Newbie continuing to learn lessons about wsing (pics)

Haven't been on the forum for the past month. My son and his family came from Okinawa and spent the month of July with me. He helped me so much--trimming trees, new roof and my barn storage building, planting large shrubs and trees that I hadn't been able to do--it was wonderful. And, of course, I had a wonderful time with my two grandkids, Emily - 14, and Bradley - 12.

I was origionally disappointed in some of my WS flowers because they are mostly green leaves growing--(I planted too many perennial and not enough annuals, but I will correct that next year and can't wait to see all my perennials in bloom.)

Here are a few pictures of my new beds, they look beautiful to me, even if there is not enough color yet.

This is one of my favorite flowers, I will plant many, many more next year. I also gave two of my friends lots for their yards...impatients do wonderful here and bloom so long--until the first frost!!! Next year I am going to try the balsum variety. Got to find some seeds to order.

I also love my hosta bed--I ordered these at the end of last year's growing season, and all but one came back up.

And last, but not least are these two plants called Cat's Whiskers which I got when I went to a native plant class last year. I love them, and so do the butterfly's and humming birds.

I enjoy this forum so much, I can't wait until it cools off so I can work in my yard again. I have so much weeding, etc. that I need to do. I sure have enjoyed everybody's pictures--keep them coming!!! Also hope I have not taken up too much space and your time.

There's a saying about perennials; the first year they sleep, the second they creep and the third year they leap. You will be surprised by the way it will fill out in that time. I like the way you laid out your beds.

Jeane: Next year and thereafter you will be so happy to have all those perennials. They will most likely reward you for years to come.

The new beds are beautiful. Do post updates for us next year so we can see them with the perennials in bloom.

I learned that, as time-consuming as it is, keeping good records for six years has helped me learn when my best successes are for sowing/germination of different seeds. I learned that, even if everything seems as if it is done correctly, some years some types of plants just won't do well - and other people often have the same experience with the same plant! I learned that, in my 7th year, I have enough of a "feel" for this now not to have to keep such detailed records. I learned that I still have a long way to go to try out all the seeds in the world. :) I learned that, if I grow an over-abundance of plants (and I usually do), my church can sell them at the annual garden tour/fundraiser and make a respectable amount for local missions (such as soup kitchens and food pantries). Retiredprof, I regularly collect seeds from my garden anyway, but had to this year, as I will be moving to a new location. I collected 202 varieties this year, of which 35 were from locations other than my own garden. Of the remaining 167, 48 were from plants that I had either bought this year or received divisions of in the past, but 119 were from plants I had wintersown, either this year or previously. How I am going to cull will depend on the cross. I bought most crosses with the specific intent of making sib crosses or even crossing back to the parent (when I own it). I don't expect anything of value to come through in the first generation. In those cases, I will make seeds, destroy the all the sibs, and then select in the following generations for horticultural merit. And by this I mean tall scapes, topped with large, flat and abundant flowers - good foliage, too. A plant with good proportions. I know it's against the trend, but I'm not hung up on branching, it's not the end-all and be-all. I think a high scape:fan ratio is a valuable statistic, too. I have a seedling that doesn't branch at all, and is awash in well distributed blooms, great shape, great color... scapes like crazy (its flaw: very weak, skimpy foliage). Other crosses will be ready for selection next summer. To give an example, I think "Born To Run" has a superb floral face and color. I actually bought "Born To Run" to compare it to all the seedlings I have grown in order to have a gold standard. To know if "Born To Run" is improved upon, I must have that plant... So to condense all this rambling, what you select depends on the cross.

The idea for the shallow pool was to be a place to sit on a beach chair and read a book. Because of the slope on that side of the house it would have required much higher retaining walls to have the main pool in that location. The aesthetic goal was to be able to see water upon entering the home. Since we also wanted the sound of the waterfall this is the solution our landscape architect came up with. We didn't want a hot tub. The main pool is 3.5 feet deep on either side and 5.5 feet in the middle. We didn't want a deep end since in our previous home everyone always congregated around the shallow end.

I was at first overjoyed to read sweet Boone was doing better, than saddened to read he had another issue, then another, and now my heart is literally breaking for the loss of your sweet boy, Oak. Know you are not alone in your tears as I weep for your loss as if it were mine. He knew true love when he looked into your eyes, and always remember that. The joyous memories of Boone and Gracie will last a lifetime. Take your time to grieve, but have an open heart to allow another little puppy( or two!)to thrive on the love you gave your 2 babies for many years. Wow, everything looks beautiful! It is so green and lush. A lot of my stuff is getting dried out since it's been over 100 degrees for days now.

That is a very beautiful garden, Jeane. Yup, get rid of that part of your name. Be patient. Next year, it will fill out.

I have 3 large Hosta that I need to divide: 'Elegans', Sum & Substance' and Plantaginea. I can send you a piece of each for postage if you are interested. PLMK I will have a lot of Dahlia tubers to share as well.
I also have a garden full of perennials that I am thinning out..especially Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' and many other stuffs.

Hello - I have some seeds willing to send for SASE (up to 6 packs). Among those on hand are Balsam impatiens camilla - asst colors. Let me know soon if you are going to send a SASE so I'll set them aside for you.

Your beds are looking great! I love your cat's whiskers. I had some but they didn't come back this year. I like the combination of red impatiens and the caladiums:)
