Guess what......my car broke down again today.

Today was my go out to lunch day with my cousins....we had lunch at La Mesa's then went to a thrift store over in Omaha.

When I took the exit off the interstate my car was acting funny...I couldn't get it to go....my top speed was about 25 mph....I kept trying to give it some gas but it didn't do anything. The windows would not go down and the electric seats would not move. But the bell and whistles still worked and the air conditioner still worked.

I pulled into the thrift shop parking lot and shut it off...Went inside and decided to just enjoy myself with my cousins and call Denny when I was ready to leave.

When I stepped outside I stepped in a big wad of gum. Why do they spit it on the sidewalk???

Went out to my car to plug in my phone (it was out of juice)thank goodness that still worked.

I called Denny's cell phone (this was at 4:30) he didn't have it turned on....grrrrr

I called home...hoping he might be there..no answer. I called Jeff....no answer. I called my daughter Carri that lives in town...no answer. My cousins had left at my urging , telling them I would be okay.

I finally got ahold of Jeff at 20 mins. till 6:00

He had to pick up his girlfriend from work at 6:00 then they came over to where I was...but his little pick up is a two seater...and they had two of them plus a doberman in there.

When we finally got ahold of Denny and he got over there it was nearly 7:00.

At this time the car would no longer start either...

Something electrical I think...hoping something simple like a loose wire.

What a day...it was so hot out there with all that concrete.

Cross your fingers for me that I won't be without a car for a long time or that it won't be something expensive. Because if it is...I probably be sitting another winter without a car.

I am mostly a lurker here, but am so sorry for all the problems with your car. Hope it is nothing too bad and can be fixed easily and cheaply.

Wow - I’m not even sure where to start . . . I was going to try to stay above the fray but when accused of intentionally scamming or cheating a contractor - I can't resist commenting. For starters, can you just imagine what would have transpired if I’d asked the painter and the fabricator to come together to discuss who was responsible for the granite breaking? The painter, I’m certain, would have washed his hands of the whole thing the very minute it was even suggested that the granite wasn’t properly installed. And the fabricator would have insisted that he installed it properly and dare us to prove otherwise. And once both of those parties denied any culpability, we, the homeowners, would have been left with no recourse at all. The MIA standards are ambiguous at best. They provide a guideline for installation and suggest remedies in various situations, i.e. shims to mitigate cabinets that are unlevel, etc., based upon a fabricators assessment of what's needed - which is totally subjective. There are “tolerances” for everything so that a “range” of conditions is considered acceptable, which would make it nearly impossible to "prove" an improper installation based upon them. They also speak at length about “stones of lesser soundness” due to fissures, hardness of the mineral matrix (whatever that is), etc. Our friends just installed Cosmos granite and were told to NEVER stand or sit on it due to its large mineral deposits and overall fragility, although I assume it was properly installed. Someone here on Gardenweb even posted that her granite cracked because she used her crockpot on it - was that a result of improper installation? Given the nature of stone, you simply cannot say that a properly installed granite countertop cannot be damaged “except with a sledgehammer” and there’s also no way you can say, sight unseen, that our granite broke due to improper installation. We look at it as iroll said - the painter’s crew damaged it - nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t broken when they arrived and it was broken when they left so we simply cannot be made to feel guilty for holding them responsible. We also did everything we could to make sure our painter didn't have to pay any more than was necessary. When the original invoice the fabricator sent was for $2034 and included an $848 upcharge for the exotic stone, we spent half a day arguing that we'd already paid the upcharge for that slab when we originally purchased a small piece of it. They didn't agree and were adamant that the upcharge was valid, saying they'd only charged us a premium for the small piece we used, but we finally convinced them to remove it. So in essence, I guess you could say the fabricator and the painter are sharing the cost of replacing our granite - one paying $1186 and the other $848.

