Most things like that I try and if it is a battle I wait awhile and try again. I don't make a big issue of it. I had boys and one day the oldest one just followed his male cousins into the bathroom and did what they did. It's hard to show a girl what to do. LOL

I am so thrilled that you and your Hubs can experience this first. I just don't think there is anything cuter than a baby who just learned to walk. As for the potty training, sorry it has been too many years since I've done that. I'm sure there are others at the KT who can advise you. Thanks for sharing this terrific event with us.

Isn't Taylor only 7 months old? She must be way ahead of where she should be. How nice that you were able to experience that.

Long time since I have pottytrained a child too, but I think between the ages of 2 and 3 is normal. Accidents can be expected of course.

I think it's wonderful that one of your first 'rewards' happened while you both were there.

As for potty training, it varies from child to child. I have a step-grandaughter who is 11 years old and a grandson who is 6 - both still wear a Pullup at night - their peds tell their mom it's nothing to worry about - kids under stress have this problem, and some kids just have weak bladder muscles. Others are heavy sleepers and their brain doesn't tell them they have to go to the bathroom.

Just get her a little potty chair and take her with you to the bathroom when you go - once she gets the concept, she will try to imitate mommy. High praise is always good and a reward system is helpful, but diligence and patience are the keys, imho, to successful teaching.

Now your hands will be really full. LOL Chasing after the little "toddler". Make sure she still gets in a lot of crawling time. I suggest those play tunnels. Studies have shown that crawling is an important motor skill for future learning issues. My son was a roller. The tunnel "made" him crawl.

About the potty training. there is no age. But if the younger ones see you and the oldest using the potty they will pick up on it themselves.

Accidents are perfectly normal often through the age of 5. Being potty trained doesn't always mean full bladder (or even bowel) control or awareness yet. Sometimes they forget in the the excitement of play or while concentrating on something else. Sometimes they simply don't fell it until whoops> LOL But it will be OK They all get it by the time they're in elementary school.

They can't enter preschool nor pre-k until they are at least daytime potty trained.

That is sooooooo exciting!!! How awesome that you and DH got to experience that. It is just incredible...please remind us all how old she is. (I'm thinking around 9 months - if so, she is walking on the early side. Typically kids walk at 12 months...you might have an over-achiever on your hands!!!)

By my calculations Taylor is 10 months by now. Not unusual for some to start walking then. Walking early or late has nothing to do with other achievements. Anytime during the second 9 months of life is considered the normal range.

Just yesterday I was thinking that Taylor would be taking those first steps now. Gosh, you would think I was her granny!

A girl can generally begin training at about 14 months but you would be the judge of her being ready. I put out the potty chair and I had bought a rubber doll who peed. I showed her how the Dolly ate food and water and then needed to pee and sure enough she did it. Only took one day hahaha. I was lucky.

my greatgrandaughter will be 1 sometime this month...she just started walking too..But I haven't seen her in action yet.

My daughter has custody of her...because her mother didn't want her. My grandson (the baby's dad wants her...but his situation just doesn't work right now.) The baby has bonded to her grandma and grandma is just 42 so young enough to be there for her. I personally think it would be better to just leave her there...Daddy can visit her anytime he wants. And my daughter lets her mother see her when she wants (at my daughters home) She is trying to get custody of the grandson too..He will be 4 this aug. He is a ward of the state she lives in but is staying with his other grandma. But she doens't want it to be permanent. It interfers with her lifestyle...They are rich and have things to do.

He loves to go and stay with my daughter "on the farm" he calls it.

FW said Tayler's 9 months. My kids both walked at 10 months, and I have friends who've had theirs actually walking earlier.

As for potty training, it's time (since you said Trace is 2 1/2). Kids all have their own time frame for being broken of the accident habit, and for us I segmented potty training into two different goals; day and night. In the daytime, I would use a timer and have my kids go every 30 minutes. If there were more accidents, I'd do every 20 minutes. It's a little hectic, but it works. Also, I never used kid potties. I got an adaptable kids seat that attaches to the big potty seat so they don't fall in, oh and a stool to stand on.

DD got both nighttime and daytime potty training down perfectly at age 2. DS however is a deeeeeeeep sleeper and we still (at age 6) have to wake him in the middle of the night or he'll piddle the bed. But he's had daytime training down since he was about 2 1/2. Oh and no drinks after 7pm.

You may have a little more to deal with because sometimes kids who are going through emotional stress can have more accidents. Just be patient and loving and they'll get it eventually. :)

the joy of girls is they watch sister(s), catch on...plan on diapers for a while..dgd who will be 3 this month trained herself and is now dry thru the night for a good nine months now...but both she and big bro are also reminded to go before going outside, when they come in...and both are very good at washing their hands...consistancy on dd2's part...

Oh how exciting.....Lucky you to have seen it happen.They get so excited at themselves...too cute. Girls train easier than boys IMO...don't worry about it. They will get it eventually.My twin grandchildren are 3.5 and not there completely yet.. Don't worry...be happy !!

IMHO she's very young to expect much potty training along with all the other millions of things she's learning at this time, to say nothing of the major upheaval she has experienced in her life. It probably would not do any harm to get a little potty for her, but it would be wrong to force the issue even a little.

So glad you were able to share that BIG moment with Miss Tayler!! My girls started walking at 10 & 11 months. Since she has an older sister to watch she'll probably do a lot of things quicker! Can't be left behind!! :)

As for potty training, usually around 2 1/2 or 3, but it's totally up to the child. You can't force it until they are ready. I also think it might be a good idea to wait until things settle down since there have been huge changes in their life lately. Definitely encourage and praise her tries, but don't expect much. I used a calendar and put a sticker on each day she sat on the potty and tried. I think it helped to have a visual of all her accomplishments (and a few M&Ms didn't hurt either!)

Completely normal to have accidents, but try to have her break from play every hour or so and at least try to go potty, and always before you leave the house! Even my 5 year old gets caught up in activities and has to make that mad dash!

Congrats again on your new and improved family! Sounds like you are all doing great!!

So exciting to see the baby walking for the first time! She is pretty young, but it's so cute to see them toddle across the floor. They just think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread!

As far as potty training, I sure ain't the one to ask. I didn't think my daughter was ever going to get the idea, so I finaly quit making a big deal out of it and once she told me she had to potty, she never had another accident day or night. Of course, she was 3, but what the heck.

with the potty training..be sure to make a really big deal of the achievements and say little or nothing about the "accidents"

My kids were early walkers (10, 6 and 8 months respectively..and yes not a type, DS walked at 6 months) It's exciting, but OH soooo hard on the back (they want to walk everywhere, and so you have to hold their hand).

Potty training, she sounds right where she should be. Forgets when too busy, and night time trained takes longer. Personally I think pull-ups are good for at night, but durring the day..good old cotton panties. Kids HATE being wet, pull-ups don't let them feel wetness.

I have to say ditto to what Wildchild said about getting her to keep crawling at times. My DS was a 'roller', rolled wherever he went, didn't start walking until after 12 months, and never crawled. When in Kindergarten he was having some speech problems and had to go to summer school for therapy and one of the things they stressed was that crawling was essential for brain/speech development. I had to do speech therapy routines with him at home also. He was fine afterwards.

Follow all of the above advice regarding potty training,just don't rush it.

Donna that's interesting. My son also had to have speech therapy from the age of 3 through the second grade. He's more than fine today (could out speak anyone both with vocabulary and enunciation) but he still has an "accent".

I knew there could be developmental issues with non crawlers in the areas of reading and writing. I hadn't known about the speech connection. Makes sense.
