Your state fair - do you go?

DH loves state fairs. He would go every single day if he could. We don't ride rides or play games. We just walk around and look at stuff. And eat -- a lot!! DH loves it so much that one of his goals in life is to visit every state fair in the country. I am less than enthusiastic...but will tag along someday when he decides to pursue that dream.

Anyway, we are going to the Oklahoma State Fair today in OKC. There is also a Tulsa State Fair, although I really don't know why. Are other states that way, too?

QUESTION: Do you go to your state fair? Why or why not? If you go, what do you like most?

I went a couple of days ago, with my friend Helen from Newkirk. We did the OKC one.

I love looking at the exhibits of stuff people made. I used to make and exhibit at our county fair, in Kay County, when I lived there.

While looking at all those pretty things, with the ribbons on them, I was wishing I had some stuff displayed there as well.

Maybe I will next year.

Personally, I love watching the judging of some of the animals (sheep, calf and horse) as well, but Helen doesn't, thus we bypassed that.

I also like looking at the stuff for sale. Don't often my anything, but I like looking.

Above all, no fair without eating a turkey leg. :)

I used to go every year in SC. It was a great fair! I went to the Florida State Fair one time, and was so bored, I never went back. I do enjoy the county fairs.

Saw your post and pics on the Decor forum and have to agree with others that the worst wear is from the weather. But, you also have a combination of mold, algae, old solid stain (or paint) on the surface and possible rot under the boards. As handymac mentioned, the joints and screw heads look suspicious. We always had a wood deck when we lived in Calif and even with our short rainy season we had to clean and restain at least every two years. Like yours, it would wear worst in the areas exposed to the sun and rain while the areas under the eaves looked untouched. I hated that deck as much as I loved it! Cedar is a very soft wood and I can understand your son not wanting you to use the pressure washer. Judging by the pics, it appears you already have raised grain in several areas. To get the deck nice again, I think you're going to need to sand the surface and then treat it with something that will strip everything that's left. After that it will need yearly treatments. If you go to all that trouble I'd suggest laying flagstone, precast concrete, etc. at the bottom of your steps and training the dogs to go there as long as possible. But my guess is that eventually, as the dogs age, they won't be able to use the steps and will probably start using the deck again. Our current home has a composite deck and I can't say enough good about it. No more chemicals and no more treatments! I know others recommended replacing your boards with a composite, but it's not that simple. Composite needs more support than wood so the structure underneath your deck will need some 'beefing up'. Unless all the work needed to restore your deck will be DIY, I suggest you calculate the costs of treatment, sanding, and continued costs of staining, then compare that to the cost of replacing the boards with composite. Before doing anything, I would have someone climb under the deck, if possible, and check for rot. If you have rot, nothing will adhere to the wood. BTW, I think rubber mats will just hold more moisture and cause things to rot faster.

Florida State Fair is going on right now in Tampa, Fl. Did anybody enter their plants? Check out The Florida Living Center. We had several from different clubs I belong to enter plants. Talked to one of the ladies last night. She entered 10 plants. She won 7 blue ribbons - paying $12 each! and three red ribbons. Don't remember how much money from those. We had members that entered the baking competition, photos, and antiques sections Go check out the aquariums. I entered 4 - ten gallon tanks. I WON 4 ribbons! 2 blue ribbons - pays $ 50 each, 1 red ribbon - pays $30, and 1 white ribbon - pays $20. Cool beans!!! I am one happy camper. Walk around your yard and see what looks good now and next come next December, fill out the paper work. It's very easy to enter and you get a free ticket to the fair..............cheryl

Central OH. I was raised near Cincinnati - my husband and I moved to San Diego to find work (for him, a carpenter) in late 1979 due to the recession - construction and factory jobs had crashed to a halt. I stayed there after we split; really felt more at home there than I ever had in OH. But, after almost 13 years, the cost of living was becoming a strain and I wanted some family near as well - so back to OH, this time to Columbus, though, and I have found it to be a very pleasant place to live. Lots of parks, cycling and hiking, great live music, very many good and varied restaurants including lots of ethnic (various African, middle eastern, and other-than-Chinese Asian.) All sorts of activity. The past two summers have been hotter and more humid than the first 25, but I still find them tolerable (I like heat) and the winters are still pretty moderate -- the past 2 weeks of erratic weather notwithstanding - I don't mind them at all. Still, I think about trying another part of the country. I would like to go back to the San Diego area but do not think it would be a wise financial move.

The state fair in MO is in Sedalia (about 4 hours from St. Louis). I've never been to the fair, but we have been to Sedalia and saw the fairgrounds (which were huge!).

