I got this email today, and wanted to share.

I know some of you own GUNS but this is something to think about...---

If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil

plans for you. Did you know this? I didn't. I never really thought of it

before. I guess I can get rid of the baseball bat.

Wasp Spray - A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk

area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob

them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police

department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she

get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a

lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too

close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds

an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a

can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from

people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at

home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be of

use.

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in

Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High

School . For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet

spray near your door or bed.

Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than

mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if

someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says "spray the culprit in

the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades.

It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for

protection, Glinka says look to the spray. "That's going to give you a

to call the police; maybe get out." Maybe even save a life.

will! Good to know, huh? It will also kill a wasp!

I sit on my front porch, nitely, for a ciggie
Have an air freshener in my hand, so as not to bother neighbors,, trying to be considerate, BUT

HAVE ANOTHER REASON: In case someone unknown approaches, I keep the freshener in my hand with finger on the spray button, to use if needed.

Feel safe where I live, but you never know.

I have heard that about the wasp spray.It sprays a stream rather than the wider spray the air freshner would put out.
Sorry Glenda,but a non smoker can smell the ciggie aroma over that air freshner.LOL But it's considerate of you to at least try to cover it up.

Should I have to ask the contractor to take the capacitor & start kit back or is this something he should suggest himself? I guess I have a bit of a trust issue as he has never suggested replacing the worn out compressor; just jumped in suggesting a new system. I don't even know what a new compressor should cost. We have another contractor coming out this afternoon to give us an estimate but as my husband works out of town during the week & I'll have to deal with this, I am trying to learn what I can so I can know what questions to ask & whether or not what I'm being told is legit. Any help is greatly appreciated!

24" sink cabinet - Good idea? Bad idea?

Lots of useful points here, thanks. After doing some measuring, we would up tentatively deciding that we'll put in a 36" sink cabinet. We'd have so little room in a 24" cab around a garbage disposal (assuming same model we have now, and assuming the drain is in the center) that we'd be hard pressed to store trash under the sink. So with a 24" cabinet, we'd probably wind up losing 15" somewhere else to making a dedicated trash pull out. Thus it's actually efficient to just go to the 36" sink base. (The 30" doesn't work as well as 24 and 36 sizes, for various reasons involving window placement and ikea sizing.) If we stay with this decision, it seems we'll have a lot of latitude in selecting a sink size / configuration. I'll almost certainly go ahead and move to a larger sink - the question will be whether to maximize the potential of the large cabinet or keep the sink scaled to down a bit since the kitchen is smallish and the window in front of which the sink will be set is just 30". With the current cabinet choices open to me, my main work areas in the kitchen will be 33" to the right of the sink cabinet base, and 54-61" on the left of it. Plus however much smaller the sink opening is than the 36" span of the base cabinet. A little more prep space is always a good thing, but so is making dirty mixing bowls disappear.

Yes, you can build a nice little working greenhouse from old windows. We did a 10x16 one about 15 years ago and I am still using it. Here it is in it's original configeration...All windows were wood framed salvage material. We cleaned them up, removed all old hardware. The roof windows are old double glazed, french doors. They were tempered glass. The side windows were old single glaze, storm windows. The north side did not have many windows and all solid walls were insulated. There is an automatic roof vent and a small exhaust fan on a thermostat. It is wired for electricity but I use a 50 gallon barrel filled from a hose as my water supply. I used to keep it modestly heated in the winter and covered it with a clear solar pool cover for those months.Because most of the windows were already 100 years old and the french doors were never meant to be roofing material, after a dozen years there began to be some rot. We did a major renovation of the south side roof and front wall. I found 2 used commercial skylights for $25 and bought some used modern vinyl windows from a salvage yard...a couple of them open and have screens. The building is still very useful as a greenhouse and also retains heat better now.

anglo, I'm the family tech support department. My kids are grown and out of the house now, but over the years, I've "supported" Macs, iphones, ipods and the ipad. Supporting involves using them when necessary to resolve problems. I was the one who needed to set up network (not just wifi) connections to a Windows system when a kid wanted to transfer school files to the family backup system. It was nearly impossible and much too hard. I debugged update problems, user problems, other hardware and software issues. I'm also in Silicon Valley and have a closer exposure to Apple and things and people in the Apple world than people elsewhere might have. Apple makes excellent hardware and software but I would call it on a par with its competitors on other platforms, not superior to. What they do excel at is creating marketing excitement and buzz, and passing out Kool-Aid to users to make them think they are in a special place when they use Apple products and convince them their products are worth premium prices. I have nothing against Apple products and I admire the company for what it's done to get to where it is. Personally, I think their products are overrated. I really dislike the inflexibility of their stuff compared to what can be done in the PC and Android worlds and I'm happy to not have to use any of it on a regular basis. Apple customers are maybe the happiest customers I can think of (considering other consumer products) and for that, both they and the company get what they want. I'm completely understanding of that. But it's not for me. PS - I have two grand-kids under 5, both of whom use iPads from time to time. The units are in padded, bunker-like protective cases. Both were told - you have to be gentle with these. If you break it by dropping or throwing it, it will be gone and never fixed. There have been no problems.

