Warning: Pictures are very large. I did not know how to make them smaller. Please, if your computer loads slow or you just despise large pictures scroll on by. If you would like to help me in the future and teach me how to make the pictures smaller I will welcome your help so very much! I hate posting large pictures too!! If you just want to bi^t^h at me about lg. pictures PLEASE scroll on by. Thanks so much, Thistledew.

Part of 60+ dozen ears of corn, creamed, blanced and left on cob, canned in soup. Yes, I did shuck most all of the corn. Husband helped me after working 12 hr. shifts but I did not ask for much help, as I knew he was tired.

My butt ugly tomato..this is one ugly tomato, it did not get canned, too sun burned. Now I am picking them when they get a "blush" to them and place them on my pourch to ripen. Works wonderfully. My son said it looked like a baboons butt. Well, he did.....:(

Some of my concord grapes that I made jelly. These did not make the cut, but were great eating, just the same.

I could not get all of it the pic unless I showed you all of my mess but it was alot more than you are seeing that I canned. I canned relishes, chow chow, soups, tomato juice, tomato sauce, whole tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, jams, jellies, bread and butter pickles, dill pickles, and probably a few things that I cannot remember. I have frozen corn, corn and more corn, okra, squash, butter beans, peas of different kinds...my husband just planted another crop of peas to harvest before fall hits, so I will be shelling again. My children will be coming in the fall and winter to pick up their share. I have filled 3 full size freezers and one half of an upright freezer. Do not even ask me why I do this..I just love to garden and put up things for winter. I guess I am just nuts!! Oh,talking nuts.. Our pecan trees will be coming in about late Sept./Oct. so we will have those to do, but I take them to a sheller. Easy! Just pick our the pecan meat and freeze. LOL

One of our large regular tomatoes...but this is not anything next to our mammoth tomato in the next photo!

3 lbs of tomato. It pulled and broke the tomato vine it was one plus pulled over my tomato basket. I guess I did not have the tomato basket in the ground firmly enough. I Picked and left all the tomatoes of the broken vine on the pourch to ripen..green or not, and they all ripen and are now in my jars either soup, stewed or whole. :)

Lynn, Yes Bullfrogs are now part of AZ's wildlife, however that does not mean we should perpetuate the problem by transporting them to locations where they don't exist (e.g. from the river to your pond) in spite of how neat it is to see a frog in your backyard. Many people are working hard to remove Bullfrogs from various locations. ItÂs a shame to hear that their work is unknowingly becoming undone. Bullfrogs are an environmental disaster that is costing all of us in one way or another- that includes financially. Who do you think pays for the recovery of listed species like Leopard Frogs? You do, I do, we all do. Your comment "To each his own" is really inappropriate here. I certainly understand and appreciate the enjoyment that comes from your pond and creating your own mini-ecosystem. However I think we should all do so in a responsible manner. I also believe it is now illegal to transport Bullfrogs. Not only do Bullfrogs eat anything they can fit into their mouth, but they are also one of the most prolifically reproductive animals in the world. They are also amazingly mobile. A friend of mine who studied Bullfrogs has told me that in a single summer they can move up to 8 miles!! These three traits make bullfrogs a nearly indestructible predator. Please do think twice about bringing them home. I, and IÂm sure many others would dearly love to be able to visit places like the Salt River and see native aquatic species again. Agree with "hvtech42" ... I'd never go back to a top loader. The wash time may be longer, but the dry time is cut in half due to the more efficient spin cycle and my clothes are not only cleaner, but it's gentler on them. I also do less laundry with our front loader than I did with our top, because more fits and still gets clean. Based on owning the same laundry baskets then and now, I can safely say I can fit twice as many clothes in our current LG as I could our old top loader. For me a longer wash time trade off is well worth it. (Oh, and it also has a speed cycle, if you need it, which runs just 25-35 minutes.) The water savings, particularly since we live in a place where water can be pricey, is also nice, not to mention better for the world. I also don't find running an occasional clean cycle with an empty washer particularly taxing, or fussy, but those things are, I know, in the eye of the beholder. (All major appliances require some level of basic maintenance though, to keep running smoothly.) As for longevity, our original front loader, a Kenmore HEt2, lasted a decade, which was at least the equal of our previous top loader. In fact, it's still working at a friend's who took it over and did the $400 repair it needed. For us, one of the biggest benefits is that we can easily wash very large items, like our king size comforters, without fear of tearing or damage. Our old top loader did in 3-4 expensive comforters over the years, to the point we actually paid $10-$15 a time to professionally launder them which was not only expensive but a major PITA. On that qualification alone, the top loaders have paid for themselves time and again. This isn't to say that those who adore their top loaders are wrong, but I'd hardly say front loaders are a failed product either.

Or improperly watered. I've seen more jade plants suffer from too little water than too much. Adding rocks to the bottom does not improve drainage, but only serves to take up space....the rocks reduce the growing area. Your rapid drainage should come from the potting medium itself. Jades and other succulents (all plants, really) do best if watered infrequently but thoroughly. The soil volume should be allowed to dry out, but needs to be completely resaturated on watering day. Little sips encourage permanent dry pockets to form, where roots will die. A coarse textured potting medium ensures that drenching our succulents never causes the problems associated with 'overwatering'. Test for moisture levels by using your fingers to dig down and feel. You can also use a dry, wooden dowel to insert to the bottom to feel for moisture. With experience, you will be able to judge the moisture content of a container by its weight. The roots of jades are shallow. Best scenario is to plant them in a broad, shallow container, then insert the whole pot into a larger, deeper pot for stability. You are the only person who can be the judge of whether your plant has been under or over watered. You may have to unpot to check the condition. I'd evaluate your potting medium, too. I can't tell much from your image.

