I buy the seed packets from Petals from the Past by weight, empty them into a legal size mailing envelope, mix sand (play sand) with it and sprinkle. They go farther that way and are not all gone in one small sprinkling. If you are just getting a small packet, you can put them in a salt shaker if they are small seeds, e.g., poppy seeds and sprinkle them. Everyone told me to sow them in fall but I have much better luck sowing right after that plant as gone to seed in my garden and once I get a few plants established or see them in neighborhoods near me, I know when they are going to seed. It is nature's way to spread them by "going to seed" and allowing the wind to sow, so I just improvise a bit.

Thank you for the smile this morning Ronda :) It reminded me of the time we received an award from the Bright and Beautiful Foundation. Deb was too shy to accept the award at the banquet. She asked me to go up to the podium and let her stay at the table. All the ladies in the audience loved it when I told them Deb did most of the work and I got the praise. Even the men had knowing smiles on their faces when I said that. Deb and I just had a nice trip down memory lane when I read the post to her. She is sitting at the other computer and says hi. She just brought the plaque in. I thought that was about 5 years ago.... Deb was right. It was back in 2000. Doesn't seem that long ago.

The only clematis seeds we have grown are ones from our plants. It takes a long time to grow to a mature plant from seed. I have no idea how packages of seed will do. Sorry about that.

We were laughing and talking here and I got sidetracked. Never mind about the clematis seed comment. Don't know how I got to clematis from alyssum....

Our Costco has loads of 2-pack roses, including Austins. The price was 17.99. I did not buy any as I have enough, thank you very much.

Peachie: The roses are budded on one graft. By two-in-one I meant that two roses from one base.

Do some shopping for me too! I'm striving for that very same affect, the D&D affect. What I would like to do next is find a giant pot and have a little fountain. I don't know if Dave has the fountain affect so we could be first. In the future on my wish list, a small pond. Now I'm sure D&D don't have that! But, sigh, their roses are beautimus!

I must admit this while we were in Reno yesterday I also purchased Alyssum Seeds. I'm actually going to try them in my perennial bed first though. If it goes well I will put them in the new rose bed next year. Dave and Deb have started a GardenWeb tribe all their own:)

Yesterday we visited nurseries in Reno, NV which is the closest metropolitan area for us. Forgot all about Walmart! Still kind of early here though for the garden centers though. But based on your information Ronda I will bear that in mind next time.

I already have my alyssum seeds purchased so I can copy Double-D. I have an 8-sided raised 4' bed that my hubby Steve built a few years back to hide the septic pipes and I had filled with black dirt, and then planted roses in it and all around. Thought this would be a great place to sow the alyssum seeds.

Ronda - went to Wally World here in Illinois and they have bags of bulbs, clematis, hostas, etc. but no grafted roses yet. Those sound really cool. I must have one! None of my neighbors are gardeners, so having 2 different grafted roses on one plant would totally freak them out!

Thanks you guys :) If you only knew how many years it took Deb to convince me that alyssum wouldn't damage my precious roses. I didn't want anything else growing around the roses. She led the ol' hoss to water but he wouldn't drink, not for a long time anyway. She would slowly add some seeds in new spots each year. I finally realized that alyssum was a benficial companion in many ways. Gotta admit, I really like the way it looks now :)

Ok, would someone please link me to Digger Dave's rose pics? I'm curious and very anxious to learn!! lol

Alyssum, be forewarned will peter out in the heat of the south but it is pretty for early spring and then it catches its breath and rejuvenates in the fall. It will self-sow, so just no worry about buying seed once you get it established, like California poppy, larkspur and verbena, it's a winner and a renewer.

I guess I'll admit here that I bought some alyssum seeds too. Actually, four different kinds - one of which was a mix without a picture. I've got more than four spots for it as I'm planning on trying it out in several different areas.

Oh, and my husband just laughs at me if I suggest going anywhere to find bareroot roses. I think it might be the snow on the ground, or the number of roses I've already ordered this year. But he was very nice about seed shopping and even bought a kneeling pad for himself.

Sigh - I envy my more southern and western sisters and brothers, at least where I live, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. don't have much out yet. But. For us space and price challenged, I was delighted to find a Suncast resin storage box 22" x 22" - snaps together in minutes - at Walmart for ~30$. I own the Suncast vertical shed - these ARE resin, but, they are holding up great and keep the water out! Good stuff for the price! Also there is some organic gardening soil with 3 months of natural fertilizer for $5 a bag - this is some of the best soil I have ever seen, already has perlite - I never pot straight from the bag without amendments but I was able to with this stuff. And one cheap Queen Elizabeth bagged rose, for a problem spot that needs a nice tall bush. I'll be heading back to get some more soil, and any interesting roses.......
