Took a tumble at WalMart & could not get up :o(

Lady down on isle 7, need help!

That was ME!

Slipped on a wet spot, down I went on my left hip, and left leg went under the cart!

And I could not get up!

Two nice customers were right there with me, fanning me, until I recovered enough to be helped onto the electric cart they sent for me to ride.

Great friend and her DH came, she drove me to doctor, for x-rays. Doc said I'm going to be hurting for a few days, take it easy for 6 weeks. But NO BROKEN HIP.

Sitting on a bag of frozen English peas!

Oh me, oh my, this has not been a good day.

What a bummer glenda! Not a great way to start a holiday weekend! Good thing there were nice people to help you.
The same thing happened to my girlfriend in east Texas. Walmart was kind enough to pay her bills and then some.

Hello everyone! I'm definitely NOT a fan of Wal-Mart, although I can appreciate the reasons why people shop there. Wal-Mart has extremely low prices, but I am absolutely NOT convinvced their products are of good quality. One of the few things I bought was a garden-hose-spray-nozzle for .99 which broke within a few days. At a yard sale, I got 2 used garden-hose-spray-nozzles for $1 each, which have held up faithfully. 4 years ago, My mom bought a kids' mountain bike for her grandson. What a piece of crap that was. Crappy enough to make a kid not want to ride a bike. Yes, it was very inexpensive, but who cares, if its just junk? I bought my mountain bike on local-ebay, 2nd hand, for a lot less than what it'd cost new. Walmart clothes: decent, but Target is far better. I'm lucky to live in a metropolitan area, where thrift stores are chock-full of good clothes. Nobody does a better job of being thrifty than me: I'm enthusiastic about buying things 2nd hand, at thrift stores, auctions, on craigslist.org, in the local paper, etc. I get a lot of great things, used. Where I live, anything I need can be found for a good price at smaller stores (...every store is smaller than Walmart). And if paying a little more means supporting a smaller and/or local store, I will do so. Smaller stores sometimes have great sales! I believe in supporting small/smaller businesses, because I believe they are healthy for our economy, from which everyone benefits. I wrote a letter to the mayor of Oregon City, thanking her for saying "no" to a Walmart store being built here. (She wrote me back!) Another point: Don't buy anything just because it's dirt cheap. Garbage service costs, and the landfills have enough junk already. How much useless crap could a household possibly need?

When one WalMart is bad, do not blame all of the stores. Period! I work at a WalMart store in Oklahoma and its currently the largest Supercenter store in the state. Yes, thats right, I work in the Pets department overnight. This is a really tough decision on my work hours. I like working at nights, because it pays more, but I want to work during the day, because I want to be around more customers to teach them more about fishes. I stock the Pets department, but I do assist customers with fishes. Its a real challenge, because of right now, I am basically deaf without the use of my hearing aid and all my life, I've been wearing my hearing aid and was able to hear great as other people can, but there is a problem right now in my ear, so its tough. I can speak to people very clearly and I try to read their lips and when neccessary, I have them to write down on paper. All stores that sells fish are bound to have a dead fish here and there... thats perfectly normal. One night, this customer was an idiot, actually very rude somewhat. He wanted the entire tank of a specific fish that cost 5, 10, or 15 cents each (cant remember at the moment), so I went ahead to net out all of the fishes, but let one fish in the tank, because it had some kind of fungus. I told him that the one fish is bad. I went ahead to prepare the fishes into the bag and while I was doing that, he went ahead and netted the sick fish out and I tried to tell him, but he wouldnt listen and he put the sick fish in the bag. I went ahead to tie up the bag and note the price and amount of fishes, but I did not add the sick fish to the total price. While I was doing that, he went ahead to net up 4 dollars worth of goldfishes that costs 15 cents each and I told him that I will do that. He wouldnt listen and by the time he was finished, I prepared the fishes into the bag and then he went and got some more and put it in the bag. I tried to count the fishes in total and estimated it to be 50 fishes, which came to about $7.50. He wouldnt listen to me and he wanted things his way. There was this one night, I spent nearly an hour educating a lady on fishes and tank care. She ended up on picking two fancy goldfish and the alage eater that sticks to the tank glass. After everything was done, about an hour or so later, when I walked by the fish tanks, I noticed two bags in the sink. I was shocked, she changed her mind at the checkout. Made me furious. Its alot of stress a fishes to net them out and bag them. Another night, this guy wanted several fishes, which was divided up into two bags. After all was done, he came back about 15 minutes later, saying the prices on the bags came off, so I wrote it on the bags again. Later that night, my coworker brought the two bags back and dumped the fishes back into the tank. What is wrong with these customers?! Anywayz, I still work there and I still enjoy educating people on fishes and tank care. Just because there is a lazy associate at a store, the entire company should not be blamed. Its very simple to talk with the store manager about whatever. PetsMart is a good place and they have much more selections. WalMart is good, but not enough selections. Petsmart is generally more expensive but there are some fishes here and there thats cheaper than WalMart. There are PetCo stores in this state, but I have no clue where they are. I've seen commericals, but they failed to show the locations of the stores. So, I have no clue about PetCo. Anywayz, all of these stores sell good and healthy fishes with top technology fish tanks. It all comes down to the services of each associates for each stores.