Summercloud - We do give the climbers some help - about once a year my DH gets on a ladder (or two) and ties up errant canes. For the largest, heaviest ones, he uses hardware which is supposed to be for hitching horses. It is a metal plate with 4 holes for screws, and then a heavy round link is suspended from that - that is heavy duty enough to hold the weight of the heaviest ones. He is a contractor, and is very careful and knowledgeable about how to attach the plates to the shingles without damaging them. The roses don't damage the shingles, but at the very top of the wall of the house where it runs into the soffit, some have tried to grow up through the roof (banksia lutea did that, and the little cane which stuck through the roof bloomed, which is how we noticed it 3 1/2 stories up!). For your shed, I agree with everything BirdsLoveRosesSoCalCoast said, except that I think you should get LOCAL advice re smaller ramblers or climbers which would work best in your climate & damp & wet conditions. California is so dry and hot in the summer that I cannot give you any specific recommendations. Just remember to find out whether the roses you may consider are once blooming (like Vielchenblau), or repeat blooming, so you are not disappointed. Your local Rose Society is a good source of info. Or, walk around your neighborhood/town, and see if you can find roses eating small sheds like yours. Jackie

Totally AWESOME! I used to can too, but without the kids, and now without a yard there is no more canning going on.

Who knows, maybe in the future I will pick it up again.

Like you, I just love to garden, and I miss it terribly.

Wow you really have been busy and obviously have a great green thumb!! I wish I knew more about canning etc. also. I am just getting into veggie gardening a little and herbs.

Oh my gosh; I'm so jealous! I wish I had inherited the desire to do that! I'd LOVE to have my shelves full of home grown stuff. I did finally make some strawberry freezer jam, but that's all I can muster up. You are lucky to have the desire and the energy and the knowledge to do all that!

I am really impressed...and envious! My mother was a little country girl and had a green thumb--I did not inherit that from her. There is nothing as good as home-canned veggies.

I remember those days! It was an exciting time when the corn was ready and the tomatoes started ripening.

Here's a link to a thread from the Photography Forum in which Mongoct gives a useful tip for resizing photos to be posted. Until I read his instructions, I didn't know you could specify the width when you insert the HTML code. The width is specified after the closing quotation mark (with a space in between). I use this tip a lot.

The other thing you can do is resize in your photo hosting program. Photobucket offers presets like 480x640, the standard dimensions for posting photos online.

I absolutely love concord grapes! I can almost taste that sweet goodness from that photo! Great looking tomatoes and corn! Our tomatoes are coming along, I have thousands of grape and cherry tomatoes on the vines and dozens of the Big Boys as well. We are eating the grape and cherry maters as they ripen....the others will probably all ripen the same week! LOL!! I wish I knew how to can.

That is freakin' awesome! And impressive! I wish I knew how to do all that. I've only ever planted some flowers, annuals at that, ha, lame I know.

I really am envious of you. I would love to have all those veges put up for the winter and not have to pay outrageous prices at the store.

oh my goodness you have me drooling over here!! What a beautiful bounty you have there. Canning is one thing I have never done, I used to help my mother and grandmother when I was young but never attempted it myself. Those tomatoes are just incredible.

The absolute easiest way to resize any picture on your pc is this very small program you can add to your pc, then when you right click on any picture you have an option to resize it and can choose from some suggested sizes or go with a custom size, your original remains the same a new smaller version will be created for you to use. There are different versions for XP and windows 7 so will give both since I do not know which you use.

What a glorious harvest that you have! That's a huge tomato ... do the extra large ones like that taste as good as the regular-sized ones?

Pictures just a tiny bit hung over the right edge ... but when I slid the slider across ... I got an ad ... so I only did it once.

Last year I took a dozen or so ears of corn to the churches on one Sunday, and figured that there'd be a great harvest the next week.

There were dozens of ears ... strewn on the ground ... with a bit chewed on each. I made the mistake of counting - 12 dozen!

Corn out in tassel, this year ... should ask the landlord if he has a gun that I can borrow to cramp the coons' syle.

Beans something of a disappointment - got a few two weeks ago, some last weekend, but noticed that there were few flowers, and not many ripening now. Last year I had large pickings for about three weeks. Maybe the lack of rain (after an overabundance in the spring) may be the main reason.

Looks like a good crop of tomatoes coming.

I may be fairly well preserved in body ... but not in the canning line ... but I freeze some beans, peas, etc.

Oh - the peas were a disappointment - planted a fairly large number, but only about a half dozen plants deigned to make an appearance.

That all looks so good, and you sure have been busy. Those yummies are going to be some real treasures, especially in the winter.

I use to do a lot of that too. I loved standing back and just looking, with pride, at all my cellar shelves full of goodies. I just hated using the "Last Jar" of any one kind!

Your kind words are appreciated, and your advice about resizing pictures was helpful as well.
The variety of tomato that is shown as the mammoth tomato is a German Johnson tomato, a heirloom type tomato. Also we grew the German Johnson Pinks Variety a heirloom tomato. Our cherry tomato variety was Sweet 100's.

There was a small difference in the flavor of the two heirloom varieties with the German Johnson variety being sweeter than the German Johnson Pink variety.

Just using HTML to resize a photo isn't going to help for people with download issues. You need to resize the photo. Download the free Irfanbiew program. Great viewer and you can easily resize photos, convert formats and much more. It'll also make the file size smaller so when people use dialup they can see the pictures too. It's been one of my "essential program" recommendations for years and years.