You might want to check this out a little further. The ingredients in Wasp spray have not been tested nor approved for use on humans. It may be more harmful physically, but less effective as a deterrant on an intruder than you think. It's illegal to use any spray BUT pepper spray in many jurisdictions for self-defense. In other words, you could be putting yourself at risk of a serious charge--that may be less important than saving your life and property, but still it's something to think about.

Perhaps even more importantly--by forwarding and posting these kinds of messages, they reach not only the innocent people they're intended to help, but the criminal element who then turns around and uses them to commit crimes. Let's not give the criminals any more weapons than they alreqady have (and yes, there are reports of criminals using wasp spray on their victims).

Just look at the whole picture here, check to see what is and is not legal in your jurisdiction, what does and does not work-- before you make any decisions.

I was going to say everything Azalea did.

Plus, pepper spray will shoot up to 20-40 feet so there is no worry about needing the assailant to get close before using it. I took a self defense course where we shot pepper spray and the stream does shoot far.

Keeping a can of wasp spray on your desk or next to your bed only gives an assailant another choice of weapon to use on you just like keeping a gun out in the open would.

The tidbit at the end of the email advising wasp spray to kill a snake or mouse should alert one to the fact that it has the potential to kill or maim a human. It is a nerve poison and can cripple one for life if used improperly. Most jurisdictions do not allow for deadly force to be used to protect one's property. Something to consider. It may not be "fair" but that is the law in most places and you don't want to end up in jail.

Ignore the nay-sayers! If you don't want to use a gun (they have been tested and proven effective against humans) use any other thing you choose, breaking and entering gives you the right to protect yourself. If you choose to use pepper spray use the "Bear Strength" blend.

I have the air freshener for protection as well :o)

Just give the bad guy a squirt in the face. Might work

If I am being attacked I want to have something that WORKS not something that might work. Rape, murder and other vile physical assaults are not part of my have a great life agenda.
I can't hit the broad side of a big ole wasp with that spray the accuracy isn't good close or at a distance. I had accidentally gotten the spray in one eye. It burned a lot for a few minutes but didn't blind me. I used milk and sterile water to wash out my eye, soap and water to wash my face. I did take the precaution and go to the Doc-in-the-box walk-in clinic to get it checked out. I drove myself and the Doc said I did right with my own flushes and gave me a sample tube of an eye ointment to sooth the irritation.

I have mace and pepper spray as a deterrent in the purse and on a key chain. I have taken and taught self defense classes and can deter/hurt/hurt bad/kill a very large person without weapons and know when each would be necessary. On my own, when I am worried about my safety and security I still prefer the .38 S&W. This is usually when I travel at night in an unfamiliar place or through a disreputable part of town. These are things I try to avoid and will not take chances if there is any other option.

I appreciate that blogs like this one are sharing proactive safety ideas. ThatÂs a good thing. However, there is an issue with WASP spray for self defense. It's a MYTH! Also, WASP spraysÂ labels state, "ItÂs a violation of federal law to use in any manner inconsistent with this label. Never Use Indoors!" Police departments worldwide use pepper spray because the inflammatory effects of this agent work on those which cannot feel pain (very important). The inflammatory effects of pepper spray cause eyes to close involuntarily and produce a loss of breath sensation. Pepper spray has been proven effective on deterring and incapacitating aggressive, combative, intoxicated and drug induced individuals for over 20 years.
To date, no human testing has been conducted on WASP spray and itÂs a violation of federal law to use in self defense. There are many home defense pepper spray options which will deploy up to 25 feet and unlike WASP sprays, these pepper sprays do not require the user to be as accurate because their spray pattern will cover an entire doorway. It's not a good idea to use WASP spray for home protection since it is against the law and WASP spray labels themselves state "NEVER USE INDOORS". Pepper spray is a safe, proven option which is trusted and relied upon by police officers worldwide.

Snopes has it listed as a "mixture", I guess that means some good and some bad.

If you are trained to use a gun, it is a good defense for you. Most people would just end up getting killed by their own gun.

Wanted to add, my Mom kept a shotgun in her bedroom for years. She was getting rid of Dad's guns after he died and my brother in law told her to keep the shotgun, but not the shells. He said just the noise of cocking it would scare off any would be threats and seeing it would also.

Back to an old suggestion someone sent me. Keep your car keys near you so you can sound your car alarm. That might avert an intruder. Then I'd have a pepper spray handy with a 9 Iron Golf Club. LOL!

... etc. ...

... had better work on the first go-round.

Or they can make a mess of you, if the intruder gets to you.
