About 1958 our mission agency had bought a farm on the edge of a city in rural Korea and wanted to build a modified Western-style home for an agriculturalist who was to come to operate it as a demonstration farm. Most Korean farmers made their living on just under 3 acres of land. We'd had trouble finding Korean builders to build houses in the ways that suited us in the cities, let alone in that rural area and made a deal with a U.S.-based company who was building for various U.S. agencies. On one occasion a military helicopter (capacity about a dozen) brought some of them to our location and they took some of us up for a brief ride. There are mountains and hills through most of Korea but our area, but we could see some in the distance, and the East China Sea, between Korea and China, was a few miles away, to the west. There are over 20-foot tides there - which we enjoyed, with a sand beach that stretched out for about 1/8th of a mile when the tide went out, at the beach which mission agencies had leased, a few miles from there. Unfortunately ... the builder "went broke" ... leaving sub-contractors holding the bag ... and, with walls up and roof on, with door and window frames in, they put a "stop-work" order on the house. There it sat through most of the summer, looking like a skull, sitting up there on the hillside. We had to pay about one and a half times for that house! We looked for alternative accomodation for the Findlay family, with four daughters aged 4 - 14 ... but couldn't find any. So, when they arrived in early September, we shoe-horned them into Ed's little 2-br. Japanese-style house, with the sliding, paper-covered doors and all ... with the little girl in a semi-crib in a small room just off the parent's room, while we settled the three older daughters on a built-in sofa and other beds in the living room. I went to Japan to meet Sue in early Oct. (she said that had I not been there to meet her ... she'd have gone home to Mother), we travelled to Korea on a ship ... and were married in Seoul a week or so later. It took us three days to get married: you'd think that it would have stuck for more than 11 years! Then she, too, was shoe-horned into that little Japanese-style home - we had an upstairs bedroom, and an office at one end of the house, to more or less call ours ... for about 3-1/2 months, till the Findlay's new home was finished. _______________________ In 1967, Canada's Centennial Year, when we had a World Expo in Montreal, Sue's Mom, a teacher/librarian, came up from Iowa in early June to attend with us, then returned to finish her M.A. course in Iowa City. When we went down in late summer to her grad., she took us and Sue's brother's family for a holiday to the Wisconsin Dells and one of the activities there was that we went for a helicopter ride over the town and the park. Unfortuately, Bruce, approaching 6 at the time, remembers little of it ... I don't remember whether Kathryn, closing in on 3, went: I think not. Hi Glenda, Sure glad your son didn't stay in the cemetery ... ... did he? I've been accused of being full of hot air, on occasion ... but haven't put any of it into a balloon yet. Have never ridden in one, either. Hope you're well started on a busy week. It's been snowing and blowing today and getting colder - it's to go down to about 5 degrees tonight and about 3 or 4 below for a couple of days. No. I'm much younger, thinner, and cuter when I'm at the Table. ;-) Other than that, I'm pretty much "me" when I'm here (other than, as others have said, I have to curb my opinions sometimes so as to not be censored by the powers that be). I stopped by the thrift store and found an Eagle (Brand) Craftstor craft module. I have a large tote, the sewing module, and two compact totes (saving to give to a couple of my nieces), and several of the smaller insert storage modules. I'm still searching for the older, dark purple totes or another sewing module. I can't find them, even on eBay now. The first photo shows a sewing module. It's about 9x9x9x. The one I have is purple! It holds everything I need to take to the quilt shop for an evening of piecework. The module I found yesterday has different inserts, I think it's a knitting or crochet tote, but it's the same size as the sewing module. This was an excellent line of craft/sewing totes, well made in the USA and now discontinued. :( Here's the large craft tote with several inserts. I'm hoping to find this in the original deep purple/fuschia/teal colorway.

