gland taken at the time of anal sac flushing to get a diagnosis. Apocrine gland ACA is a bad bad disease, most tumors have already metastasized by the time of diagnosis, and with surgery + chemotherapy the median survival time is not so great (6-12 months) IF no visible mets are noted on abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiographs. If there are already visible mets, the median survival goes down despite best efforts. Personally I would simply drop the whole hypothryoidism thing (as you were most likely thinking anyway) and put your money, time, and effort into diagnosing and treating the anal gland problem with flushing/infusing/biopsy under heavy sedation or general anesthesia. In a 9 year old dog, I wouldn't do any of the above without a CBC and chemistry profile to rule out other organ dysfunctions. It may just be an impacted gland, maybe even have to be surgically removed, but getting it treated sooner rather than later will spare your dog a lot of discomfort. And if it is an apocrine gland ACA, getting it diagnosed and treated soon may buy your dog several months of good quality time. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Gluten/Dairy free Pumpkin Pie

The reason I use the Impossible Pumpkin Pie recipe is because that's the recipe I made for years before going gluten-free. Our family preferred the crustless version of pumpkin pie and no one knew or cared if it was gluten-free because it's just like the regular version we enjoyed for eons. I could also double the recipe and bake it in a 9x13" cake pan (or single recipe in an 8x8" or 9x9" pan) and serve the pie in squares, instead of wedges from a round pie dish/plate. When space is a premium in the refrigerator, square/rectangle pans take up less room than rounds. I've found most gluten-free pastry substitutes are either difficult to make, poor quality substitutes, and when they include rice flour, tend to be gritty. Nut pastry can burn easily, but I just plain don't care for any of the g-f pastry recipes I've tried - and they usually mean either increased high-glycemic carbs or a lot of additional fat. Substitutes for Bisquick/Baking Mix. I try to avoid rice flour as much as possible due to the potential for arsenic from rice; and rice flour is found in most gluten-free mixes (as well as commercial g-f products), so I prefer making my own. For one cup baking mix: 1/2 c. almond flour 1/2 c. high-maize resistant starch (available from King Arthur, and larger amounts from Honeyville Grain - you could also use any brand of gluten-free all-purpose flour) 1-1/2 t. baking powder 1/4 t. salt 1 T. coconut oil (softened, not liquid) Thoroughly mix all ingredients until the coconut oil is mixed in. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Baking Mix using Pamela's (Gluten-Free) Baking & Pancake Mix 2-1/2 c. I agree with Calliope. When adopting an animal from our Animal Rescue league part of the contract you sign requires you to take your new pet to your own vet within 3 business days. They have a whole list of vets who do the exam for free.

i agree with all of the above. one question...are his stools firm? when a dog poops, as long as their stool is firm, they pretty much take care of expressing the anal glands themselves. however, that doesn't mean it can't still "back up" and they should be expressed by someone trained to do it. if you've never done it before, don't start until you have a knowledgeable person show you. also, the smell from them being expressed is pretty nasty. i'd rather pay the vet or groomer to do it!

as for his breath, that is very likely either a problem with one or more teeth or simply a build-up of tartar. both problems should be addressed with your vet.

no don't try and express the anal glands yourself. Even when vets do it, it doesnt always go to plan (I've had two different dogs over the years that ended up with an infection after a vet expressed the glands), but if it needs doing just get a vet to do it. You can hold your dog while the vet does it (and trust me you want to turn your head the other way because it smells godawful!). Once they get blocked the best thing is to just get it done (it only takes a few minutes for the vet to do it).

Oh gosh, it sounds to me that Charlie's anal glands are overproductive - no? If he's expressing them when he's excited with company. Pups typically express them from an onset of stress. One of my pups, Vayla, would express hers as soon as we walked into the vet's office :)

You may want to Google 'overproductive anal glands'. But I wholeheartedly agree with the sage advice from the previous posters and speak with your vet.

I agree with tracigemini, too. I wouldn't express them - Charlie could get an absess or an infection, as previously noted.
