My first thought was red too...I'd love the red and biege walls together too. Oh where did our little baby go?? I can't believe he's moving on! What a great set for him. I can't wait to see the pics of the finished room! Good choice for a little boy. I think the red accents would be perfect to break up the blue.

I think the red against beige walls would be striking, Steph. Or even denim/chambray, that would be nice too. You could trim it out with red rick-rack, which is becoming hugely popular again.

This boy's room is going to be great, what fun you're having and you have such good taste, too. Love the dalmation bedding.

I never intended to do an actual theme in his room. I was going to just get a patchwork type quilt in boyish colors but when I saw this, I had to get it for him. The colors were bright and he loves dogs, fire hydrants and hoses! And it's easy enough to change out in a couple/few years if we get bored with it.

I made denim curtains for DGS#3 and I made the tabs at the top out of red gingham checks and it came out really cute. He's 4 now and they haven't changed it yet!!!

You've gotten some excellent suggestions here. There are some very talented people over in the *Decorating Forum*. You could try there too.

You are worried about matching the red sheets to the valances right? I know reds are hard to match. You could make the valences out of the sheets or pillow cases? Valances in a child's room should be light and airy and shouldn't be real heavy. When choosing your red tone compare it with the wood tone. Some woods are 'orange-y' and don't play well with certain reds.

I think beige walls are the way to go. You don't want to be overwhelmed with a blast of color. You can always change the room decor later without having to repaint.

dilly_dally, the fabrics I'm worried about matching would be if I tried matching the plaids or patterned fabrics from the quilt. I'd want them exact. Or even the blue, it would have to match perfectly. The red would be the easiest to match, and I would consider using the same fabric as the sheets to make the valance (if I made them). I dont want an actual drapery, just something decorative to give the window some color.

How about brining in a third color into the decor? Like the yellow that is in the quilt. Since there is not so much yellow in the quilt as the other two colors it won't be so obvious if the match to the sheets and valance are not an exact match. Just a thought.

Using the color wheel, red blue and yellow go well together, so do red blue and green. Then again, beige works with everything. One suggestion, think ahead to Grant's teenage years. He won't want friends to see his room if there's a firetruck quilt in there. My girls had Baby Disney decor when they were little, then changed to black and white cows, then lavendar. Kids are fickle. Have fun!

When my 20 year old was small, his room was Lenox Tan with a black comforter and red curtains. The red against the tan is just gorgeous. The blue with the tan and red curtains will be beautiful. I also think that the red shade on the brushed stainless lamp will look great.

jannie, I'm not at all worried about his teenage years. Thats not for another 11 years and by then, the room will have completely changed. I have no intention of using this firetruck bedding to take him through adolescense. It's cute now but in a few years from now, I'm sure he'll want something else. That's why I'm painting the walls neutral and just leaving the bedding and accessories easily changeable.

susan, that website is where I got the quilt from. I saw those sheets but didnt care for them. I thought they were too busy and didnt match the quilt enough (I'm picky, lol). Thank you anyway though, that was nice of you to look it up for me.

I'd do the plain red valances. For sheeets, you could probably do yellow, red or if you could find, white ones with little dalmation dogs -- those could be cute.

If you could/do find the exact blues and choose that instead for the windows, I would recommend a yellow wall. I love yellow walls! They are so bright and friendly and blend/match a lot easier than most people think. Of course, with red valances, it's too much.

We are doing the guest room over for DGS here too with baby #2 planned for next year. We have blues and tan and red in the linens as well as white and a little lime. The walls will be tan with white trim. We haven't bought the area rug yet, but the curtains will be the same navy with top stitching in all the colors from the quilt. Since he has the front bedroom looking out on the street, DD wanted curtains for privacy. Also using honeycomb shades in white under the curtains.

We need new lampshades, and I think I will trim up some white shades with the colors from the quilt. We will also be buying a little decor for the walls, though his great grandmother made a darling framed needlepoint locomotive picture for his dad that will be highlighted. And he will get to display some of his dad's mobiles from his room when he was a boy.

When his other grandparents visit from out of state, they will use his new room, and he will be bunked somewhere else in the house for the duration of the visit. That will be interesting to see how well he might sleep elsewhere.