Gas! The only way to cook. Ideally, I want a dual fuel stove...gas cooktop and electric/convection double oven. What I'll probably get is a gas range. What I have is a wounded electric range. If I set the oven to 410 degrees, the oven will, eventually, heat up to 350. It takes it about 30 minutes to reach this temp. Three of the four burners work. Still, I'm not cooking over an open buffalo-chip fire to feed six children, so I'm not complaining!

No, we don't have a dining room. Just an eat-in kitchen. When I retire, and we move from here, I sure hope I have a dining room again. I miss it!

I don't know that you'd call it formal, but we do have a dining room table, oak, oval and it's covered up with stuff for Woody to look at when he gets home from CO. Mail, stock stuff, electric reading light that won't work, my purse, all kinds of junk. It's a total mess, thanks for making me look at all that, Sandy! Brat. lol

Yes, I do. It has a runner on it with a fruit bowl (Iris-depression ware). There are bananas in the bowl.

Yes, but like others,our "formal" dining room has become a catch-all for stuff that is transitory... library books, clothes to be folded, items to return, and so forth.

If you remove the word "formal".......mine has the serger on it right now (I moved the other stuff off!!) as I'm going to sew quilt blocks when I get off this machine.

Well, I would not call it formal, but on my dining table is a load of laundry to fold, and another to put away (already folded).

Last year, we were lucky enough to find an old 50's table with a free sign on it. It has the chrome legs and vinyl (?) top and is in brand-new condition. Doesn't fit with the Tuscan theme I am converting my kitchen to, but I love its retro-ness. Our old trestle-style table is in the downstairs family room. The trestle part is thick pine planks and the top is two inch thick particle board with laminate top, much used the last 25 years or so that I've had it. DH's paperwork is on the kitchen table and my plants are on the family room table. Oh, and we have a little round bistro table in a corner of the family room, too (gotten free at the same place as the "new" kitchen table that matches the cute little stools I found at a yard sale a few years ago.

Yes, or at least I think it's still in the dining room. There is so much junk piled on top I can't see it anymore!! DH thinks that's where you put anything and everything that should be put away. When I finish emptying my Mother's house I plan to reclaim my dining room. Wish me luck (but at least I'm not alone.)

The only reason I ask this question is......I CAN see my dining room table top!!! =) And that is only because Tami_OH & her DH, Linda_IA are coming for supper tonight! lol

Usually, mine has the sewing machine, the cutting mat and all kinds of material on it! Seems I always have something going on in the sewing machine!

I guess we do, if you mean a table you only use when you have company. Mine has a runner and a big tulip-shaped glass container filled with wine corks (used)! :-)

Yes, we have a formal dining room. The table now holds a fall tablecloth and a pretty flower arrangement.

we dont eat in the formal dining room,we eat in the sunroom/kitchen it is
more casual. :-)

Yes,but we hardly ever use it.LOL Right now DGD has scrap booking stuff on it.She and a couple of her friends are working on scrap books.Most of the time it is just a catch all! Whatever anyone has in their hands when they walk by lands on the table.

My kitchen table is covered with a load of folded whites; shorts, panties, thongs, socks and bras. Good thing we're not embarrassed easily. LOL

Yes. Well, it's not fancy formal. It's casual styled furniture. But it's in the separate dining room and we don't eat their every day. On it is a book that needs to go in the mail tomorrow and a few papers that come home from school with the kids this week. That's it!

Yes, we have a dining room; and the formal dining table, chairs, and buffet are in there. The table, chairs, and buffet had belonged to my parents and I inherited the set when they died. The padding in the chair seats is absolutely flat now (Mama bought the set in the early- to mid-60s), and one of the arm chairs vanished into thin air during a move from southern to central California; but I can't bring myself to replace the set...

But, I digress...

On top of the table is a tablecloth, and on top of that is a round crystal platter. There are two candlesticks (on opposite sides of the platter), and there's also an unopened bottle of Grappa.

In the breakfast nook -- well, I won't even say what's on top of that table!
