I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I was diagnosed in my late 20's with no family history etc. Actually they misdiagnosed me as a type 2 and the endocronologist I first saw went along with that even though I weighed 110 lbs and was 5'7". Not exactly your typical fit for a type2 and he should have done more looking into my issues. It is likely your daughter was misdiagnosed during her pregnancy and like me she still had some functioning pancreas that allowed her to control things with meds/eating right. It can vary how long it takes the pancreas to stop producing insulin. For me it was over several years. For others it can be much shorter. Her pregnancy probably helped in diagnosing things at an earlier stage vs. her going into ketoacidosis. A very lucky thing imo. I switchd insurance and finally got a good endocronologist who said there is a blood test to check for specific antibodies and if positive you for sure have type1 diabetes and if negative - you could still have type1 it is just inconclusive. Mine was positive. She did the test because I didn't fit the typical type2 criteria. I wish the first endocrinologist had done this to save me lots of aggrevation. I went on the pump shortly after that and has used it for more than 10 years now. She also said it was likely caused by a virus and my immune system started attacking itself. Anyways as others said a good Endocrinologist is very important. Somebody who is up on latest technology and recommended treatment methods is important too. BTW the pump is awesome as far as eating goes. You don't have to necessarily be on a diet other than like any normal person you should eat good and healthy, but if you want to have a few extra cookies - no big deal. You also don't have to eat on a schedule. The only thing you have to be good about is checking your bloodsugar often. I find that a small price to pay vs. having to stick to the old way of treating diabetes which never worked for me as I couldn't feel a low coming on and would pass out as I wanted to have tight control.

I too have dawn effect, it is a real difficult thing to try to deal with, I do the snack before bed but that does not help the only way I can avoid dawn effect is to get up at like 2 or 3 am and have a snack! Then my morning fasting number will be in the normal range. That is not going to happen though. But luckily my number even though out of norm range is not crazy high. Insurance will usually pay for as many test strips and lancets you need to do your testing as long as the doctor writes the script to cover testing that often. Mine does. And I also always use what ever brand meter and supplies my insurance tells me is their preferred brand so that it will be cheaper, and every one of the major meter companies have a program you can sign up for where they send you a prescription card to use when getting your supplies that will knock the co-pay cost down even more. I do at times have to remind the pharmacy I have that card on file so they give me my extra discount. We recently changed insurance again through my husbands work and they had a different preferred brand so they sent me a letter with the info to get the new free meter and supplies for their preferred brand. I have never paid for a meter and have quite a few now. I really do like the one I have now, it has all the test strips in a barrel container that is inside the meter so no more handling test strips at all just push the button and it sticks out the bottom of the meter and the lancet is also attached to the meter, makes it very very easy to use for me with my arthritis hands. I have been on Metformin for several years there are several things that you can do to prevent the side effects. Only take it with a meal and always supplement your B vitamins especially the B-12. This will prevent most of the stomach issues. Metformin strips the body of B-12. I don't know why some doctors do not inform the patients of this and put them on a supplement from day one. Any time I hear someone say they are on Metformin and suffering the stomach issues I suggest going immediately and getting B-12 supplements preferably the liquid B-12. I take it daily, I find it at CVS and Walgreens. My doctor checks my vitamin levels every 3 months when he does my blood work. It should really be required wish it was so many would then know what is happening. My doc will also on occasion give me the B-12 shots. The liquid B-12 I take is not the under the tongue type it is in a bottle that has a little cup on top (like pepto bismol has) you take one little cup full daily. It tastes good actually. CVS Liquid B-12 1000 mcg CVS Liquid B-12 1000 mcg the one at walgreens looks pretty much the same but has the walgreens name. I think one of the most important things for anyone that is newly diagnosed with any type of diabetes is to go to a diabetes education facility and go through the classes. The doctor can write a prescription for the education and insurance will pay for it. The knowledge you get is so valuable and you get to keep all the notebooks and literature for reference. Most will also call and follow up with you for some time after the education to make sure you are doing ok and answer any questions plus you can also call them should you need to. Extremely valuable!

Is she breast feeding?...keep that in mind when you cook....cabbaggey things, chocolate and other things often disagree with baby. But they will tell you....just don't make too much of any one thing until you know.
