three beautiful little girls!!!

About a month ago my cousin told her mom that she didn't want her little girls anymore and was going to turn them over to the state. Her then exhusband said he wanted custody and then backed out. We were just sick so we petitioned the court to get full custody of girls. Their mom and dad's (2) signed their rights away and yesterday at 11:00 we took full legal custody of the girls.

Tanna is 4 1/2, Trace is 2 1/2 and Tayler is 9 months old.

We were never able to have children of our own so this is such a wonderful blessing for us.

They came to us with the clothes on their back and that was it so we are headed out of town this weekend to get clothes, beds and everything they will need. My parents, sister and her family are coming to help us get settled.

It still really hasn't sank it yet that I am now a mom.

P. J., as usual I'm late...but want to acknowledge first hand the importance of what you're doing. A year ago in January we lost our precious nephew to leukemia after a valiant battle of 18 months. Thousands had attended a bone marrow drive and several hundred pints of blood were donated. Matthew was like a grandchild to us, and while we loved him dearly & thought him absolutely wonderful, we had no idea how beloved he was to others. We'd never seen such an outpouring of love for a young person. All schools were closed; Principal and baseball coach spoke of how Matt always took new students under his wing- how he wouldn't tolerate anyone bullying another, etc. Four of his nurses came to the service despite threat of firing if they didn't come in to work. Leader of country singing group, "Lone Star" wrote a special song for Matt then came & sang it at his service. It was the first time I'd ever seen a Minister totally break down while holding a funeral; once composed he said he had seen Matt in the same pew every Sunday for 15 years. All employees that didn't close their businesses stood outside as the procession went by. Later I went to newspaper office & when Editor heard me say I wanted to purchase copies of a particular edition, he came out of his office & asked if I was related. Then refused to let me pay for 20 copies of the paper with front page pic, announcement, and two more articles and pictures inside and unashamedly wept as he told me how Matt had pulled the whole town together in his illness and even before that had a reputation for touching lives with his deep caring & concern for one and all. His parents established a scholarship because Matt had expressed concerns that several of his friends families could not afford college for them. We contributed 'til it truly hurt. I can't help but wonder how many more lives he may have touched and what wonderful things he may have accomplished had he lived. While he left a hole in our lives, no one want him to suffer any longer. When Matt knew the end was near, he asked his Dad to please finish putting up walls in their rec room (they already had TV's, pool tables, games, etc.) of their new home and continue to have his buddies over for church's Youth Night. The day after the funeral a bunch of guys showed up to put up sheetrock, mud and & paint walls! Hats off to you, P.J. Your gift may one day save another child and family from this heartbreaking, devastating disease. God bless!

What a wonderfully thought out house. I like that the guest room can accommodate a health aide, in the future. Something like that can extend the amount of time one can maintain some form of relative independence in one's own home. We're also building an empty-nester house & we could have reduced the footprint of the house by putting all of the "guest" bedrooms in the lower level (unfinished, for now). However, we chose to generously size the room and include an en suite bath so that whoever may need to stay there for a more extended period than the occasional guest would be comfortable. Even if we don't have a health aide, there may come a time when one of us needs extra equipment (hospital type bed, oxygen, etc.) so it will be nice if the other can rest more comfortably in another room while still being within calling distance. Christine- you saved a life! Not many can say that! I like to think I'm the type that won't panic but since I've never been in a true life threatening situation, I can't know for sure. I was an athletic trainer in high school, in football country, so I've had my fair share of calming injured persons down. This is completely anecdotal but football players are WAY more "sissy" than softball/volleyball girls. I had to restrain several girls and tell them "NO, I need to look at that ankle!" while I had to tell at least one football player to get up and get off the field! The closest "panic" experience I've had was when my 2 year old severely burned herself. I only had panicky feelings AFTER she was at the hospital. During the moment, I was in the moment, using the skills and knowledge I had to help her. Did I ever mention my original "when I'm grown up I want to be..." was a doctor? Probably helps that my dad was a first responder and I remember sitting around the dinner table and him telling about reaching into a guys broken leg and pinching the femoral artery shut. When we were at a family gathering later and he was sharing the story, others were disgusted and couldn't finish their meals!! That's when I learned that other people have a different tolerance/panic level than we (my family) do. Marrying ketshup....EWWWW!!!!!!! Look, I'll save the old, almost empty bottle (in the fridge) to use next time but mixing them? Bleh!! Shaken, not stirred? All juices, salsa, ranch, BBQ sauce, basically all condiments, chocolate milk, tea. I'm a southern gal but growing up my mom only drank unsweetened tea. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I learned that southern iced tea is generally sweet tea. Still can't stand it to this day. IF I'm going to have tea it will be iced and NOT sweet! Also, no one else has said it but can I just say that canned veggies need to die a horribly slow painful death? The only veggies I got growing up (remember mom HATED cooking) were canned. Canned corn (Meh, OK in a pinch) canned peas (SOOO mushy!!), canned carrots (OK, if I can't have fresh I actually do prefer canned to frozen), canned beets (BLEH!!! Still my most hated veggie to this day) canned green beans (THIS is LITERALLY the worst!!! Salty, limpy, bad flavor yuckiness put in a can!!!) The only one I actually liked and still buy/stock my pantry with is hominey. My canned goods storage is very different from my moms. Her pantry was/is stocked with canned veggies, soups, beans, etc. The cans in my pantry are generally tomato sauce/paste (hoping to start growing my own next year!!), and prepped beans. Pinto, black, refried, black eyed peas, etc. I really want to start my garden next year and grow tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, garlic and herbs to start with. Hopefully, years from now, my daughters will talk about mom's atrocious pantry with ready made foods because they have grown accustomed to having fresh food. :)

