Coming out of lurker-dom

Someone had said, that if you have been lurking for 6 months, you are not a newbie-but a friend. So here I am working on overcoming my lurker habits. (I had to re-do my log-in, but have been around for a few years)

I started on the gardening boards (vegetable gardening, winter gardening, landscaping design) then one day someone popped in and said "hey everyone! Come over to the Kitchen Table and pull up a chair!"- and I have been here since. (sitting rather quietly :))

I'm from LI, NY- DH & I are avid DIYers. We have renovated the second floor of our home and are still working on the first floor. It is time to order the kitchen but we have lost alot of our forward momentum since DH started working nights (not enough seniority to work days).

As for family, it is really just DH & I. I have a step son, but he does not live with us or communicate much unless he needs something. He does talk to his father occasionally which is good. We don't have a dog since Quincy passed a few years ago (golden retriever). DH was the "chosen human" and he took the loss hard. So far we have a stray cat that I am working on friendship and communication (my post -Can't understand the Cat)

DH & I both love the out doors. When we were courting we used to go camping frequently. We have a dream to eventually move to a rural area, someplace with a view and less neighbors, congestion and noise. The grass always seems greener on the other side. :)

I my opinion, you should definately grout something when mirror or cut glass is used because the pieces are so sharp and someone could cut themselves. If the glass was tumbled or ground smooth, it might be OK to go without grout, but the grout is really helpful in adding strength to the project, so I prefer to grout, especially balls because it always seems like a piece could fall off if it is sitting just right. The grout helps hold it all together because there are less pressure points on each individual piece. I am not an expert but that is how I see things. As for how to put your pieces on....do what is pleasing to your eye. There are no rules when it comes to art. As for grouting over what you have already done...yes you can do that if what you did bothers you. I think grouting can be more difficult than putting the pieces on. I am not a patient person, so it's hard for me to put the grout on and then wait for it to dry for a few minutes, then the hour or more it can take to clean up. You'll get better the more you do it.

You won't believe how easy the bottle was...after getting all the glue from the lable off I etched it with Armour Etch (got it at Michael's) make sure the bottle is dry then run a string of 20-35 Christmas lights in through the mouth of it...cut apart silk flower picks from the local craft store to be able to make your own floral design arrange them to hide the cord coming out the back and add a bow (mine was raffia)....that is it...Hope that helps Marlene 2008

I love your gardens, and those tropicals look great. I must try a banana some day, as I've got the cannas , gingers, lots of potted palms, and many other tropicals I move out for my summer garden. Just recently the brugs as well, and hopefully mine will bloom much earlier next year, rather than late Oct, and early November for their first blooms this year. That's much too late to appreciate them once the days get chilly and I'm not in the garden nearly as often, and I'd like a long season of bloom as well.

Welcome Lambsear. I spent my childhood in Huntington Station (in the 50's) and live now in a small town in rural, very northern NY. I have lots of family near and far. Golden Retrievers are my favorite dog, but I am no longer owned by one.

lambsear - So glad you came out of lurkdom.

I also had a golden named Quincy. Isn't that something? You may have seen me post about him in the past. We had to have him put to sleep back in January. We still aren't over it!

I dont think we were ever owed by Quincy, but he certainly captured out hearts. Now the cat- he definately thinks he is in charge.

Pam- they say that life is separted by 6 degrees- I work in Huntington Station and have family in Cambrige NY. Too funny!

Wow--Quincy is gorgeous! I know he will never be forgotten.

Sending you a welcome from Pennsylvania. (But I attended 5th and 6th grades at a boarding school in Brentwood, LI, and spent all my childhood/teenage summers in Sag Harbor.)

Oh! Your Quincy looked just like my Frazier. We also had to have Frazier put to sleep in June. He was 15. That wasn't as hard as he had lived a good long life. Still, it is weird going on without him.

I could not find good pics but here's a pic from about 4 years ago of Frazier and Quincy. (Quincy was only 3 when he was put to sleep)

I don't post a lot but do try to contribute a photo most days on the I'll show you mine thread. I'm an avid camper. My favorite destination is the Bighorn Mts. of Wyoming.

Something to eat you ask?
I am a baker, especially when I feel the need to be productive. So far my best accomplishments is an awsome cheese cake (recepie is from epicurious). I also make a wonderful apple pie (per DH- recepie from Penzy spices)

I can make a pretty good lasagna or egg plant parm- but I do have a terrific recepie for a spinach pasta roll. I've made this for christmas and even the kids who dont like veggies will eat it!

Welcome from another newbie. I and divorced from the same man twice and he is still on my FB site and lives nearby Kudos to his current wife who does a much better job than I did!! I live in Alexandria, VA and have 2 cats 3 married girls and need a Qunicy to hug as I lost my last dog too. Painful isn'tit. These people on here are so understanding ane sensitive. I would love your apple pie right now. I can call it dinner. smile

Welcome, lambsear. Loved the picture of Quincy. I know how difficult it is to lose a fur baby but the best medicine is to adopt another one. I have a goldendoodle (50% golden retriever and 50% poodle), my sweetie before her was a golden retriever mix from the humane society. I grew up in Baldwin, L. I. but haven't lived there in over 50 years.

Hey Lambsear! Nice to read a bit about you. I'm the wife of ronf and we live in SE Minnesota out in the country. I'm originally from Texas, moved away when I was 35 to New Mexico, lived there 10 years and now in MN for 10 years. We have 5 kids and 2 grandbabies. We also have a dog, Lucy, a cat, Buddy, 4 ducks and 1 chicken! We love the outdoors too but not when it gets too cold, which will be happening any time now (grrrrrrrr!).

What a sweet puppy you have!
