Well, that's sad. So many think they have to resort to drugs to kleep up ~~ with their hectic schedule, the 'crowd', whatever.

That is very sad. I can't imagine snorting anything up my nose--I hate having to use prescription nasal spray for allergies. Yuck.

I read the bill and did some research on the current law. IMO, all this bill would do, if passed, is take a lot of things that are already contained in current law but are being enforced by a hodgepodge of agencies and instead give a new agency responsibility for enforcing the laws aimed at protecting consumers. The current legislative authority for the USDA and the FDA already contains most, if not all of this language - YOUR GOVERNMENT ALREADY HAS THIS POWER. The concern, and the backstory behind legislation like this, is those agencies aren't doing enough to protect us because they are beholden to their "industry partners" - big businesses that guarantee that the regulations are easy for them to deal with while being difficult for small farmers to deal with, so they can push their small farmer competitors out of business. As I read it, all this bill does is take the current laws regarding food safety and put them in the hands of an agency whose mandate is to protect consumers - someone we can go to if salmonella creeps into the egg supply to ask "what on earth happened?" Does this law have the potential to shut down small organic farmser? Sure. So does the current law of the land. Ask any organic farmer. The red-tape requirements are insane at this point. And if your neighbor the chicken farmer is making a living without bothering with that, that's great for him, but he's violating the current law just as much as he would violate this law, if passed. This really isn't bigger government than we already have. It's just government that isn't controlled by multinationals. Will it be corrupted by multinational corporate lobbyists? Probably. But I repeat: your government already has this authority. The only substantive change is it puts that authority into the hands of an agency with a mandate to protect consumers. That is not the mandate of the USDA or the FDA at this point. And Ricky, all the best thoughts heading your way.

Eh, I'm still not going to 'judge' SM on drinking if the binge was at SD's house yet. I don't drink at all and I think that whole event would have tempted me to want to hide in a bottle (or under a rock, behind a shed, heck anywhere but where I was) Dad's not getting off the hook here. What was dad thinking with bringing soon to be SM to SD's home for a vacation/visit on the anniversary of Mum's death, take daughter to a shopping center and announce after he had told his daughter he would not be getting remarried 'hey, guess what, honey, ______and I decided we're getting married'. Geez, why not just hit 'er with a bus. Some tack, Dad. Considering OP was already having major problems with having dad with a girlfriend, I can just imagine how OP reacted right then and there and continued on through out the 'holiday'. Evening ended up with soon to be SM tilting the bottle heavy and mumbling 'but we're lonely' , I certainly would wager there was a whole lot of emotional activity inbetween announcement and binge. Second binge we hear about is when OP arrives at her parents old home where dad and SM now live which has gone through lots of redos', had no pictures out of OP mother and a SD/SM 'war' already in force. I have a hunch something was left out of the retelling of this little setting too. I already stated a drinking problem if it is indeed a real problem should be case for concern, but the majority of the ranting issues OP pointed out and squealed about in her very lengthy post had nothing to do with drinking. The drinking is a small part of what has OP all fired up and angry.

Oh I never expected that the paramedics would clean up, didn't say that, it was just a little strange to tell her she had a big mess to clean up. The neighbors were trying to get over there and would have done it before leaving it for her. But they wouldn't let anyone in even after the crime scene people were done and gone. It would be nice if someone involved could provide information for the family and friends to help with the clean up in these kinds of situations. Even a flyer or print out with information. When my sisters husband did it in their house, the police would not let her go back in, she was at work when it happened and returned home to find him, and they called a team to clean up. I guess it's handled differently in different areas. We have a major hospital less than a mile from here a trauma center. I don't know why he wasn't taken there instead of the helicopter landing in the road. So much she doesn't understand and no one was telling her anything. In fact they had told her the wrong hospital they were taking him to. It's such a stressful situation for everyone involved. I am sure there were reasons, I hope she can get some answers. Until faced with it I doubt anyone knows how to deal with it. Today she seems to be doing a lot better. She is talking to people and was actually walking around the front yard. She is moving in the right direction.

