Sorry it's blurry. I had to try to downsize it and it blured.

Never have had one of these grow in our yard before. And we were surprised to find one this time of year.

Lily- Congrats! It's a beautiful house and land...and I'm so happy for you. Is that you sitting on the chair with the view? As for the yard, the good thing about patchy grass is that it will be easier to remove and replace with gardens! LOL Is the top soil very good? Sometimes a builder will just spread dirt over the area, without topsoil...and nothing wants to grow. That (hopefully) free manure could really come in handy. Definitely take your time planning! Do you still have the dogs? Where do you plan to have their area? Everywhere or only out back? That makes a difference on your design, too. I love the idea of a pergola...and a pond! Depending on the light and wind patterns, I would probably put the roses in the front and add some perennials and shrubs to give it a bit of a cottage feel...but a little more formal. That's where the grass paths can really help and give you a place to walk through the gardens and have a few benches to sit down and enjoy the fragrances! I would also put climbing roses on the pergola...you'll have a mild enough winter (normally) that they should do very well! I'm so excited for you! You have to give us updates and a lot more pictures :)

(I think) I found peonies in my yard

Peonies need sun and water when it gets dry, other then that mine went 15 years without anything other then mowed in the fall and water when it did not rain for long periods. We moved and they came with us last year in the summer.

Well thank you again everyone! I'm in Florida and mostly planted foliage that stays colorful year-round. Like I said, my house isn't grand or anything but it was a neglected foreclosure when I bought it. I still need a tree somewhat off to the side but one that will not grow so wide as to block my light in the art room. So far I haven't seen anything that I like. I will post some pictures tonight. Right now I'm doing some stepping stones in the back to mark a path so the guys who mow will stop trampling the things I have planted. Breaks over now and not much light left so gotta go.

It's a morel mushroom. The kind folks (around here anyway) go nuts hunting for in the spring after a good rain and hot weather. They only sprout out for about a week in the spring.

Did you eat it? They're really good. One of these days I'm going to the Morel Mushroom Festival in Irvine, KY. I keep having to work that weekend or something else is going on. Haven't eaten one in over 11 years now.

Kath, I was born and raised in Illinois - it's a big deal to hunt Morels - they grow prolifically in the woods near the river. Morels, rinsed briefly in salt water, rinsed in clear water, dipped in egg and cornmeal, fried in bacon grease - YUM! I haven't had Morels in THIRTY years!

Yummy! We all love them. Sometimes we find quite a lot in our yard. Always in the spring though.

Must have been damp! That is some 'shroom! When I was a kid, a whole family died from eating poison mushrooms, so I never pick any from outdoors. My mushrooms come from a grocery store or a can.

Double check it - make sure it is not a false morel. It does look like a regular morel, but I would be very careful with it.

Is it completely hollow it probably is - if not - DO NOT EAT IT!

oh they are sooo good. When we lived in Denver we had them growing wild all around where we lived. People would come onto our property to try to get them.
