Hot Flashes and Vitamin E?

On the HRT thread, Lindaohnowga, you mentioned using Vitamin E would help with the hot flashes.

I bought some yesterday. I got the 200 IU. It says to take 1 pill in the morning with breakfast.

Do you, or anyone who uses it for hot flashes, think that's enough? Or is it "try it and see"? lol

I believe 400 IU is the usual dose for Vit. E.

I don't remember if it helped me with hot flashes, but I've taken it on and off for years. You might investigate some other things as well. I was a big fan of motherwort during menopause. If you Google motherwort flashes, you'll see why. :-)

BTW, I took it in combination with hawthorn to help with the heart palpitations I was getting at the time.

I was also looking for black cohosh yesterday, as I'd heard a while back that it helps. Couldn't find it in the store I was in, so picked up the Vit. E.

I understand that Premphrase is for Peri-menopausal women, right? Is it all natural? It can take between 30 and 90 days to start feeling the effects of a natural supplement. Hope this helps. Bobbi

Hi debbi2006 i am 46 and perimenopausal and have been for the past year i too had a hysterectomy at age 30 i have also had blood taken to check for menopause but your really hit and miss with this method because it just doesnt show up anything unless your body id going crazy, i get mad hot flashes morning noon and night for about 16 days out of a month i know it menopause related because i now follow a daily chart since i cannot rely on monthly periods my chart helps me to see when im gona be suffering with particular problems the flashes are horrid uncomfortable embarrasing and i have no way of stopping them despite all my best efforts with various vitamin supplements, i have managed to get the palpatations under control tho apparently you can buy a product Mila chia seeds which stop the flashes buti cannot get them here in england you could try that take care hope you feel better sooner rather than later hun

I hate to be a grinch and maybe you have escaped the hot flashes but I have had hot flashes on and off for a couple years - I thought they had stopped but they returned two times after flash-free periods of months. However everyone is different so I hope that your hot flashes stay away! Mine have been the worst ever in our hot temps recently - perhaps it is the contrast between our temps outside and air conditioning inside that is confusing my hypothalamus! I do lead a healthy lifestyle but admit I do need my 2 c. of strong coffee in the morning and maybe it is time to give it up (sob).

If I remember correctly (that's a problem in itself!), the test for estrogen level was pretty definitive - I was below the level that I was supposed to be, and I think the doc tested me again in about 6 months without an improvement. By then, I knew without them telling me that the remaining ovary wasn't working and that I was going in to menopause. My mother also did not provide any info. She, in fact, said it wasn't that bad. For me, it's been 10 years of hell. I started with hot flashes about every 1/2 hour, and now I'm about every 1.5-2 hours. That's a lot (or not much) of disturbed sleep. I do remember something that my doc told me, but I haven't really researched it - women who have less body fat have more severe menopausal symptoms because they don't have any or have less stored estrogen. Not that that will make you feel any better! Still, my exercise kind of keeps me sane and out of the "poor me" mindframe. Hopefully, this isn't really menopause for you. I have seen some comments about hot flashes from women going off the pill - maybe doc can answer whether that's common.

At the site in the link, Vitamin E is mentioned. The women there took 1000IU. Tumeric is also listed and that did help me with episodes of feeling hot (not sure if I was having actual hot flashes or not). I was taking it for something else, but after reading it was a cure for hot flashes I realize I haven't been having them.

I once read in the newspaper that Vitamin E can cause more problems than good. The site below shows some of the side effects at high doses, but it doesn't say what a high dose is. V E can cause bleeding. It seems that anything that helps menopause symptoms causes bleeding.

Check with your Dr. before taking over the recommended dose. Lots of information on Vit. E--some good, some not so good. or check with the pharmacist. Years ago I took a food supplement called Change of Lite (or something similar) which did have Black Colish + I never had problems.

I took black cohosh for a few months hoping that it would help with the hot flashes. It didn't help me. I believe I read that you are not supposed to take it longer than 6 months.

I used vitamin E, along with omega 3 fish oil and flax seed oil in the hope it would help with my dry eyes.

I eliminated the vitamin E after about 2 years, but have continued to use the fish oil and flax seed oil for dry eyes. It didn't help with the hot flashes because I still have them.
