Oh, my, I haven't thought of Hominy in years and years. My Mom used to make (heat) it and i liked it. I'll have to ask Hubs if he likes it and put it on my shopping list. As for lunch here, today. He had a cold sandwich and a glass of chocolate milk and I had a tossed salad. It is still too hot to cook, but there is relief coming tomorrow....Hooray!!!

If I have ever had it, I sure dont remember it. does it taste anything like corn ?
No lunch here, but plan to make something soon. Just "me" home today, so it can be quick & simple, I think I will make a couple of Tacos !

My Dad and Grandmother use to make homemade hominy! It was an all day process..but it makes the stuff in a can taste like dog food smells! lol I remember they had to use ashes of some kind and Red Devil LYE and everything was cooked in a big cast iron pot!

Yes..I do like hominy and will eat the canned..only because that's the only choice I have!

Every now and then I have to have some...So I'll buy myself a can...and fry it in butter...(well...margarine)

I used to slice sausage links, s&p, and heat until the sausage seasoned the hominy.

I beyond enjoy hominy. If we are having a big country breakfast, then we are having hominy. I stir fry it with butter, salt and pepper. We always have biscuits and gravy to go with it. I'll have to try the sausage in the pan with it.

I have to say that's one of the few things I just can't eat. Anything brined in lye just can't taste good (at least to me). Harry thought he'd had it when he was a kid and liked it so I bought a can thinking maybe my taste has changed. Nope--neither one of us could eat it.

Our main meal is coming up in a few minutes--leftover chili that's smelling really good!

My Mother used to fix it like creamed peas. I always liked it fixed that way. I have never had it any other way.

I needed to make something in a hurry for a covered dish get together that was themed "soul food." I had noticed a hominy based recipe, maybe on KT. I do not know where the credit goes.

I bought a GIANT can of Bushes yellow hominy, drained off some of the liquid and added one can of Cream of Chichen soup and simmered it for about 15 minutes.

Ladies kept asking for the recipe. I was almost ashamed to tell them how simople it was. It was all eaten.

No hominy for me.

Is that the same as grits? I loved grits but never called it hominy and never saw it in a can...hominy must be something different than grits?

My siste used to take a can of drained Hominy and mix it with 1 can of flaked up Corned Beef and fry them together in a little bit of oil. delicious I make it once in a while!! thnks for mentioning it

But I also like the casserole made with hominy, grated cheese, sour cream and chopped Ortega chiles/

I grew up eating it for breakfast! Hominy and eggs were a big deal at our house. I always keep it around here too. I love it.

Here's Pioneer Woman's hominy casserole
(Just give it to me undoctored)

8 whole Slices Bacon
1 whole Large Onion, Finely Diced
4 whole 14.5 Ounce Cans White Hominy, Drained
2 whole 4-ounce Cans Diced Green Chilies
1 cup Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese
1 whole Jalapeno, Seeded And Finely Diced
Extra Cheddar, Bacon, And Chilies For Sprinkling
Preparation Instructions
Fry the bacon until almost crisp; remove from skillet and drain all but a couple of tablespoons bacon grease. Crumble the bacon and set aside.
Add onion to skillet and cook for a couple of minutes. Pour in hominy and stir for a couple of minute until warm. Add cheese, chilies, jalapenos (if using), and bacon and stir until cheese is melted. Remove from heat.
Pour mixture into a large baking pan and sprinkle with a little more cheese, bacon, and green chilies, if desired.

Bake at 350 for 15 minutes, or until hot and heated through.

Serve with hamburgers, brisket, steaks, or with a salad for a delicious lunch. YouÂll love it!

We love hominy! It was one of my son's favorite foods, and he ate it at least three times a week.

I love canned hominy. I grew up eating it. I usually heat it up and add some butter substitute. I once ate it right out of the can.

Guess it has been more than 60 years since I have eaten hominy. Been thinking about it. Think I will try Glenda's idea with the sausage. Of course the casserole sounds really good also.

I can take it or leave it but all my guys love it so I always have a can or two in the pantry.They like the white.Really not much difference in the yellow and white.One is made with white corn and the other with yellow.LOL DH says there's a difference in the taste but I can't tell it.Sometimes drain it and put it in a skillet with a little bacon grease,salt and pepper and brown it a little.Usually just drain off most of the liquid and season with bacon grease,salt and pepper.The men like it in goulash also.I'd rather not have it in goulash!LOL

Glenda, I had to laugh about your eating asparagus out of the can. Harry loves it and prefers the canned over fresh.

Finally found the hominy. First two stores didn't carry it and when I would ask for assistance, they would take me straight to grits. Found it in the Mexican section of the next store. I cooked the sausage links and stirred this into the pan. Totally love hominy, ate it yesterday afternoon for a snack. This morning for breakfast. How did i go for the last 60 years not eating it. Glenda, think you are the one that started the subject of hominy, thanks, I now have a favorite new food.

Hominy is grits/grits are hominy, just ground up. Also, the snack food corn nuts are made from the same thing, maize. I do like it but recently found out to get it white and soft it is processed using lye in some way, that kind of creeps me out. But that's what they do to make lutefisk, that Norwegian fish dish.

Never tried it.

I am giggling about Glenda and her canned asparagus. My Mother ate hers out of the can as well. She loved it!

I will admit I like yellow hominy better than white but sometimes I can only find the white. I think I shall make some for breakfast tomorrow.

My hubby loves it, I remember shortly after we were married, I was asking him to let me know some of his favorite foods were. He said he liked hominy...so I heated up some added some butter and salt and pepper... when I served it, he asked why didn't you "cook " it ? well, thats the only way I had ever had ... His mom,( was from the south ) had always fried it... I haven 't served it in a long time... will have to make it for him soon.

Glenda, I'll put hominy in the same category as those meat and potatoes in a cup thingies--just doesn't look right! LOL!
