Funny (and kinda sad) situation.

Our son went to SD (he lives here in Mn) to visit his daughters and grandkids. He had told them that he made reservations at the big hotel, assuming they had a pool, and the kids and g. kids can come for an afternoon of swimming. He was running late when he checked in and was informed he was at one of the hotels in the chains, that didn't have a pool. He said he turned around and there were the daughters, kids in tow....all ready to go swimming. He said he had to go to plan 'B' as soon as he could think of it. LOL. I just get a funny mental picture of the scene at the motel. He did have a nice visit, though. Of course he took pictures, and to my shock, my two oldest great-grandsons are over 6' tall.They don't get to our town often and they were just little kids the last time I saw them. My how time flies.

Ohhh...that's too bad! Yes, I can picture the family in swimsuits, inflatable toys, towels, flip flops, etc. Hope Plan B was fun, whatever it was.

I guess we think when we don't see kids often, they don't grow or change, and we expect them to look the same as before! Our nephew stopped by and I almost didn't recognize him--he has turned into a very mature, handsome young man. So I know how surprised you were.

Socks, you described my mental picture perfectly. Actually I thought it would look like someting from the Family Circus comic strip. LOL

Yeah- DW and (especially) ME don't really give much of a hoot about gas-mileage. Right or wrong, it's just not a deciding factor in our household. I have NOTHING against people who favor higher-mileage choices. I just literally can't fit in most fuel-sippers. 6'3" I am, with more torso-length. The farming background also kinda numbs you to gas-mileage! NOTHING gets good mileage on a farm LOL! DW is 5'7", & obviously just didn't like the hulking size of the Escalade. It was the longer-wheelbase one too...Uffda! If I was magically given 2 free car choices, you'd see a large BLACK Denali or Escalade, and a BLACK CTS-V (it's the Bat-out-of-Hell version...) in MY garage. Annie & Pesky- You're too gracious! Seriously, you folks are the best! Thanks so much for listening and for all of the wonderful comments. It's -29ish this morning, but my heart is warmed... Stuff left to do: toe kicks, backsplash, cabinet crown, filler pieces, over fridge cab needs to be built and put up. Range hood vent hole through kitchen wall needs to be cut (waiting until DH goes away for a day, to do it - he's having a fit about me cutting it out. I should have done it when he was in the hospital) trebruchet: lol re: uneditable aktillery, I used Minwax stain (blend of Special Walnut & Provincial) and sealed with Waterlox. It didn't darken as much as I had hoped... Daisychain, I'll never complain about mosquitoes again - what a winter! Thanks for wine glass link Legalin :) Really hope I didn't sound trivial or plaintive last evening, I was just, shall we say, reminiscing, lol... I'm very grateful for a roof, 4 walls and a furnace! Guess, I'm just a little worn out - it's just been a long, cold winter with DH slowly recovering from being seriously ill in the fall (dang deer tick bite). Thanks again everyone! Having something funny - makes a loss so much easier . When my dad died .... I was devistated. My heart was ripped out. At the funeral home - my niece's water broke - her first baby . Everybody started panicing & scrambling around her - we completely forgot about my dad .... LOL .... I know my dad was "up there" laughing .... I'm happy when I can see alittle bit of sunshine in a sad situation.

I started up the line thanking your posts and just decided to say THANK YOU to everyone here in my reply. I really appreciate the perspectives on this situation. I come bearing good news: my son is doing much better today. We are not out of the woods yet but the doctor is pleased with his progress and we are so relieved. Thank you all for your thoughts and good wishes. Also the mother of the teammate who hit him called me last night. She was told by another parent what had happened and, of course, she felt badly. We had a nice conversation and I told her how much I appreciated her call. So all good on that too. Oh these high school sports. Interesting stories above. My DH and I both played in high school but that was a long time ago. All my kids play sports and they have learned some great life lessons about health, teamwork, respect, listening to authority, self-control. What I notice though is the year-round emphasis on strength and conditioning training at the high school level. This makes for strong teams and players who are resilient. But it also makes for a lot of teens who develop the muscles of men with the brains and decision-making skills of boys. Girls are strong and competitive too but somehow they seem more level-headed. Editing for brevity. I tend to write war-and-peace posts.

I have a funny:

Five of us educators were invites to a college in China and told we would have a HOT Tub in their guest house.

Being as there was a male amongst us, we all took our swim suits.

Needless to say, it was a bath tub with hot water. We had to draw numbers to see who got to have the HOT TUB BATH, each nite, as there was only enough hot water for ONE BATH

Good one Glenda!

When our 3 kids were young we took them to Hersey Amusement Park and made reservations at the Hersey Hotel which has a huge pool - except no one bothered to tell us that it was closed for repair! They did make arrangements for us to use a pool at a neighboring hotel but what a pain that was. So I've learned to ask if the pool is open when making reservations.
