I enjoy this forum so much

Today I have a day off and I had planned to plant peas, but the weather is cold and windy and it rained last night. So I am just enjoying all you gardeners who are also stuck inside. I can take care of my worm bin and might even build a tomato cage or two from bamboo. I really appreciate all of you being here.steve

Thanks, Steve! I enjoy this forum a lot too! I learn so much from everyone. And I really like being able to correspond with others who share my love of gardening. Thanks to everyone!

I really enjoy it as well and am so glad you appreciate it, too! While things may liven up in a month or so because that's when gardening gets really underway for many of us, it's nice to have others to talk to when planning is underway or we have questions we forgot to ask when we were busy!

That is a very beautiful garden, Jeane. Yup, get rid of that part of your name. Be patient. Next year, it will fill out. I have 3 large Hosta that I need to divide: 'Elegans', Sum & Substance' and Plantaginea. I can send you a piece of each for postage if you are interested. PLMK I will have a lot of Dahlia tubers to share as well. I also have a garden full of perennials that I am thinning out..especially Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' and many other stuffs.

Thank you, trospero, for that very interesting info., I appreciate your knowledge. It's only my hunch, so I need your experience on this, trospero, regarding my own-root roses: 1) Meilland in France, a more alkaline soil with hotter summer, bred roses vigorous as own-root in alkaline soil. David Austin, in more acidic soil and cooler climate, bred roses more vigorous as own-roots in such environment. Nahema with Heritage as the parent is wimpy here, only 5 blooms per year. I dug up Nahema and the root is very small. In contrast, Meilland Liv Tyler produces tons of blooms and the bush is 3 times larger in my hot summer near 100 degrees. 2) Kim Rupert bred "Annie L. McDowell" by choosing the best seedling of Renae x Renae in his alkaline soil and water. I bought Annie as a tiny band, now its rootball is huge, at least 2 gallons when I transferred from pot to soil yesterday. Compare that to Nahema with Austin Heritage as pollen parent, bought as gallon-size, but its root shrank here. My conclusion: buy own-roots where it's bred in a climate and soil similar to one's own.

I was a bit of a fanatic for a few years when I finally got interested in cooking...I too haunted the library and bookstores for cookbooks. But then I ran across a marvelous book, "Impromptu Cooking" by Glenn Andrews. In it, she describes how she went from a strictly "follow the recipe" cook to one who can wing it. And best of all, encouraged me to try. I reread her book often...(she does include recipes and variations) but mostly for inspiration. First, you have to get all the basics of course, (and a favorite along those lines was, for me, Rene Verdon's "French Cooking for the American Table" for the "why" of things. I've still got quite a few cookbooks, but I've quit acquiring new ones ...or if I do succumb, pass it along after reading. thank-you! It was such a relief to come back and see replies and advice! Lavender Lass--Those windows have driven me #$%$^&!!! :) In the end it came to what common window sizes worked in our 8ft ceilings and would also give us the longest bank of windows without having a post in the middle of my view. I couldn't get 3 windows to work as well. Our roofline is low on this side of the house and the exterior soffits protrude so I have to be careful of balance. I'm quite at peace with the windows/sink location. The windows will be square. rhome-I'm glad you addressed the cupboards flanking the range. I'm not sure why I'm having such a hard time visualizing those. I have a bank of cupboards like you described (no corner angling). I know some people dislike them but I guess I'm tall enough that the reach doesn't bother me. Good idea on turning that pantry. I had planned on using it as a combo broom closet/bulky appliance (crockpot,electic griddle, etc.) cupboard My only concern is if it would work with the existing flush wood vent that is in the hardwood in that location. florantha--I'm waffling on plunk space---I know the evil of which you speak. We've gotten better as we have a very tall dog with a whippy tail and counter-height nose. processing leftovers-to the right of the cleanup sink, same with toast (the toaster will likely live to the left of the range) Making sandwiches will either happen there or on the island. florantha/bmore As far as the microwave I *think* I'm going to put it on the left of the island. I know myself well enough that I would rather take an extra few steps out of my work triangle then to have someone IN my work triangle. I tend to do a lot of re-heating from the kitchen table and from our coffee/tea station (the far-left from the cleanup sink, where the open shelves are) so it would certainly be convenient for that. Our girls are forever microwaving their hot wheat bags 'warm-ups'. bmore-I hope we can make the disposal work with a pull out garbage. The garbage would be pulling out on the corner, towards the windows and the base sink cabinets would open towards the fridge. Would that work? Is it rhome that has a similar setup? sandyponder--I knew I recognized your name, it kept coming up in archived posts about corner ranges when I was exploring that avenue! . I'm going to make that prepsink as large as the cabinet will allow although I haven't figured out schematics yet. Stay tuned for more questions on that when we start picking cabinets and sinks! I'm being booted off of the laptop as my DH just plated dinner. Thank you all so much for the time and thought put into your replies.

Yea, rigth. We gotta get over our winter blues and GW is a good place.
But on a more serious note, I have learned a lot here and continue learning. As a token of my appreciation, I also do share my knowledge an experience.

This is pretty much where I start my day. Coffee, check new posts, then on to work. I have a small garden space that's mostly shaded, but "one day" hope to have a nice sunny garden plot. One day? For now I come here and enjoy everybody's gardens. Did you check out that blue corn, wow!
Right now I'm enjoying mustard greens and turnips. Yum!

This is a friendly, informative place to come with questions, problems, or just plain old bragging! I have learned so much from y'all, and I've been gardening for almost 40 years. So, thanks a bunch!

I've been a member here for 8 years. I must admit in the beginning, December '01/January '02 it was kinda drab; the ppl didnt seem to know very much. But that has all changed now. I hit this forum at least 15-20 times a day (no exaggeration) to see what's new to learn or to answer. I love it as well :-)

John z I share your problem of shady garden spot right now. In the summer it gets sunny, but right now, its shady and damp back there. I'm still gonna get some peas in there early and hope a few hours of partial sun will get them started. but yeah, this is the place to garden right now for me. steve

Been a member for maybe a month, computer skilled, did not know such a diverse, vegetable, garden, forum existed on-line. Extremely satisfied, started gardening in 1987 at Georgia Southern University, been doing it in NE FL, SE GA for 23yrs.

This forum really has grown into a great resource. I know I have learned a lot, and can always find an answer here, or just share experiences. It's nice this time of year to come read posts about gardening when there's 3" of fresh snow outside. My gardening coworkers wonder how I know so much about varieties and techniques, and it's in large part because of GW. =)

This has always been a welcoming forum. I haven't been around very much the last 12 months or so but often read what's here. The growing season is a real busy time and it feels kind of sneaky to just pop up afterward and then disappear as folks need quick questions answered. And, when I need some quick ideas, too.

I guess I'll just have to jump in and out when the outdoor weather is sunny and nice and maybe folks can put up with me when there's only looking out the window, seed catalogs or . . ?? Seems kind of self-serving and lazy of me but I can try to do better . . . you all, deserve it.