Ezzirah, It isn't right but the stores do it and they always have to some extent in the last couple of decades, although I think it has been much worse the last 5 or 10 years than it used to be. Gardeners often are impulse buyers---getting excited and all ready to start the season too early, buying plants or seeds merely because of outrageous claims that cannot be verified and that sound too good to be true, buying herbicides, fertilizers or pesticides that promise dream results, etc. Retailers take advantage of that. As gardeners, it is our responsibility to ignore the hype and to educate ourselves before we spend money on plants, seed and products. Last year I saw 6-packs of sugar snap peas (fresh shipments, not old ones) on the shelves at some local stores in late May and early June. How many new, unsuspecting gardeners bought them and took them home only to have the heat and disease kill the cool-season plants 2 or 3 weeks after they were purchased when the warm-season was well under way? It is just as wrong for the stores to sell cool-season plants in latest spring or early summer as it is for them to sell cool-season plants a month, 2 or 3 before their correct planting time. Will it ever change? Only if educated gardeners stop buying the plants too early, having them freeze and then replacing them. (That's a win-win situation for the stores 'cause they sell twice as many plants.) Stores are going to give gardeners what they want, and if people are requesting warm-season plants in January and February, the commercial growers and the retail stores are going to do their best to fulfill those requests because they know if they don't have the plants people want when they want them, those people will take their business elsewhere. That is just how things are now, and unfortunately it puts nursery growers in an awkward position where they are growing and selling plants too early, even though they know better. Back in the olden days when I was a kid in the 1960s, you didn't even have to know what to plant when because the nurseries didn't get the plants in too early. So, if you walked into a store and saw onion plants or bundles of cabbage plants (they were young plants sold in bare root bundles that you had to take home and plant right away), etc., you knew it was time to buy them, take them home and plant them. The local stores wouldn't have tomato plants in the stores until maybe a week or 10-days before your local recommended planting times. It made it easy for inexperienced gardeners to learn the order in which plants went into the ground since it wasn't possible to buy plants too early, plant them too early and lose them to frost. Nowadays, in the stores, pretty much anything goes, and that can cost inexperienced gardeners a lot of money. Also back in the olden days of the 1960s through as late as the 1980s, most plants bought in stores were very small. My dad used to buy tomato plants in little pots that were maybe 1.5" x 1.5" in the 1960s and 1970s and when I started buying tomato plants on my own in the 1980s, they were available in either small six-packs or 2" x 2" pots. The larger plants in 3", 4" or even 5" or 6" pots slowly became available beginning in the 1990s. Now, in the 2000s, people can walk into stores and, if they are willing to spend $20.00 or more, they can buy tomato plants in 3 to 5 gallon pots in about May and those plants will be in full bloom and have half-grown fruit on them. I'm thinking that people willing to pay that much for one tomato plant will be eating some mightly expensive home-grown tomatoes! Retail has turned into a very regimented, calendar-oriented industry that puts product of all kinds in stores well before we should be buying them. Who needs to buy a bathing suit in January or kids pool toys in February? Do we really need to buy Easter candy the day after Valentine's Day? How about school supplies being in stores around the Fourth of July? Christmas decorations in September? I hate the way the stores rush the seasons in all areas, not just in gardening. Dawn

Ditto on Joan's comment about the Shingle's vaccination. I'm surprised they have you on heat instead of ice, but regardless, I'd ask if it is OK to take an OC anti-inflammatory - like Advil or Alleve. You may not get much progress for a couple of weeks, so practice patience on this one. Since you are active with water aerobics, you are in a better situation for healing than someone who is sedentary. Can someone other than DS bring you supplies? Best thoughts!

Sorry to hear you fell, but am soooo glad it's nothing serious. Please follow the Drs. orders. (I used to always keep a bag of frozen peas to use as an ice bag. Then I started freezing bread crumbs in a FoodSaver type bag...I liked that better.)

I'm sorry to hear you fell, but glad that nothing is broken.

Falls are so easy to happen. Have you ever had one of those "How to fall safely" instructions? I can't imagine ever having time to react in a way to "help" a fall.

My DH slipped and fell in a local Starbucks. He tripped over a carpet runner near the door. We got our coffees for free that day, and we got a coupon for anything on the menu free on a future visit. The manager, a woman. was very pleasant. Luckily nothing broken or bruised except his pride. Hope you feel better soon, Glenda.

I slipped down in Kroger's and the same thing happened. I couldn't get up. People wanted to help me up, but I have a bad knee and it doesn't bend very well and I was trying to get my legs under myself. I wasn't hurt....but every time I fall, and I do slip down often here at home, I worry that it will be my hip.

Glad you didn't break a bone.

Well, Glenda, did the manager come? They have to write it up and report it. As it was a wet floor, they have to pay your medical bills and any expense you incur related to the injury.
If they made no offer, I'd call the store manager and ask what they were going to do about it. You should not have any expense as it is considered negligence on their part.

Nothing quite like lying on your back in a public place with people looking down at ya' is there?

You really need take super care of yourself- take plenty of time to allow that ligament to heal. (Ask me how I know.)

And Lynn is right- WalMart is obligated to pay everything assciated with your fall...you should not have to pay one cent of the costs- whatever they may be.

You were very lucky. Did a manager of Walmart say anything, or offer you anything?? It sounds like you could definately bring a lawsuit up against them for negligence. Not to sound like I go around thinking people should sue, but they should at least pay for any medical bills you may have now, or down the line. JMHO.
