Northerner I had a similar problem one year in my vegetable plot. In it I had buried lots of compost directly into the soil Kitchen scraps, which I over the year, had just dug a little hole into the bed, here and there, threw in the kitchen waste (no meat of course) and then covered with soil. But it was said that I had a fungus in the soil. Don't know if it was the compost put in directly or something else But I concluded that this is where the fungus came from. I forget what I sprinkled over the bed, and left it unused the next summer. After which it was fine. It is terrific having all this time in the garden I bought more hydrangeas the prices are so terrific just now. Found Endless summer 'blushing bride" and "Bits of Lace" then Lemon Daddy . All had been quite expensive and I had looked at them earlier in the year. But now where 60% off. COuldn't resist I watered them in well after digging large holes. Then put lots of leaves on top and a cardboard box over each of them. boxes that had had, apples in them so where quite strong. I planted them all temporarily in my vegetable patch, as the soil was nicely prepared and the bed open. In spring or summer or even fall, I will decide where to move them to and will know if the have survived or not Nice to spread poppy seeds around. Looks nice next season I have taken to spreading a heavy layer of fallen leaves over all my beds. This is the second year for doing so. The beds are all new that I have created in the last two years. I brought in good garden soil but I thought the layers of leaves would enrich it further. Un expected benefits last year, in the some Calla lilies I had not got dug up, survived. Roses seemed to love the cover as did the Hydrangeas. Everything came up a little slower, as the plants had to work through the leaves. This year I was going to chop the leaves up before applying them to the beds, but didn't get it done. Just threw them, out of the bags, (which I had collected from neigbhours) right onto the beds.

It does tend to get icky in there if you don't take it out and clean it, sometimes the minerals from the water create a residue and some parts of the ice maker can start to rust and leave rust stains and some old ice cubes that have sat there for a long time get icky. I take mine out and put in my sink and wash it with hot water and dish wash detergent then dry it out and put back in. I had the GE repair man here yesterday about mine. I have not had my fridge very long. I started finding chunks of clear plastic shards, very pointed and sharp, in my glass of drink. I could not see it at al because it was clear so luckily for me I only drink with a straw I did not swallow any and get stuck in my throat and die!! But it could happen easily and if a child got one it could really be damaging. The repair man was blown away he had never seen anything like that happen. I told him this was a very serious design flaw and they needed to correct it immediately because someone was going to end up suing GE. He told me I would have had every right to from what I had experienced, and I was right it was going to happen. What the problem is that in the ice maker there is what they call a worm screw which is the length of the ice bin and it turns and has like a fin that is spiraled around the rod that pushes the ice from the back to the front and into the door shoot. That fin is made of clear plastic and it is apparently not strong enough and broke in to pieces when it encountered clumps of ice cubes and the plastic just came out with the ice. I had no idea till I went to pour out my water and clank something hit in my sink, it was a chunk of plastic about the size of a business card. then more and more of them kept coming out. While he was here he found a huge chunk of it stuck up in the grinder that makes the crushed ice, it had been grinding on that piece of plastic so much it had cut grooves all in the plastic and I am sure all those shards went out with the ice and I probably did swallow those. The man was just astounded. He was taking notes and said he was going to present this to the design team immediately so it could get immediate attention. He was really freaked out he said I am just imagining you here alone take a drink, a chunk of that gets stuck in your throat you can not call for help, I said yep and my husband finds me dead. He was sweating! It really is a scary thing. IF they leave it plastic it needs to be a much stronger plastic and for heavens sake color it some bright color that can be seen in the ice or in a drink! I think it should be stainless steel so it can hold up and not rust. so he ordered me an entire new one to be put in. He said till then just reach in for your ice cubes, I said well that is what I have been doing! So while washing you might just check on yours and see if it has plastic parts like that and make sure everything is intact! I told him GE could reward me for being so honest with a new dishwasher or stove either one would be fine LOL

I agree, we have had our Bunn for about 10 yrs and it still makes a good cup of coffee. We even put it away because our son bought us a Keurig and it broke after a year. Brought our Bunn back out. We didn't like the taste of the Keruig coffee either.
