Is your 'road' paved?

There is a saying that goes something like this: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

I always think of that saying when I stumble onto something I've been meaning to do---but haven't.

Someday, I intend to:

*Hem and hang the window coverings for my master bathroom.

*Clean out the closet in my office.

*Thin out the candle collection in one of the kitchen cabinets.

*Iron the handful of items in my closet that are wrinkled.

And so it goes...there are other things I can't think of right now.

What is on your "good intentions" list?

I need to clean out and paint the insides of my cupboards in the laundry room...hang a kazillion pictures,and finish unpacking the remainder of boxes left over from our move into this house in July!

Someday I intend to:

*put pull knobs on my laundry cabinets
*clean out the coat closet and throw!
*pressure wash my porch
*I also have a handful of wrinkled clothes to iron!

I think a lot of people get confused in these shared road easements and perhaps the law does vary in different localities. In my case when the 20 farm acres were developed into 4 private acreage properties, the two houses behind me and my neighbors didn't abutt the county road so straight up the middle is a 40 ft wide roadway. 20 ft on each side of the center line is legally owned by the two house landlocked behind us because the local land use laws do not allow anyone to develop housing on a property that does not abutt a road, so each of them back there has there 20 ft wide strip side by side down to the county road, making it look like a 40 ft road. Both mine and my other neighbors houses are built quite far back from the county road as well and we both have "easements" or the right to use the respective 20 ft side for only the distance from the county road up to our house/driveway no further. Now the two landlocked neighbors behind us are fighting and one of them has put up fence posts down the center line effectively creating two 20 ft wide driveways but I can still use the side I hold the easement over which is fine. I read the Easement paperwork very carefuly and had a lawyer look at it as well, the way it is written it is more favorable to me than to the neighbor who actually owns the land, he cannot do anything to that 20 ft wide strip I have rights over that would in anyway hinder my access to use it, he can't change the grade, he can't install a fence,gate, nothing, even though legally he "owns" it. The holder of the easement usually has more "rights" than the actual land owner in cases like this. Easments are usually registered to the land as well, not to the owner of the property and are registered with the state or provincial lands registery. So when you sell or he sells the paperword doesn't have to be rewritten.

jakefield - there were some cracks in the driveway that were only going to get worse. I'll be honest and say that it was all a great big want and not a need. But we wanted to redo the yard and I couldn't do that with so much concrete. They had a bunch of different kinds of aggregate and concrete on the driveway and the side of the driveway and down to the public strip next to the street. The ground was starving. We took everything out, rerouted the drainpipes under the front courtyard and into the dry creekbed. From Before/After You can see the two drainpipes on each side of the house, the go to the creekbed which is about 3 feet deep and helps keep a lot of the rainwater on the property. (I'm in northern California.) When we planted, the ground was so dead. Not even any worms when we turned the dirt. It's been amazing to see it come back to life. mariposatraicionera I'm not sure what you mean by the lower part, you mean what goes between the street and the sidewalk? If so, yes, we left that alone. Around here most people leave that part concrete unless they are in the ritzy part of town (which we're not.) haha I don't know how the costs compare to concrete. We paid about $14K but we had a TON of concrete removed from the street front and courtyard and the sideyard and the backyard.

Sounds like there is definitely an easement involved since you will have to traverse the part of the gravel road that is on someone else's property to get to the piece of land. We had a similar issue when we built, but our property was the first on the easement. None the less, there were still issues with the easement. Needing to accessing the road just because you own land that you want to get to doesn't mean you have the legal rights to you use. You need to verify your rights to use this access. I know it sounds crazy, but some land locked lots have no access unless it is given by the owners of the entire easement. It can be achieved if everyone is in agreement with the terms and once it's legally given it carries forward with the land forever. There are also can be differences between what is classified as a gravel 'driveway', even if it looks like a small road and what is actually a private road. In our area an 'C' grade gravel 'driveway' is approved for one home, two homes a 'B' grade gravel road which is wider and more substantial, anything over three houses requires a grade 'A' paved road. In some areas, unfortunately, the cost of doing this improvements if not a city or county road usually falls on the home owner of the new home, unless you can get the others to pitch in. These things can all be learned at the government office that regulates the area; it may be in the jurisdiction if it's not in the city limits. You should also verify utilities with the government office as well. Make sure to determine if the land was perked, if you will get your water from a well. If it wasn't perked, get it perked before you agree to take the land over. If the land perks you will know how many bedrooms you can build which is the measure for how much water the land can reasonable produce. I would also advise having a builder look at the land before you make final arrangements. They can give you an idea of how buildable the land is and what kinds of extra costs you may run into to change the grade, remove trees, boulders, etc.

Yep. I want to strip the wallpaper off the kitchen and paint. Won't happen until at least Nov.

One "good intention" that has crept up on us and bitten us in the butt, is to spend more time, do more, for friends that are sick. We say that all the time and the next week they're dead and we're at their funeral. I will say it happens to DH more than me. I guess men just find that visiting the sick harder to do. That's a hard "good intention" to swallow when it's too late.

I think fighting a chronic disease makes you really think about these issues and I have a long list of things that I "put off". My freezer's are so stuffed full that I have no idea what is in there and how to find any particular item. I had a fabulous garden last year and this year and it's bounty is stored in those two freezers.

Let's see what needs to be done,

-Pull the summer clothes out of the girls dressers and get out the fall things.

-go through the clothes containers and find Hayden's fall things.

- think about what crafts I want to make for Christmas presents, or if I wand to bother, most don't really care.

- put away my canning supplies and the 3 dozen quarts that are still in the kitchen.

Helping a dear friend that lost her hubby in a horrid motorcyle accident. Their birthdays are the same day and they were amrried on this day also. So sad. He was coming home from a trip with a group of friends . They were not far from home and had stopped at a light. A woman ran into them. Killed him instantly.

All my things can wait for another day.. Alot are the same that others listed.. They will get done some other day.

Actually one of those "put offs" is happening today. My DD is coming to get a Hutch out of the garage that Main Man has been storing crap in. I've got to find space for all this stuff. Move the Deep Freeze into the garage in its place.

My DD is a Teacher and is off because of IKE and she is "bored". I should be so lucky.

Whenever something I do turns out bad (like a new recipe that turns out "yuck" or if I accidently break a dish while washing them), I say "Well, my intentions were good. . ."

It's being resurfaced right now from all the use it's had!

Forget 'the list'. If I sort by priority due to fall weather now, I'd say finish painting the fence from last summer.

The rest, well...er....one thing at a time.

lol'ing...thought you were talking about the actual road...cause here in mi (burb of detroit) we actually have suburban streets that arn't paved!

my procrastion list is endless...clean, paint, repair...and here i sit on the computer...i do take meds that seem to make me tired...that's my excuse and sticking by it!

That reminds me...I also need to clean all of windows. We DO live on a dirt road, and you can't imagine all of the dust and dirt and cobwebs and dead bugs that accumulate between the window and screen. I'll add it to my list. *sigh*