What a blessing for both you & your hubby and the little girls. It breaks my heart that they are so worried about whether they'll get to eat again. You really have to thank their Mom for finally realizing she wasn't cut out for Mommyhood. Praise the Lord!

Congratulations on your entry into the wonderful world of Motherhood!! I skipped this post earlier because I was in a hurry and I assumed it was about adopting a puppy! How surprised I was when I came back tonight and actually read it!! What lucky little girls they are! I know you and your DH will be loving, caring parents who will provide not only the basic necessities of life, but the "extras" that make childhood so special! God bless all five of you!! If you will e-mail me with your address, I would love to send some books, etc. for each of them. I'm a grandmother and I keep my grandchildren inundated with reading material!! Lol

This has to be one of the best posts I have ever read on here!! I am soooo very happy for you but more so for those little ones! You have so many trying and joyful times ahead of you. You have blessed these little girls with an open heart and loving home....I know you will be blessed also for doing so.

I am thrilled for all of you.. They are so lucky to have you and your DH. Someone memtioned it looked like the oldest had been doing the mothering. So sad when this happens to a young child. I know she will have a wonderful life with your family. Wonderful grandma and auntie, too. There is nothing more wonderful then hugs. I know each day will get better and better. The love the girls will receive is beyond what they will ever imagine.. Congrats Mommy and Daddy on you new delivery!!!!!! Send us some pictures when you get the time... We will all be thrilled to see your daughters..

Wow-I have goosebumps here too! What a wonderful story! I'm so glad those girls have someone like you and your DH to step up when they needed someone. I can't fathom just giving up your 3 children, but it sounds like they actually made a good decision since the girls are with you now.

I also can't imagine a child wondering if a next meal will ever come, it just breaks your heart. The idea of setting the table for the next meal sounds like it may reassure the kids.

Good Luck in the coming day, months, years! It won't be easy all the time, but everyone here is supporting you! I wish I lived closer to give you some of my girl things! My girls are 5 1/2 & 2!

I just can't believe what I'm reading. How extrememly sad that any mother or father would readily give up their own flesh and blood. It hits me so strongly.

I have an adopted son and my first husband was adopted as well.
Down the road they will want to know more about their parents and that is a very difficult thing as many times they get hurt again. At this time even if they do ask questions your answers can be pretty short and reassuring but later on, that won't be the case. I have so many memories of my husbands negative experiences. Our son was totally different as he didn't have the amount of negativity to contend with.

I'm so happy for all of you. How sad when a 4 year old has to be worried about whether there will be food for the next meal. That is so very, very sad.

I can't keep the tears back, either. Both sad ones and happy ones. Sad for what they must have been going through and happy for the new life ahead for all of you.

You will always cherish this chance and responsibility you have been given.