I'd like the food and exhibits, but not sure that would make it worth the drive. lol

I'm a former Missourian and I always loved the state fair in Sedalia, to which I've been at least half a dozen times. I particularly enjoyed the animal exhibits and the Girl Scout exhibits. (I'm a Curved Bar scout and once had my badge sash displayed because I had the most badges of any scout in the state.) This was all long ago, and at that time the state fair food was pretty unimaginative, largely limited to such things as hot dogs (great) and cotton candy (ugh). Even so, there's an atmosphere to state fairs that I've always missed after 50 years in New York City. Until my partner died 10 years ago we had a country house upstate and would attend the Ulster County fair each year, but although it was fun it didn't measure up to the old-fashioned state fairs of my youth!

I used to go to the Mid South Fair in Memphis every year. I took my daughter til she was grown and after that my best friend and I would go after getting off from work at 7am. We would go eat breakfast somewhere and by the time we were finished the gates would be open.
I used to enter some of my crafts in exhibits at the fair and I enjoyed looking at other crafters' work too. When my dd was young I rode the rides with her, but I lost the desire to ride any of them years ago.

When crime in Memphis became so prevalent I quit going, but 7 years ago when my young niece came to live with us her mother wanted to take her to the Fair. I started taking a vacation day every year so I could take them early in the morning. I bought ride tickets for them and made sure they had enough money to eat all they wanted. I then headed to the exhibit buildings and spent my time there for a few hours so they could have some time together. My sister died in March 2006. Anna and I haven't been back since then. I've considered going this year because it's going to be the last year for the Mid South Fair in Memphis. Starting next year it's going to be in Tunica, Mississippi.

Our Tri State Fair is going on all week. I think today is the last day. They will tear down tonight.

I used to love to go and still would I guess, but mainly for the corn dogs and Mexican food. Oh, and of course a funnel cake. I do enjoy the exhibits and the animals. I've never cared for the rides. Fear and equilibrium keep me on the ground on the midway. :) We used to have some great shows there too, but the big names have quit signing up for some reason.

Iowa State Fair is the best in the country. I just wish it wasn't in August when it is so hot. I go every other year. The indoor exhibits are my favorite. I go for the cotton candy.

I used to go to the state fair in Dallas every year until I decided I didn't have to go. DH LOVES it. But when you go with him you see every thing there is to see and after a while!! Give me a break!! So, a few years ago I quit going, but he's still going. One year he took one of our nieces and he's gone w/ his friends. Our East Texas fair is going on right now and we always go out one morning w/ one of my BFFs and her DH and we eat lunch. Yummo. No admission before 12:00 noon and we always get a new yardstick!! But that state fair? I'm finished w/ that!!

No..I don't think PA has one.
I did love to go to the MN state fair. I worked for a company with a large office there, and I tried to schedule myself there during the state fair as often as I could.

I used to go every year and walk the midway, eat and watch people, especially my grandchildren. With my knees so bad I have probably been to my last fair. Oh, yes!! Love the big ole cones of icecream.

When my Kiddos were small and we lived in Dallas we attended the State Fair. My Kiddos loved the animals. I was there for the Cotten Candy, Funnel Cake and Corn Dogs. LOL~

Our's is coming up next month. Called Greater Baton Rouge State Fair. We do usually go at least once every year, for what else???? FOOD!! LOL

The Michigan State Fair is held near Detroit, but when we went thru the upper penninsula this summer we passed the "U.P. State Fair", I believe it was in Escanaba, you know, the one in da moonlight!

We usually go to the Colorado State Fair, it's where we live (Pueblo). There's a free shuttle from the mall to the fair so you don't have to worry about parking near the fair, which is packed. We just wander around, maybe buy something, I got a couple of leather purses there before, and of course eat.

I've never really enjoyed the fair even when I was a kid. I've seen too many people spending too much money on things they don't need. The kids have been asking to go and at some point we will take them. They can make up their own minds as to whether or not it's fun.

We used to go every year,but my knees aren't so good anymore so we havn't been to the last 2.Actually this year i had just had a total knee replacement just before it started.
We just walk around also and go mostly for the gardens/plants and home arts shows,and of course to eat.

I never go to the New York State Fair because it's held in Syracuse, well over 200 miles away!

I've gone to the Indiana State Fair as long as I could remember. Now that I have my own kiddos, I go twice :) Once with everyone, and we go with the kids' flow. And I go again with Jacob to see what we missed the first time.

We have a State Fair Train which leaves about a mile from our house. It takes about 40 minutes to get to the fairgrounds, and the kids love riding the train.
