Since I don't use any of that stuff, I don't care! I think good soap and water is all we need, otherwise they have just sold the public another Bill of Goods, like bottled water.

But..... Big BUT!

People do not use soap & water to the extent that they will use the hand sanitizer. I was in the hospital recently with a loved one & they had the hand sanitizer in each pt room. The nurses & dr's were VERY good about using it. Much, MUCH more than they would ever have washed their hands.

I see hand san. in restaurants & appreciate it's availability.
It's really handy in many places or situations for little tots to use in place of soap & water.

Conversely, I am sure that some people do not realize that you really DO need to wash your hands periodically, ALSO.

I work in restaurants and using barrier skin shields is very common. One of the bad things about washing your hands constantly is getting small open cuts on the hands that allow bacteria and viruses to enter freely. I am sure this is a problem in hospitals too.

The skin shields are suppose to form a barrier to keep the germs from customers out of the small cuts. Handling utensils and glassware that people have had in their mouths, and handled with their unwashed hands is risky.

It is impossible to wash your hands after touching something EVERY SINGLE time. The disinfectant pumps serve a good purpose to use constantly and resort to handwashing when you KNOW your hands are probably contaminated. Picking up and clearing a customer's cloth dinner napkin is probably the worse thing for transferring germs, worse than handling a used plate. When one has to go quickly from clearing a table, to setting a fresh table, the disinfectant pump is a good solution.

I heard on our local news tonight that some teachers are adding disinfectant hand wipes and/or Purell type products to their list of supplies parents are to get for their kids to take to school.

I agree with Sue. Soap and water and I also use a little bleach when needed.

The theory of washing hands is good enough is all well and good, but I don't have a sink in my car to wash my hands when I go through a drive thru and have yet to see a drive thru with a drive up sink and soap dispenser! Nor do I always have a sink when I'm on some job sites and want to have lunch. And frankly, have you looked in the restrooms of some restaurants????

It serves a purpose, like a cell phone. But neither should be taking over your life!

I carry hand wipes for emergencies. At least they also remove some of the grime or dirt instead of just mixing with it. I never understood the hand sanitizer thing. I also don't understand people who constantly apply hand lotion without washing their hands first. There's an ICK factor in that practice to me.

Several years ago, DD was constantly getting sick at work. She was shaking hands with clients all day long and catching everything. So then she stopped shaking hands and would explain that she had a cold, even when she was well. Finally, she invested in hand sanitizer and then the firm bought some for all their employees to use at their desks. Made a big difference. Before that she considered quitting a job she liked just to stay well.

I just returned from Oahu and The Big Island. Most of the hotels in Waikiki and Kona have motion sensored hand sanitizer dispensers located throughout their hotels. I saw alot of people using them, me included.

I keep a bottle in my purse and use it all the time.
