Saw lights... we must have new neighbors

10 years ago or so, a boy down the street from us murdered his mother. I believe he was 16 at the time, and his girlfriend, his accomplice, was only 14.

He came home, asked his mother for money and she refused. An argument insued and he grabbed a sword off the wall and really hacked her up. Obviously this was a drug issue.

The house has set empty all these years, but just a couple years ago someone began maintaining the yard. We thought someone was going to move in then but never did. Several nights ago, GS and I noticed lights on. Tonight, more lights and I noticed furniture in the carport. I don't think I could move into that house. It was a horrible story and shocking to our neighborhood.

That is a dilemma. I'm not sure what I would do. I imagine with the house's history, the price may be right. But it really is a creepy thought of moving into a house where such awful things happened. Anyways, if someone has moved in, I hope they are good neighbors and you=all get to be friends.

hi pirate girl, you're a nice person and my quarrel is not with you. in fact, i don't have a quarrel at all. i'm just pointing out the obvious. if you read the thread again, nmgirl was just responding to norma's original question in a thoughtful, cheerful and enlightened way. thick skinned or not, she does not deserved to be treated that way. i reread her posts several times and found NOTHING offensive or argumentative in any way. she actually she gave one of the best responses. it was in-depth and informative. regardless of whether there was intent, people's feelings can still be hurt by others'rude behaviour so long as it can reasonably be perceived as rude. and while i am not a "personal friend" of nmgirl and don't know how she really feels, i think she would be absolutely justified to feel hurt. and along that line, i am NOT a "personal friend" of norma's, however, i have met her in person and will only say that my original post is not based solely on this thread. and as an aquaintance of nmgirl, we could do without being called (unjustifiably) thin-skinned. Basically I hear that if there is No Fault of such flood, if it ever happened, and if there is no way they can prove negligence on our side, then we are not to pay, but I'm just not clear how does this work. The insurance company has to prove that we did this. We were recently informed that there has been depositions by everybody (property manager, maintenance person) but nobody has approached us for one. Aren't we supposed to get our side of the story under consideration? How do they know where did the water come from? I know gravity is a factor but, couldn't this be a case of a lady opening a hose in her apartment and looking for reason to get remodeling at somebody else's expense, right? She claims that she had been on vacation for 2 weeks. How can they take her word without confirming if we have any water stains, mold or mildew in our unit? Well, if there was a flood, I'm sure there would be at least traces of such problem in our walls and swollen plywood in our cabinets. Right now it's only us against All State Insurance, as we (and I hate to say this) stu/*&^y didn't have insurance. We live in Miami, Florida. Does anyone knows anything that give us some light on how to approach this? Yes, we are know looking for an attorney so we can respond to this but so far the fee for a good lawyer is $3500 +$300 per hour. We are going to suffer no matter what... Please help!!!!

natal, can you post a photo or link of your foot-operated trash/recycle cabs, muspic, can I see your cork floor? We're doing cork as well. The telling sign for me was when I went into a "wood flooring" showroom. When I asked where their cork display was (the whole floor was covered in the different wood flooring), I expected them to say they didn't have one (like most stores). Instead, they took me to the area where the employees stood all day. All cork. No wood. Enough said. Alabamamommy, our current house has white Corian counters. They were here when we bought the house and were afraid of them at first, but now we love them. I cook every day and never had any problem getting anything off them, including red white and tumeric. I spilled about 4 t. of tumeric on the counter when I was making keema yesterday. I got most of it right away. After I was done cooking, I saw that I missed a spot. I sprayed the spot with 409, let it sit a few minutes while I cleaned up then came back and it came right off. We've also had success with set stains using Soft Scrub, and even a baking soda paste. For the kitchen in the house we're building, my must haves were: * cork floors (I need the sound proofing for living with a brain injury and active boy!) * walk in pantry (that it is 9'x9'11" is a bonus) * all base drawers * wide aisles * pulls instead of knobs * dropped baking center so I don't have to stand on my tippy toes while kneading bread, and open on two sides so my son can help. * foot pulls for trash * hands free water faucet * island (I ended up with two. WIth my TBI, I can't go out to socialize much, so two islands give me a "little kitchen" where I can focus and not be distracted (aka, burn the house down). The second island allows others to be "in the kitchen" to help prep, socialize, clean up, etc. without being in my space. I can't wait! *desk area for printing recipes, menu planning, etc. * side by side frig. It just works best for the way we live. Funny story, when we bought our current frig, the deciding factor was the one that fix a pizza box. In the last four years, there have been less than 5 pizza boxes in there! We cut out most processed foods. So we love the side-by-side because when I cook dinner, I always make larger portions so we can get 2-4 leftovers out of it. There are packaged in lunch size containers in frozen. Everything is easy to see in the morning, when DH grabs his lunch. * Full size freezer in pantry. We currently have a chest freezer, but we'd like to be able to buy a part of a cow from a local farm, so we're getting a side by side freezer to store our meat and extra bulk goods. DH's must have, beyond what's above: * deep single sink for washing pans (Usually I clean up as I go, but often I run out of steam by the time dinner is done, so he'll do clean up. I figured if I give him the sink he wants, he'll do it even more!) * energy star appliances * water sense sinks * Sharp microwave...

