Headed to Williamsburg VA for mini vacation

I will only be there for 2 days - any tips from fellow KT'ers on what to do or what not to do?

Right now I am thinking I'll visit Jamestown first and then Colonial Williamsburg.

Check the weather. Right now the forecast for the next five days is looking good. However, just in case, if the weather isn't good, I would save Jamestown for the bad weather day because you can do the museum inside whereas Colonial Williamsburg is a lot of outside walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Sunday is the warmest day in which case that would be a good day to be inside an air conditioned museum. Saturday morning is the farmer's market in Merchant's Square. The Fat Canary is a wonderful restaurant....pricey and a little noisy unless you go to the 5:30 seating or you can sit outside with a lighter menu. Other good restaurants include La Yaca in the Kingsmill shopping center, Opus 9 (Steaks, etc.)in New Town (great for lunch - lots of $10.00 selections), Ichi Ban in New Town (Asian) and inexpensive, Bone Fish in New Town or Bon Amici in New Town. For less pricey fare Sal's by Victor (Italian) In Williamsburg Shopping Center also Bangkok Gardens on Richmond Rd, a Thai Restaurant...not too fancy but good food. I have never eaten at the taverns. Generally not noted for the food and a little pricey but it's probably a fun experience. It will take you every bit of the two days to do both Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. They do not publicize discounts but if you are a school teacher you get a discount, if you are in a wheelchair, if you are the caretaker for someone in a wheelchair you get a discount, or if you volunteer at another museum, you get in free (be sure to bring identification pass if you are a volunteer) If you have some free time after Jamestown, you might want to visit Yorktown. Enjoy your visit. Hope you have great weather and a great visit.

I love Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg, but my favorite part of that area is Busch Gardens. I haven't been there for many years, but love amusement parks.

If you are ever visiting Northern California, take the time to visit Filoli Estate in Woodside, CA, about 25 miles south of San Francisco. It was built by William Bourne, a mining king, and later sold to Lillian Matson Roth of the Matson shipping line fortune. She lived in Hawaii most of the time but Filoli was her 'gardening estate'. It is 200 acres, now run by the National Trust. Landscape students from all over the world come to do internships there. About 20 acres are landscaped gardens, but because Lillian really did love to garden, it's done as a series of different small gardens, all opening onto each other. There's a rose garden, a Shakespearean knot garden, a Dutch garden, an Italian garden, a water garden, etc. There are some incredibly rare plants in the gardens. Lillian became close friends with John McLaren, the Head Gardener for Golden Gate Park (SF's answer to NYC's Central Park). Whenever McLaren would get shipments of rare plants, some of them would mysteriously make a journey south to be planted in Filoli. It is open March through October. The website is www.filoli.org. Guided tours are done by reservation only during the week, as I recall; they are the best way for first-time visitors. Remember that our spring in Northern CA is in March/April; summer starts in May; August (since our summers are dry) bakes the hills brown so there's little in bloom except for roses, lavender and rosemary, although those are beautiful enough! I would sell my soul to have the garden house. It is the most gorgeous, peaceful, perfect garden room I've ever sat down in. Simple, elegant, and classic.

Boo is adorable and I'm sure she'd love it that you're going to make her her very own mouse. As far as eating the mice, I think you all should be required to sing the ditty Bev posted above before gobbling them down. When I posted that photo on FB, my niece asked if there were any blind mice. What I've learned from studying animal behavior is that the wounded and certain types of animals are often disproportionately susceptible to predators and that's why she didn't see any blind ones or any chocolate brown ones.

I would be attracted by the privacy of your lot, but put off that the house was not sited in the middle of the parcel so that I was buffered on all sides, now and in the future. In other words, what's the property behind your house (that you butt up against)? How close is your house to the property line? Who owns that property and how is it used? Any future plans for it? If I were looking at your house, I would be asking these questions, so you and your agent should have answers prepared. Are you in an area where forested tracts are rapidly becoming developed homesites? I live in the Northeast, and the next town over is basically forest and conservation land with multi-acre zoning... a few years ago, a very nice home that was barely (and charmingly) visible from the road, seemingly nestled in the woods, was suddenly exposed when a long driveway was cut through and another house built very close by --- the first house had been built backed up against its own property line. Those are the kinds of things I would be asking myself if I was considering your property. I know that you can't move the house :o), but maybe you need a "story" to explain why you sited the house where you did ("to take advantage of the lovely hillside view", etc.), rather than just to be as far away as possible from your neighbors. I feel for you - it's a beautiful house in its own unique way and I know it will really come alive again for the next owner --- I'm thinking wonderful "Martha Stewart"-style holiday parties and cozy quiet nights by the fire. That said, I am not a big fan of staged houses. I like to see a clean slate so I can let my imagination run wild. When I first looked at your pictures, I thought, "hardship house", as in divorce or bankruptcy, because it seemed so forlorn and emptied out. I would clear out the house out completely (but always keep it fresh and clean for showings), leaving one comfortable seating area with good lighting where people can sit to discuss, review your albums, etc. Maybe that area could have some mini-staging --- couch and comfy chairs, pillows, big coffee table, nice rug a la the Ralph Lauren/upscale ski McMansion look! I'm also impressed with your can-do and flexible attitude... you've been hit with some harsh (if well-meant and accurate) criticism here without getting defensive or hurt. I wish you the best of luck. You are getting some great advice here.

Bringing this back up for consideration. We have enough interested members that Retreat will take place! We would love to have more join us!!! Remember that this year it is a holiday weekend which hopefully will help with travelling. (Columbus Day holiday-US, and Thanksgiving-Canada) We generally leave camp around lunchtime on Sunday (either eating first, taking a bag lunch with us, or we could plan not to have their lunch at all), but we could actually stay all afternoon if we wished. Try the shelled salted peanuts in Williamsburg. The only thing I can suggest for Jamestown is to look for all the Bermuda ties, lol. You'll see this quite a bit in the museum.

Forgot to mention, you stop in the Peanut Shop in Merchants Square. If you like peanut butter, do yourself a favor and buy a couple of jars. It is so delicious! It does require a stir before using.

Oh,and climb aboard the old replica ships in Jamestown and visit the old colony made up of real teepees and their furnishings. Look at how they made the mattresses. Go to the cabin where the old replicated artillery is kept. These attractions are all within the area.