I'm so happy for all of you.

It certainly proves that when one door closes, another one opens.

Oh, that poor little girl, having to worry about getting enough food. I am so happy for them that their difficulties are over and they have REAL parents now. Congratulations!!

New Statistics reveal that 1 are 50 Children is homeless. How sad! And people go to foreign countries to adopt.

I agree that this is the best post ever at this forum. My heart is warmed and I'm thrilled for all 5 of you, as well as your extended families. I'm sure the grandmother of these precious children was devastated when her daughter told her she was going to give them to the state. And then she must've rejoiced that you and your DH saved them.

Congratulations on the arrival of your 3 precious girls. I also agree that this is divine intervention. I believe that God is watching over you and knew that you would be a family.

This is by far the most wonderful, moving post I've ever read! I am in tears and in awe. Those precious baby girls finally have a home, a REAL home, and a real mommy and daddy. HUGE cyber hugs for all of you. Congratulations!!!!

I am also a firewife so I know those girls were actually adopted into a MUCH larger family than just the two of you. Oh my gosh, the fun things that lay ahead of you... I'm so excited for you :o)

My husband was adopted into a terrible family and wound up being removed as a preteen. He grew up "in the system" on a boys ranch and then in a group home. So whenever I hear something like this I think "YES, score one for the kids!!" Thank you thank you thank you, for being such wonderful people! Wishing you a lifetime of happiness!

YES, I agree, books. You should have books. Reading surrounded by children is wonderful. I have such precious memories of bedtime stories. It is one of the things I miss the most. We definitely should help you with some sort of KT shower. Make a list! :o)

Well, just let me go on vacation and see what happens! Great news for you & all your family!! Those 3 little girls are a blessing to you and you are one back to them! You might want to ask your MD for a child psychologist referral to see if the girls will need some help adjusting to having real parents! If nothing else -- ask Tanna for favorite meals.. and make some sort of poster menu for the week? That way she can see that it's all going to be there.. Anyway... I'm soooo very happy for all of you!

I'm so touched by your story, and love reading your exploits. It so impresses me when your husband just buys dolls and Barbie's accessories on his own. How wonderful. So many guys wouldn't even know.

So the big question is: Have you got a van yet?? LOL

A little late to the party but what incredible and joyous news! I can imagine how thrilled you and your husband are and the doll story really made me smile to know that he's as thrilled and involved as are you.

They sound like wonderful children. So sad about their eating problems in the past and yes it'll take a while to get over that but you're clearly taking great steps to help her and them settle in and soon they'll know that this is a different and better life. One suggestion, take it for what it's worth. How about letting them help plan out meals? Do a menu for a week or so and let them help. I would think that would relieve some apprehension about whether they will eat and it's never too early to let them help in their own way on the meal prep. BTW, don't forget about the library! That can be a regular outing.

One thing I want to say though, there's a lot of comments and I'm sure even more thoughts about the natural parents and I want to point out how many people give children bad lives but WON'T give them up. I want to give credit that the mother realized she couldn't handle them anymore and willingly gave up her rights. That must be difficult to do. And the fathers gave up their rights too. Kudos to them too. I hope they're not left out in the cold. Not suggesting visitation or anything but maybe an update occasionally to let them know how the kids are doing could be nice. Just something to think about... not that there's anything else on your mind now!!! ;) They'll probably ask about their parents sometime and should know the full story age appropriate and I have confidence you'll do what you feel is right. I have the utmost confidence in you and your husband, respect for you for doing this and taking all three - not everyone would take on a chore like this, and it really is a win-win-win situation. For you, the kids and yes the bio-parents. Make that a win-win-win-win, since they didn't wind up in some shelter, orphanage or something. Really puts a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart. Good for you and all of you.

So many things to do, so much fun too. Of course there'll be ups and downs but I can tell you'll do just fine and be one big happy family. My best to all of you!

Congratulations,i havn't been on here in probably a week,and i also started to not open it thinking it was abot animals.Wow i'm glad i changed my mind.

You and DH have done a wonderful thing and will be blessed many times over for it.I'm sooooooooooooo happy for those little girls.You have been truly blessed.May you and DH have many wonderful and happy times with YOUR girls.I can imagine what xmas will be like this year.
You guys are off to an incredibley happy life.
