Purple Martins almost ready to fledge! 3 pics

If I calculated correctly, the young Purple Martins should begin to fledge today. The nestlings are very content, fat, and happy in their warm/dry gourds with Ma and Pa feeding them as much as they can hold from dawn until dark.

Still, this might be fledging day for the two older birds so I'm keeping a close watch and open ears on the little colony. There's a three-day age span in the five chicks, so fledging could be a drawn out affair.

These pictures were taken Monday evening, Aug. 4. It's 7 p.m. and no one has left the gourd yet. Perhaps tomorrow!

I was standing on a lawn chair (I know; "Safety First!") near the pole to get these photos.

Papa Martin was not happy and wouldn't take the dragonfly to the chicks until I got off the chair and backed up about eight feet. Then he was happy and continued feeding.

One dragonfly, and three chicks gapping at the entry hole. What's a papa to do? Catch more bugs...fast, of course!

Feeeed Meeeeeee! NOW