Glad that it wasn't a bang on the driver's door, girl! Not long after I got this car, I thought that I went into an intersection on a green ... and a car that came through three lanes hit on the driver's side ... but back at the back tire area. I was ... substantially ... very substantially ... thankful! It seemed to be the general concensus that I'd run a red light ... but I figure that he ran a yellow, as when my car had been turned around about 180 degrees - there, staring at me through the windsheld, was a green light, in the same direction that I'd been travelling ... and if I'd run a red light, it should have been red! Anyway - I also like to pick spaces in parking lots where I can drive out (but must confess to being a bit too lazy/(mis-guided?) to back into empty spaces). I hear that a bit of a longer walk is good for one's constitution? By the way ... did you say that the grandkid is wanting a car? Hhm-mm-mm-m! Hope that the rest of your weekend goes better. I, too, value my wheels ... and one needs be extra careful around here, for if one in 70s or higher is in a fender-bender or two, one is liable to get a letter from the Ministry of Transportation to say that they are cancelling one's driving permit. We have a discussion session of about an hour and a half with about a dozen others, with a test of knowledge and signs, with some being selected for a driving test, every two years after age 80. ole joyful P.S. As I was fairly sure that there were still quite a few good miles in that little 20-year-old Mazda that I'd bought only a few months earlier, after the accident I chose to repair it, at a cost larger than I'd paid for it ... partly for environmental reasons, as it costs a great deal of scarce and precious fuel to dig iron ore from the ground, smelt it, then carry it through all of the manufacturing operations ... plus add quite a lot of petroleum-based plastic, to build a new one, but repair is mainly a lot of work. Those wasps are *nasty*! If she got stung, it's no wonder she had an allergic reaction. Yipes! There are stages to allergic reactions. Some get hives then graduate to all over itching like your girl. Others just swell up. Some got into anaphylactic shock and just stop breathing and die. I would continue giving benadryl for a couple of days just to make sure she is over the reaction. Usually a steroid shot stops the problem but if the venom is still in her she could react to it again once the drugs wear off. Glad you were with her and sought vet help. Usually just benadryl isn't enough for severe reactions- they need steroids at first too. We have those wasps here too. Yuck.

gibsona, I'm glad the pig arrived in one piece. I'm also glad my friend cathy's lovely little box arrived at its destination too - she is off on vacation in CA and we'll post her bank when she gets home. She's led our local art camp for about 12 years now, so doing it with the camp tile was a perfect choice for her. I got back from Italy in the wee hours of the morning and I just dropped in to see if it got to you --- now I'm off to the post office and pick up my bank!!

My daughter's car broke down last winter. Nothing electrical worked. Not even the windows. I had it towed (free,I have AAA) and it ended up it was a broken wire and dead battery, they only charged me $50. I love my mechanics! They are two brothers, have been in business since 1974. They keep my four wrecks going! Hope yours is not too expensive. And thankfully you had company. I don't like being alone with a broken-down car.

Hope it's something simple. DS had to replace some electrical computer sending unit. He had it diagnosed at a dealership for $35 and then replaced it himself for about another $35. We have to have that done soon on the Navajo, after we get my car out of the garage. We dropped it off to get the heater fixed. Drove it 60 miles a day in sub-zero temps with NO HEAT! It is getting fixed because I won't do that again. By the way, the air conditioning works fine.

I was in all-day training yesterday when DH left a message for me to call. It seems he had a burst radiator hose and wanted to know what to do. So after work, I went and bought the hose and clamps at the parts store and then some duct tape at the hardware. I already had some anti-freeze in the trunk. (unlike DH, I travel prepared as well as can be.) DH taped up the hose, and I followed him. He pulled off the road to the mechanic's house and told me to leave my car so the heater can be fixed because his car was not leaking bad.

We got his car home and DS fixed it in a few minutes. So now I'm driving "Snot", my old car and DH's current car and he will drive the Navajo, limping and missing as it is for a few more days. I will take Snot in Saturday and getting new tires. If you remember, the last time I drove it, I had a flat tire and discovered no jack or spare and couldn't get hold of anyone to come help me. So I will make sure it doesn't happen to DH or me! I will still need to get a couple of new tires for my car before winter. Most all of our income tax refund has gone to getting vehicles up to snuff.

That's a bummer. Hope it isn't too expensive to fix. I broke down on I 95 in Connecticut one time on a Sunday afternoon. I ended up having to stay overnight in a motel because no place was open. It cost me a motel bill and $500 for a new alternator.

Hope it's something cheap and simple Patti. Been there and done that, yuck. One time, my car broke down in the drive thru lane at Burger King in the pouring rain. The guys that worked there had to come push me out of the drive thru, geesh that was embarrassing.

Hope it isn't pricey!

Fran..That was a pretty expensive fix..never heard of it being that pricey to fix an alternator.
