Time to plan on baking cookies or Chex Mix to mail off to the dorm. My daughter loved Chex Mix, so I just used a box of Crispex and that way did not have all the left over cereal to get stale. I always added extra nuts to add to the protein.

Some NLD/AS adults have been able to achieve a level of personal and professional success in various jobs including teaching, writing, even sales. AS adults are often drawn to a career that relates to their own areas of special interest, and may become proficient. Thus childhood fascinations may form a basis for an adult career. With the right supports and accommodations, adults with AS / NLD can be successful, contributing citizens and employees. Some of the brightest individuals with AS or NLD represent a unique resource for society, having the single mindedness and consuming interest to advance our knowledge in many scientific disciplines. Many of these will never seek diagnosis; since their differences do not cause insurmountable problems at work or in relationships, they simply accept their idiosyncrasies. Gillberg estimates 30-50% of all Aspergers' go undiagnosed (Gillberg, 2002), and the same is probably true of NLDers'. Often, successful adults became aware of their condition only after having children similarly afflicted. In many cases, however, adults with NLD / AS have several college degrees, yet are unable to find or keep work that matches their strengths and abilities. The reason for this is the disparity between a high verbal and a relatively lower performance IQ score of NLDers and ASers. While verbal IQ is most indicative of academic achievement, performance IQ points to the ability to achieve success at work. Thus, though they attain high levels of education and skill, they may fail to hold down a job and earn a living. A high percent are either unemployed or underemployed. Just 12% of Asperger Adults are in full time employment, and only 3% live independently (Barnard et.al., 2001). There is no current data on the employment of individuals with NLD, but almost half of those I know with the disorder are unemployed, and many others underemployed. It's appalling that so many who are educated, articulate, skilled, honest and hard-working remain chronically unemployed. Because of their high degree of functionality and their naivet those with NLD / AS are often viewed as eccentric or odd. Subtle differences cause difficulty in social interactions and workplace relationships. For example, their inability to read nonverbal signals makes interpersonal communication a challenge. Their rigid style and peculiar perspective exacerbate the problems. Because the AS/NLD employee has trouble with eye contact, he can be perceived as inattentive, evasive, or rude. Difficulty with modulating volume and tone of voice can make him appear angry. Problems with understanding body language, social cues, or even facial expressions makes it hard to know what is expected and often leads to misunderstandings. Until he's verbally told, he may not be aware whether the boss is happy with his work or is disapproving. At that point, it is usually too late." Merry Heart, We got down to 34 degrees last night, and had frost forming right about 3 a.m. and I DIDN'T cover up my plants. I wanted to, but the wind gusted hard all day and there was no way I could have gotten those big sheets of plastic out and over the plants. The plastic would have blown away before I could use something to tie it down. When the skies started clearing late in the afternoon, I knew we were in trouble. And, when the wind stopped blowing after sunset, I knew we were in deep trouble. I went outside at 3:30 a.m. and turned on the sprinkler, hoping to give my plants a chance of surviving what was rapidly becoming a very hard frost. I moved the sprinkler once an hour. I just checked on my tomato plants, and they seem fine. I'm not so sure about the beans and corn. They don't seem as fine, but I'll wait a few hours longer to see if they either perk up....or look worse. And, if you don't find Espoma anywhere in Ardmore, let me know. My DH will be picking up some for me one day after work this week, probably on Fri. or Sat., and he could pick up some for you at the same time. Once it is here at my house, we will figure out how to get it from me to you. You can come here, or I can come to Ardmore, or whatever. I know Carla would pick up some and ship it, but you and I are within easy driving distance of each other, and there's no need for y'all to spend money on shipping. Ilene, I used Epsom salts for a couple of years. I really couldn't see much difference in my tomato plants, but it made a HUGE difference in my pepper plants. The plants were large and green and lush. I didn't get as many peppers as usual those 2 years, though, and I haven't tried it since. I'm not sure why it didn't seem as helpful to the tomato plants as to the peppers. And I don't know if the Epsom salts had anything to do with the decreased pepper production or if it was just a bad year for peppers. Ilene, I've posted a link to Reinhard Kraft's website. He has photos of over 800 heirloom tomatoes in his photo gallery. Many of the ones he grows are the same ones we grow here in the USA. He has been active in promoting heirlooms for a long time, and has sent seed to gardening friends in the USA for trial and vice versa. And, y'all, we have just too much wildlife around here. When I was out during the night putting the sprinkler on the garden, there were raccoons on the porch (nothing there for them to eat, but that didn't stop them from looking), rabbits in the semi-tall grass along the fence line between our place and the neighbor's place, and coyotes.....at least one on our place near the barn, and one on the neighbor's place between their house and ours. The coyotes were howling back and forth. I know coyotes seldom attack humans, but it made me a little bit nervous. Hoping to work in the garden this afternoon after it warms up! I'm here now. Had lunch with some friends and then had the little GD all afternoon. DS is flying off for work the afternoon of the 4th, so they don't want to do anything. Guess DH and I will just do our own thing--if it is too hot, we might slip off to an afternoon movie and then watch the fireworks from the yard. We can usually see the ones from the baseball stadium (actually went there last year to watch) and from the college. Haven't heard of any celebrations this weekend, but then I wasn't looking for any. And I am not in a resort type area like you are Kathleen--all that would be over at the beach or around Disneyland and the other amusement parks. Karen, I sure would not want to be out in the heat either--you can stay in the air conditioned house and be comfortable. Kay

Lol! She's pretty nutty Ceph! It's great that BF sticks up for himself, you, and A___ though. Sweeby is right in the fact that he sounds like a gem. He may not be A___'s real father, but he's his dad. That's fantastic and he should be proud. Keep your chin up lady! Find humor in the situation. Lord knows it's needed.

Two years, he's going to Jacksonville State, taking his basics.

He's leaning towards wildlife management.

Trying out for the baseball team in September.

My best wishes to your grandson on his new adventure and to you too. I know that you will miss him being around from time to time. I have 2 grand daughters off to their first year in college. Their grand father is having a real hard time with his girls going off on their own.

No doubt he'll make that BB team with his history! Based on his love for his gramma, he seems to be a gentle soul, perfect for that field of study. That little doll on the rocks grew into a handsome young man!

Glenda, I love your adoration of Parke, Jr. I have a young person in my extended family that I feel the same about. They can do no wrong, even when they do wrong! Haha!

Parke, Jr. has certainly grown from an adorable little boy into a fine, handsome young man. And I know he adores his grandmother.

It's amazing we have been around the KT since 1998! Now our toddlers are moving away and many of them have families of their own. My middle daughter,Michele (right), is off to University of Omaha this month and I'm going to miss her tons.
I have a feeling Parke is going to love college.