We have a good sized field between us and them. Plus we are back further off the road then they are. We have our garden in the field between us. . We plan on asking them if they would like sharing the garden space. We have plenty of space. We have lived here 45 years. The people that lived there before started with the grandparents, then the daughter's family and after both of them passing their 3 kids inherited it. One daughter bought out the other two. They lived there 4 year and lost it. So sad. All of them were great neighbors, too. We have always tried to be good neighbors. We are glad to see someone finally in there. We have had so many people there day and night. They have stripped the house.

My initial response to the title was going to be "I'd kill for new neighbors".....didn't know your post would be a gruesome one!! How awful. Is the son in prison for life? How very sad!!

I hope you get some nice neighbors!!

I'm not a superstitious person or anything, but I just don't think I could live in a place where a violent event like that had occurred. I think I would rip it down and start fresh if the funds were available. I, too, hope you get some good neighbors.

What a horrible thing to have happened. Were there any other family members? Do you think it sold or that it stayed in the family?
I know if many states murders, even regular deaths have to be disclosed, but there may be a time period. Sylvia probably could tell us.
Hopefully your new neighbors will change that house to a happy home, despite the history.

In CA deaths or murders had to be disclosed for 3 years. When my neighbor in my 4 plex there shot himself and rotted for 5 days in August heat, his apartment was redecorated and rented out after a rent reduction. The new tenant, a woman, became a good friend of mine. She said it didn't bother her to move in, since she didn't know him.
In another neighborhood where I lived in CA, a father shot his teen aged son while he slept and then shot himself after calling 911. A few months later that house was for sale and they had an open house. The real estate person told me they were hoping a couple without children at home would buy it. I wouldn't have wanted to live there.

after i read your post went to check on one of the infamous houses, the manson murder house...they ended up tearing down the original home and rebuilt, but had a awful time selling that one...think it finally sold...

there are people who will buy or collect the oddest things, no matter who or what happen.., in this current housing crisis, if the price is right, they will eventually buy....

lets just hope the neighbors don't remind the buyers of what happen..maybe the house can be rejuvinated, and not be an eyesore to the neighborhood...

Regardless of price, I could not live in a house that has an energy like that.

juellie - the son was sentenced to 35 years... the girl got 27. I just looked them up online and she has 49 infractions in prison, ranging from selling/misuse of medications to unauthorized leave. How do you get unathorized leave in prison?? The son has 10 infractions and they're basically the same sort of problems.

susan - I seem to remember that about the manson house now that you bring it up.

gardenspice - I'm not sure what happened to the rest of the family. The daughter was married and the father was a truckdriver. Have never heard anything about them. I caught a glimpse of the man (new neighbor) and at first I wondered if it was the father. If so, he has gotten quite grey but it did sort of look like him. But, I can't imagine someone would come back like that.

Isn't it sage and salt (or salt water....) that cleanses the aura?

That would be creepy, not sure I could live there....

Keep us posted. Maybe after ten years the husband came back...that poor man.
It sure sounds like the jury was rightfully horrified, given the 27 year sentence for a 14 year old accomplice. Can you imagine getting out of prison at 41 or 42, having never been out in the world as an adult? That's a story in itself.
