Sesame Street video shot on my road (and in my house)

I think I may have posted this here some time ago--I can't remember! But a friend posted it on Facebook this week, and I'll probably repost it there because it'll bring back memories for some of my friends.

The video was shot by a videographer who used to live in my house. It starts out with my neighbor and his cows. The milk truck goes down my road, and the baby fusses in what is now my bedroom. There was another video that showed the milk being delivered to my porch, but I haven't seen that one in years.

I recently ran into the milk truck driver and told him to look for this video on YouTube. The funny thing is, my kids and I used to watch the videos on Sesame Street without realizing we were looking at our neighbors and our own home. Glad someone finally told us. LOL

Ron, the newspaper where I'm working for a couple of weeks runs a "Smile of the Day" on the front page of every issue. Today it's a picture of a "smiling" cow--courtesy of me, who spotted an attractive Jersey on my way home the other day. :-)

lazygardens: I have measured that distance. The driver is 15 feet back from the edge of the pavement when trying to merge into traffic, so can't have anything tall in that first 15 feet. There are three large trees (2 Sycamores that are 30-40 feet and a mature Horsechestnut) set back 25 feet from the road. So that leaves just ten feet that could have taller planting on the way to the trees. I understand your idea of gradually increasing heights from perennials to shrubs to low growing trees to the big trees, I just don't think there is room to implement it. I have seen people try to fill in a line of shrubs between existing tall trees and that always seems to look wrong, so the more naturalistic idea does make more sense. Yardvaark: Yes, I did fail to profess my love of the house! It is lovely and I would hope whatever we end up doing adds to that. I would certainly agree that the existing plantings don't show off the house and the yews are certainly not doing it any favors, but haven't had the budget previously to deal with this. Old houses and upkeep, you know! Remember that photos always focus your eye on what is close up in a way that you don't do in real life, so the house is more visible that it appears above. So I think you are saying that you don't think it's right to try to make the front private at all? I do feel that these old places are sort of in the public domain. On the other hand, for fourteen years I've been able to go grab the paper in the morning without getting dressed. Now that the lilac hedge that did run the length of the house is gone, I'm finding that lack of privacy irritating. So what would you do to complement the house in your ideal world?

Here in tree-hugging California you are are required to get a permit to remove any tree in your own yard that is more than 38" in circumference. You can and will be fined if you do...in the thousands of dollars. Even if you planted that tree yourself 40 years ago, fertilized and watered and pruned it. You have to provide proof that said tree qualifies for removal. (see below) Then you must replace it with a new tree 24" box size, OR pay an in-lieu--of fee which goes to planting a tree somewhere in our wonderful city. Are we the land of Fruits and Nuts?????? The tree represents a potential hazard to people, structures or other trees. 3. One day I'd like to go back to Whittier and spend a little time looking around. Because the tunnel schedule is so regimented, we could make one quick drive through the town before the northbound traffic was opened, otherwise we would have to wait a whole hour for the next opportunity. The town is pretty much shuttered up so there wasn't much to see really. There are a couple shots of Whittier in the video after the triangle tunnel shot. Cruise ships were not allowed in Whittier for many years. They just started allowing them again last year. I think it had something to do with how shallow their harbor is. They probably dredged it or something to make it deeper because Alaska would like to see more tourists. Jodi-

Oh MY. That's the way my Grandfather and brother raised their cows and provided milk for others way back when. All their cows were named and part of their workforce and much loved. How different from our 'milk producing factories of today. Thank you for bringing back those often told memories that we have left behind.

That was fun and interesting. When we lived in MD we had the University of Maryland agricultural farm right behind our property. They had cows and it never ceased to bring a smile to my face and excite me when I saw them in my back yard....on the other side of the fence of course. Brought back memories for me, too. Thanks.

Nice, nice memories.... however, those days are too long gone; at least in my experience. Hopefully, there are some "organic or return to the old ways" farmers producing our food. Just not enough. (JMO) Lovely, lovely film tho.

I sometimes got to spend a little time at my friend's house whose family ran a dairy farm. I've always loved cows. I remember saying how fascinating it was to watch the process of them milking. Sometimes they'd hand milk one or two, don't know why. But the rest were all milked by the type of machines shown in this film. She was VERY quick to tell me that it lost its 'fascination' when you had to milk them twice a day, and all the work involved in running the farm.

So thanks for a trip down memory lane.

I didn't watch the video but I think I remember the video! Can't believe it was your house! I still sing the song.

Me and my FB friends post Sesame Street videos all the time. Scary how many songs we remember.

That was a cool old video Alisande. But the crisis could have been averted for baby had mommy provided the milk nature gave her. Felt kind of bad for the babe at the end who had simply had a bottle shoved at her. No cuddling. Sigh.

Actually dairy farming has not changed all that much. My friend lived on one 40 plus years back. I recently visited a cheese factory which had a piece on how the milk got to the factory. Not much different from the video the old days of my friends farm. Just more product control and testing.

You're preaching to the choir, Wildchild.....I'm a retired La Leche League Leader. LOL

Actually, the baby (one of twins, BTW) was breastfed in real life. But I agree.....I don't think they should have used a baby at all. Giving an older child a glass of milk would have been better IMO.

Nanny, the dairy farm is still in operation, now run by the younger brother of the man in the video. Guess there are a few of them left. It's a demanding business.
