Sesame Street video shot on my road (and in my house)

I think I may have posted this here some time ago--I can't remember! But a friend posted it on Facebook this week, and I'll probably repost it there because it'll bring back memories for some of my friends.

The video was shot by a videographer who used to live in my house. It starts out with my neighbor and his cows. The milk truck goes down my road, and the baby fusses in what is now my bedroom. There was another video that showed the milk being delivered to my porch, but I haven't seen that one in years.

I recently ran into the milk truck driver and told him to look for this video on YouTube. The funny thing is, my kids and I used to watch the videos on Sesame Street without realizing we were looking at our neighbors and our own home. Glad someone finally told us. LOL

Ron, the newspaper where I'm working for a couple of weeks runs a "Smile of the Day" on the front page of every issue. Today it's a picture of a "smiling" cow--courtesy of me, who spotted an attractive Jersey on my way home the other day. :-)

If that's ivy, which I think it is immoral to plant anywhere, then I do dare to question the master gardener's masterfulness. Yup, it's a b**** to remove. Takes persistence, repeated efforts, or chemicals. Regarding the landscaping, well, here's the thing. You have a property that is not condusive to lawn for many reasons - slope, trees, culvert. Yet you want lawn. To get plants to grow where they are not well suited, whether the plant is grass or anything else, is a labour-intensive proposition. If your vision is of cruising around the lot on your riding mower for an hour per week, you've basically got the wrong property. What you'll be doing if you seed all this over is watering almost constantly, and juggling weeding, aerating, moss control, and overseeding with mowing. All property requires maintenance to look good. Even hardscape needs sweeping. Groundcovers of all types, including grass, need trimming and weeding. The variety of terrains you have there means that no one plant, including grass, is going to meet all your needs. Putting the right plant in the right place in each instance will minimize maintenance, but it will consist of different tasks in different places. The process of picking the right plant for the right place can be an arduous one; certainly in a case like this it requires some knowledge of plants and study of the site. Here's the irony: the least labour-intensive option on the slope is probably to let those trees grow, and have a mature woodland out there. Very little will grow in the dense shade and with the root competition those trees will soon provide if they don't already, nor will it avoid suffocation under the annual drop of leaves. You'd have trouble establishing any plant there, including grass (and it would be hard to mow on that slope), so why not make that work for you? Many ground covers can be mowed too. But that ivy, I'd keep after and get rid of. KarinL

Here in tree-hugging California you are are required to get a permit to remove any tree in your own yard that is more than 38" in circumference. You can and will be fined if you do...in the thousands of dollars. Even if you planted that tree yourself 40 years ago, fertilized and watered and pruned it. You have to provide proof that said tree qualifies for removal. (see below) Then you must replace it with a new tree 24" box size, OR pay an in-lieu--of fee which goes to planting a tree somewhere in our wonderful city. Are we the land of Fruits and Nuts?????? YUP ...but our weather is perfect here. *************************************************************** 1. The tree is diseased or badly damaged. 2. The tree represents a potential hazard to people, structures or other trees. 3. The tree is in sound condition but restricts the owners’ ability to enjoy the reasonable use or economic potential of the property. It may also unreasonably restrict an adjoining property owner’s use or economic potential of the adjoining property. If this applies, the factors below will be used to make a decision regarding removal. If the tree is healthy, the following factors shall be used to evaluate the application:  The need to allow construction of improvements and to allow economic or reasonable enjoyment of property  The approximate age of the tree relative to its average life span  The limited useful landscape value due to its inappropriate species, size and location relative to the existing structures on the property  The topography of the land and the effect of the requested action on water retention and diversion or increased flow of surface water The potential effect of removal on soil erosion and stability where the tree is located  Current and future visual screening potential  Overcrowding of trees unreasonably restricting the use of the land

First Polly...I meant NJ..LOL...loved it ! Dee I am so glad you liked it...at the very end it says the musician and the name of the piece...The Farewell. I sure hope this will inspire you to do what you can to get back into an active lifestyle. Your words are " play" and that is exactly as it should be. No reason it has to be competitive or terribly difficult or involove 1000's of miles or expense...you hit it perfectly...fun. Maybe you have a friend that can join you...or a spouse or SO or.....child ??? Let me know....wish you were close by. c

There is a wheelchair sitting on my front porch. I wonder if he saw that and felt like we would be an easy mark. Of course, he couldn't see that until he got up to the house though. I had my other house broken in. I came home to the doors open, all the drawers in the house pulled out, and cupboards all open. I thought he had stolen my wedding rings, and I was very upset, but I found them 18 months later. I had broken my wrist and put them in a baggy in my china cabinet, in a candy jar. In the jar was about $5 in change. He took the change and I thought, my rings, but several months later, I moved a covered dish in the cabinet and found the baggy, where he had shoved it out of the way in the far back corner of the cabinet. He didn't realize the rings were in there because he couldn't find the light switch and the only light he had was from opening the refrigerator door.

That was fun and interesting. When we lived in MD we had the University of Maryland agricultural farm right behind our property. They had cows and it never ceased to bring a smile to my face and excite me when I saw them in my back yard....on the other side of the fence of course. Brought back memories for me, too. Thanks.

Nice, nice memories.... however, those days are too long gone; at least in my experience. Hopefully, there are some "organic or return to the old ways" farmers producing our food. Just not enough. (JMO) Lovely, lovely film tho.

I sometimes got to spend a little time at my friend's house whose family ran a dairy farm. I've always loved cows. I remember saying how fascinating it was to watch the process of them milking. Sometimes they'd hand milk one or two, don't know why. But the rest were all milked by the type of machines shown in this film. She was VERY quick to tell me that it lost its 'fascination' when you had to milk them twice a day, and all the work involved in running the farm.

So thanks for a trip down memory lane.

I didn't watch the video but I think I remember the video! Can't believe it was your house! I still sing the song.

Me and my FB friends post Sesame Street videos all the time. Scary how many songs we remember.

That was a cool old video Alisande. But the crisis could have been averted for baby had mommy provided the milk nature gave her. Felt kind of bad for the babe at the end who had simply had a bottle shoved at her. No cuddling. Sigh.

Actually dairy farming has not changed all that much. My friend lived on one 40 plus years back. I recently visited a cheese factory which had a piece on how the milk got to the factory. Not much different from the video the old days of my friends farm. Just more product control and testing.

You're preaching to the choir, Wildchild.....I'm a retired La Leche League Leader. LOL

Actually, the baby (one of twins, BTW) was breastfed in real life. But I agree.....I don't think they should have used a baby at all. Giving an older child a glass of milk would have been better IMO.

Nanny, the dairy farm is still in operation, now run by the younger brother of the man in the video. Guess there are a few of them left. It's a demanding business.
