DH's Hummingbird pics.......before they leave...

The migration is starting....the rufus males have left at my house. They are feeding heavily and more adults will be movin on....the utube video is NOT @ my house....but you can see and hear the swarms.

I was going to ask if anyone still had a lot of hummingbirds. I've got 3 large feeders out and am going through about 2 gallons of sugar water (5 lbs. of sugar.. I make it strong) a week. We only get the ruby-throated here in Missouri and they'll be heading south soon.

pm2: Mine is an 8 oz one from Wild Birds Unlimited. It's identical to humzinger in every way, even made for them by humzinger. They have a retail store near me and their feeder was a few $ cheaper than the brand name Humzinger. 8 oz is plenty for me because my birds will not allow more than one to feed at a time. I make nectar in larger portions and store in covered jar in the fridge. Only takes a minute for me to clean, refill, and rehang. Again, easy to clean and can even go into the dishwasher. I just use any old soap or spray cleaner. Someone above mentioned no soap but the manufacturer makes no such recommendation and I don't see how soap could be a problem as long as it's rinsed well. Hi everyone, Just had to pop in and make sure our hostess knew I finally sent the box to Becky (ramazz) and I sent lots o' goodies along w/ the plants too :) Becky sent me a lovely box a few weeks ago absolutely full to the brim of plants and a GORGEOUS copperwired butterfly windchime.. I collect these so this was a lovely bonus! So thanks Becky :) Just wanted to sorta apologize too for not being too 'chatty' this RR, as some of you know my mom has cancer. Well she has been getting weaker and weaker the past few weeks so I find myself at her house daily doing whatever needs to be done or just holding her hand.. We found out on Tuesday that her liver is now 80% covered with cancer and she is literally a bright yellow color (like a jaundiced baby..) She is growing a new tumor in her belly (she just had 2 removed in March that weighed over 12lbs all together..) and the cancer is spreading to her interior stomach lining and up to her lungs.. We got her to a cancer center in Mexico this past week that does things a lil bit differently than they do here in the U.S. They focus more on herbal healing, and positive thinking. There's no guarantees of course, but since her oncologist basically wrote her off, this was her last hope. Please keep her in your prayers, her name is Janice. All this cancer started initially as cervical cancer.. so all you gals go get your yearly screenings.. this is NOT something to play around with! :( I'll probably be away more than here on GW for awhile, just wanted you all to know I appreciate your kind words and thoughts and I'll pop back in when I can. hmm. maybe you're right. We could go two shades darker than Quiet Moments, the exact match, which would be Mount Saint Anne. I love that color as well and that might satisfy DH. ;-) There is texture in the quilt, the stripes in the sheets. I could add texture with accessories. I was thinking of doing mercury glass or some sort of silver table lamps on the end tables. The problem is the walls slant in, so I can't hang art on any of the 3 outside walls. The walls add interest though - here is the master bedroom with 1 coat of paint to give an idea Only the straight wall can have anything hanging, and it will likely be a mirror over the dresser. There is hefty woodwork around the dormers and a high baseboard to add interest. But they are white.

I would strongly recommend AGAINST buying ANY CounterBalance product... they will completely hose the homeowner / DYI consumer. Just compare the price for the brackets between http://counterbalanceshop.com and http://www.chemical-concepts.com/counterbalance.php The same product will cost you $114 at the first site and $81 at the second. Really??? THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME VENDOR. I tried to place an order based upon the info on the Chemical site (didn't even know about the counterbalance site) and they wouldn't honor the price posted. Don't do business with this vendor who isn't interested in doing business with you. Vendor's words: "I could care less about" selling to consumers. STAY AWAY !!! Find a local machine shop who is interested in doing business at a fair price/profit. The product is a VERY simple job for any machine shop to produce. Chemical concepts doesn't even make the product -- they sell glue. For the person who wanted to know where they could get metal support bars, here is an option: http://metalworking.mscdirect.com/CGI/MWSRCH?N=32003649 I don't have any experience with them, so I don't know if their prices/policies are good or bad. I just found them from doing a bit of searching.

Wow, the pictures are amazing, so close up and clear ! Thank you for posting these, I LOVE hummingbirds, what really amazes me is to watch them in a 60 mile an hour wind storm, still hanging out at the feeders ! HOW do they do that and how do they survive when it gets so cold, their little bodies look so fragile !

Gorgeous Hummers.We only have the rufus here,or at least that is all I have seen.I have noticed the last few days they are feeding more.I'm not sure when they leave but I hate to see them go.We enjoy watching them.The twins love to watch them at the feeder in front of the big picture window.When one flies up Rowdy will pat his chest and say,"Me,Me." He thinks they came just to see him.LOL If the babies are standing at the window sometimes the hummers will get really close and hover like they are looking at them.

I seem to have a lot more hummingbirds this week. I guess they're gathering in a group before leaving. It's certainly been happy and buzzing around here. Today I had a female and an obviously just-fledged (newly flighted) chick at the feeders.

When I lived on the base I was going through two gallons of nectar a week, too. I'd make one gallon on Sunday, and one on Wednesday. I had dedicated jugs in the fridge just for the hummers' syrup. Having a back-up supply in the fridge meant I could quickly clean and re-fill the feeders daily and keep everything fresh.

I see hummers all the time here, and sometime five or six at a time, but they're using only two to three quarts of nectar a week now.

I can hear a ruby-throated hummer outside my window this minute as I type. It's still a bit dark, so I'm not sure if it's a male or female, but it's hungry and I'm glad I filled the feeder again yesterday. No competition at the feeder right now, many others must have already headed south. Thanks for the beautiful pics, Nicole!

Hubby and I loved the pictures your hubby took. We also enjoyed the video. We keep two feeders going, one in the front yard and one in the back, but we only get two or three little hummers at each. We too hate to see them leave.

I'm in central Florida and I just saw my first one of the season last Sat. Don't know if its the same one but there has been one here every morning about 7:30 each day since and I just took my first pictures a couple minutes ago. This one is an adult male Ruby.

Last winter I had several Rubys, a juvie female Rufous and a Black chinned. Unusal for this area to have 3 types. All stayed from Jan. till April. Had a bander come twice and they banded 2 of the Rubys and the Rufous. Am in hopes the Rufous will return. I do believe that one of the Rubys had been here the year before as he claimed this one feeder as his and always sat on the same branch of the Crape Myrtle tree as the one the year before did.