Just to be clear I already said that I see the most potential for trouble with my daughter who was away for school, not because of her or anything about her personality or behavior, but simply because of the relative freedom she has. But I was also saying that, unlike other schools, they have (and enforce) a policy where you get expelled the first time; no second chances. And given how hard the kids work to get in, it serves as an effective (not foolproof) deterrent. I wasn't implying that good students don't do drugs; in fact esp among boys I would think the arrogance and invincibility that some of the star students have might make them over-confident about their ability to handle it? Two points above I really liked. One, do not trust them. I totally agree. I was a really good kid and a relative square but even I could not be trusted, lied about where I was sleeping, hid booze and ...etc.. Teens cannot be trusted, and that is why the plaintive "don't you trust me" (add puppy eyed look) doesn't phase me in the least. The other point above that is so true is that sharing honest experiences about raising teens is so helpful, but maybe because so much of parenting today is seen as a competition, people are just not very forthcoming. I do like the idea of a parenting youngs adults thread!

My DH said that Billy had lost a lot of weight when he saw him on TV, guess now we know why. It's very sad that people get sucked into using drugs like that. Wish we could learn from other people's mistakes instead of always having to make our own.

Cocaine's effect on the brain is such that many become addicted after the very first use, especially if it is smoked.

Don't know why, but that made me feel sad too.

I read that he did, indeed, have heart disease, and
the coke was the worse thing he could do.

I feel bad that his family now has to deal with this
all over the news, too.

When my DH told me about this, the first thing I thought was the writers from SNL are going to use this as a gag for sure. He was soooo hyper, and now we know why.

What a waste! I personally couldn't watch him but millions did and to mess up his life like that, terrible....

I wonder if the fact that he was on narcotic pain pills for his hip pain( he was facing his 3rd hip replacement in 18 months) skewered the tests?

I'll never understand why humans can not learn from other's mistakes. It is well known how bad and addictive these drugs are, still there are those that try them with the notion,,,not me. The same for cigarettes. I'll never understand how any one will "try" them knowing there are millions and millions of smokers trying and dying to quit. Humans are a strange breed. Dottie

Here I go being insensitive again, but I have trouble getting upset over a few dope addicts dying. Just because they have money doesn't excuse them from common sense use.

This stuff really bugs me. A good hardworking friend died a few weeks ago after battling lung cancer. She worked 3 jobs to help her family and parents who had big problems I won't go into. She had reasons to become a doper but didn't. She was 54 when she died but didn't have to load up on coke, meth or anything.

Now I got word that one of my few GOOD cousins was diagnosed with brain cancer a week ago. He's had a degenerating spine and joints to deal with for nearly 20 years. You wanna talk about pain? The pain that man goes through is unbelievable. But he still works however and whenever he can and along with his wife make a living. If anyone has reason to drug up, they do. Maybe the issue is when you become famous you automatically forfeit your brain.

Call me whatever you want but until I see people sympathizing for the drunk under the bridge drinking him/herself to death I can't shed a tear for "celebrities" to drug themselfs to death, hang themselves masturbating or OD on steroids to impress themselves standing in front of a mirror. I look at it more as natural selection weeding out the terminally stupid. The only sympathy I have is for the families and friends who get injured, cheated or robbed by them. Mixing cocaine, booze and painkillers. Uh, "say goodnight Gracie!" Sheesh. I guess they'd have been dead long before if it took intelligence to breathe. And maybe that's too bad.

Another example of how unfair life is. No, I think I'll save my sympathy for hardworking people who get a raw deal out of life and work to overcome their problems. Not the spoiled who are so insecure they have to seek out chemical ways to justify their being. And to the ones who suggest their doping is solely from pain, I'll submit that broke people have pain too. That's life. Oh wait, that's not life for some of them anymore is it??? You don't snort OxiClean folks, you put it in your washer!

Too bad, he always seemed so "up" and excited about the products he was advertising, now we hear he was a cokaine user. Sad!

Thank You, Dear Cynic.....I've been saying this for a long time, about so-called celebs who do themselves in with 'stuff'. I feel not an ounce of sympathy for them. and maybe some for their families, but then if they didn't care about their families, why should I. I know some will think I'm hard hearted, but at the age of 73, I 've seen many people go through many difficulties, both health-wise and economical-wise, who buck up and take care of business with out doping themselves up. Just my opinion. Dottie
