Creative Brainstorming needed! (Halloween costume)

I can't believe I'm already thinking of a costume already but it'll be here before I know it.

I have my idea all ready-now HOW to do it! I have been all over the internet searching for a lightweight, styrofoam or plastic barrel. It has to be open at both ends & big enough to get my size 10 body inside and rest on my shoulders.

I will cut out armholes in the barrel & many other smaller holes all over the barrel. I have most of the costume parts located-mask, hands & feet...it's a MONKEY!! I will be sticking all kinds of stuffed monkeys hanging out of the holes in the barrel as well as up around the head opening. I plan on getting a bunch of plastic bananas to place on my head. I will be carrying a sign that says" I'm More Fun Than A Barrel of Monkeys!!!"

OK-that's the plan...any ideas how to make the barrel form or where to buy one like I need? Not the rain barrel shape-the one that loks like a wine barrel.

All ideas appreciated!

What about one of those Pfisker pop-up garden waste barrels that you put grass clippings in? I bought mine at Target relatively inexpensively. The only alteration you would need to make is to cut out the bottom. Mine is green, so you might have to spray paint it an appropriate color as well.

Hmmm..never saw one of these but Target is right across the street. I will certainly scoot over there tomorrow & check it out. THANK YOU for the idea. Color is no problem-as you said-it can be painted. I have one of those brayers (sp?) to make it look like wood too! Can't wait to see what it looks like...again-many thanks!

Kirk - Birdhouses are my summer/spare time adventure - I teach too - Horizon MS - CVSD. We probably do not live far from you - Chattaroy. There's a fairly active hand full of insulator collectors in our area. A fellow here in Spokane used to have 300,000 in his backyard! No #%&@! He was selling them for $.25 each when I found out about him, then $.05, then free. They were mainly from old phone lines between Spokane & Ritzville that they put underground. He had worked for the phone company. The insulators got to be a liability for him (20' x 30' waist deep bin in his backyard which recycling outfits would not take). I ended up with at least 3,000 and my neighbor was one of the ones who took his remainder (he has 50,000). I don't think I'll be running out of them any time soon! Back to birdhouses.... they're fun to make. We get lots of birds along the Little Spokane R. I'm trying to have a bunch made for the Inland Craft Warnings show in Nov. It'll be their 25th anniversary so it should be a good show. Terrene, it's not difficult to mix up seeds and labeling of seeds, especially when you are a newbie at it. I've done it myself, a couple of times, and just lucky that I caught my errors before it was too late. All you need to do is make such mistakes as labeling a bunch of seed envelopes with one kind of seed, then do another set of seed packets to back up and put them aside. Then you get the seeds to put in them and OOPS, wrong seeds in wrong envie Another way it can happen is again, a newbie, or even an "oldie" like myself. in a trade you get some extras added in, labeled by either the person you traded with, or they got them from another trade and passed them on to you. Either way, none of you are familiar with the plant they came from, what the seeds look like and you just keep passing them along, assuming that they are labeled correctly. Somewhere along the line in the travels of those seeds, someone keeps the packet that has been passed along and WS them. Then it's found that they where not what they where labeled. I've had it happen several times in the 8 years I've been on GW and trading. It's a surprise to see what they are, and I've yet to find something I was not happy with for at least that season. As for non viable seeds from trades. I guess I've been lucky with that one, as I've had that happen only once, and they where commercial seeds that I got in the trade. On the other hand, it's not uncommon to have commercially purchased seeds not germinate, not germinate well, or bloom the colors they are supposed to be. Commercial seeds are grown the same way as in our own gardens, open pollinated. It is always a chance that some commercial seeds will not bloom the color that they are supposed to bloom, or be a throw back to a cross at some point. That's why commercial seeds usually will be warrantied and replaced in not what they where supposed to be. I'll stick with the seed trades and take my chances. I'm not that particular as to whether they bloom what they are labeled or not. There are very few seeds that I "must have" and those few I do purchase, and my nursery purchases are extremely limited as well. Thanks everyone for all the fun ideas. For a while there I was considering having DH be a king and I'd be a court jester. But, the party is on a Fri. night, which makes prep a little more tricky, decided to keep things simple also since we're hosts... so we are going to be the Skipper (DH) and Gilligan (me) from Gilligan's Island.

The best costume I ever had was last October for FSD's carnival, I was Marie Antoinette's head on a plate. All it cost was a wig, a plastic serving tray (looked like silver) and a plastic tablecloth. First we cut out one side of a large box we had, leaving 5 sides in tact; then we cut out a horseshoe shape in the top of the box and glued the tablecloth around it and slightly over it; then we cut a horseshoe shape out of the plate and glued it to the top of the box. I put TONS of makeup over my white grease makeup so I looked very made-up, but had a bluish-grayish tint to my skin, painted a mole above my lip and put on the wig I had bought (from a Marie Antoinette costume set). I sat a stool inside the box and placed my head all the way in the circular part of the plate and box. FDH put a feather boa around my neck so no one could see where my neck met the plate. It was so hillarious! I'd close my eyes and the girls would come all the way up and start poking me in the face to see if I was real. I would open my eyes and they would almost pee their pants! I even scared most of the adults! The best thing about it is that it wasn't gory at all. No blood. Very tasteful. And I just wore a t-shirt and jeans since no one could see the rest of my body.

What's the difference between a rain barrel and a wine barrel? I looked them up and they look the same to me. DH built himself a wooden barrel for a halloween costume one year. Back in the good old days when we were young. LOL Good luck with your costume and have fun!

We got some large white barrels from a friend who is in the cleaning business. Maybe check a janitorial supply store??

Gymboree has a crawl thru lightweight,flexible tube that might work for you. You could cover it in fabric of your choosing.

I thought it'd be hard to top last years oven costume, but sounds like you are right up there with it. You have the best ideas! No ideas on the barrel just wanted you to know I admire your brain ;-)

OMG! OMG! OMG! That is Exactly what I'm looking for..a zillion thanks! I got this idea while up in PA this past 3 weeks at my sons. My 6 yr old DGD has a little game called Barrel of Monkeys that we were playing & the 'light bulb went on'. Wouldn't you know another "Pennsyltuckian" came to my rescue. I've gotta quick order it before it's gone. Thanks!

Not counting on a prize winner this year (allbeit, this would be my 6th 1st place win with Ernie in 6 yrs and the 8th for me-I won first for 2 yrs prior to the E-man.) but Ernie had leg surgery last year & it just about did him in, by night's end. It'll seem funny not to have a 'partner in crime' this year.
I've about exhausted all ideas anyhoo! I have pics(can email them to anyone interested in seeing them), of all of the prize winners.except the year I was a cave woman dragging a life sized cave man by a rope,which I made..tee hee-every now & then, I'd whack the man w/a club. On my back was a sign that said "I love Clubbin'!"
Barb..a rain barrel is cylindrical-a keg barrel is widest in the middle & tapers towards each end.

dlhealedquilter..went to Target & will make that thing work if I can't get the barrel online that Paula linked me too. Thanks!

i was going to suggest something similiar to the above link...a barrel made out of fabric w/ boning you'd use for a bodice sewn in to make the vertical shape and the rims at the top & bottom. w/ a fabric body it would be easier to cut holes where ever you wanted. ~ liz
