Left Scotland, yesterday, spent last nite in Belfast, tonite into the Republic of Ireland for remainder of trip.

Great group of travelers, great food, most of the time.#

Windy, cool, warm, but not much rain, thank goodness.

Military Tattoo was fantastic!

Got lots of pics to share.

Just wanted to say Howdy.

Hi Tommie, Depends on the herbicide - but for the most part, I don't worry much about herbicides in compost piles since the microbes are not harmed by such, and those 'critters' have the ability to break down/change those chemicals to some degree, and any degree seems to change the herbicide into a form that is not harmful to plants no matter what the chemical 'shelf-life' is. There are two basic 'types' of herbicides: systemic and non-systemic. I do not have experience with the full range of herbicides, but your County Agricultural Extension Agent and local landscape companies should be able to tell you what herbicide use can be expected on various plants in your 'neck-o-the-woods', and the herbicide companies can tell you whether the product would/could still have any effect on plants after composting. One of the most popular (and powerful) herbicides is a brand of Glysophate (N-phosphonomethyl) glycine, in the form of its isopropylamine salt...Called ROUNDUP, which is sold in a ready-to-use form of 2% concentration per gallon. The strongest form of this Glysophate acidic chemical that I know of is sold as Catt Plex brand (Sanco Industries), used for control of cattails. It is a 53.8% Glysophate concentrate. Incredibly strong, because cattails are REALLY hard to kill. OK - now to partially answer your question: I compost grasses/weeds treated with glysophate and other strong herbicides, because I compost materials obtained free from landscape and lawn care companies that use herbicides regularly. I had concerns too - so accumulated plant refuse that I knew had been treated - composted that material, then set up several trials with vegetables grown in 100% of that compost - and did NOT seen ANY indication of new plant damage/stunting in compost in which herbicides were used on plant materials. The tomatoes and bell pepper plants grew better in the compost that had herbicide-treated material than the compost that didn't. My compost takes about 3 months start-to-finish, and I harvest about a ton of compost a month, so that kind of trial is easy for me to do. Systemic herbicides kill plants by being absorbed through leaves, and transported internally to roots, whereby the chemical interferes with enzyme activity - so basically the plant 'starves/dehydrates' to death. You could pour a solution of 2% RoundUp on plant roots and it will not kill the plant. According to RoundUp tech support, the product has limited viability after spraying. Catt Plex on the other hand, is SO strong (depending on the rate of dilution used), that the product literature states that the chemical could harm the plant if sprayed on green stems, exposed non-woody roots or plant fruit. Normal CYA verbage for a concentrate product with which they have no control over application methods. As long as any/all systemic herbicide-treated plant materials are fully composted through 2 or more screened turns, I personally do not have any concerns about it, no matter what the systemic herbicide chemical is. I'm sure there's some folks who think such chemicals "live forever", but they don't. Not even DDT and Sevin. Robert

Becky, I just got back from Italy a week ago. I am attaching a picture of a roofless cathedral that reminds me of some of the ones in your pictures. I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation despite the airline/ luggage snafus. I apologize for Philadelphia's bad weather (my home town). Nice to see the picture of our skyline. I only had one hour fifteen minutes between flights in Frankfurt on the way home. Sounds like enough time but the flight from Rome to Frankfurt is on a regional airplane and they leave you off on the tarmac and load you onto a bus to get to the terminal. Well, the flight was full of Asians and Midwesterners returning from their tours. Man those people are s-l-o-w. No offense to the Midwest folks in our group, but you sure are not in a hurry. ;) I was sweating bullets as I weaved in and out among the slowest people on earth. Then I ran through the airport (including those people mover things) to get to my gate. Thank heavens boarding was delayed! I even had time to use the bathroom. I had awful jet lag for about three days. I also had the end of Daylight Savings twice -- once in Italy and a week later at home. My internal clock is totally screwed up, plus I completely missed October (was gone three weeks), so it feels like I went directly from late summer to winter. Anyway, my trip was awesome and it sounds like yours was,too. I'd love to see Ireland.

Sue, the Etap hotel is a few steps below a motel 6...quite a few steps in fact. LOL! The rooms were tiny, which were expected but the floor was really grungy and the toilet/shower area were a one piece porta potty plastic unit that had been put into a corner of the room. It was very small and the floor area by the toilet got soaked when you showered. The shower stall area was barely big enough to turn around in. Now I wish I had taken a picture! Patti, I think the house I used to live in was torn down and a new one put in it's place, there were a lot of new homes there. The town was very small, just one street with one tiny restaurant and a coffin maker. That was it...not even a post office. Stacy, yeah, I think I should've learned after our trip out west. Some of it was fun but for the most part they weren't interested in a lot of it. I've downloaded my pictures and will start posting them. Wish I had taken more videos, they are pretty funny because they are so BAD! LOL!

Blood pudding served every morning, but none for me. ##

Sad, but one couple had to fly back to states, today, as her brothers is very very ill.

Will be back in the states Saturday nite, the 22nd.

I was in Belfast last week and rode on "the wheel". LOL I saw some beautiful old buildings. It wasn't as touristy as most places are. I had to hunt for souvenirs.

Amazing, isn't it? It took some of my Frenchies eight weeks to reach NYC on a sailing ship. Grandmother came from Scotland via Ireland later, and a little faster, but arrived pre-Ellis Island.

My mother and I sailed on the Ile de France - less than a week. I always wanted to try the Concord!

My GGGF came over from Longford. I always hoped to visit the Emerald Isle, but never made the trip. Glad it is going well for you.

I wouldn't eat blood pudding either!

Glad you are having a good time. I love blood pudding. Actually they also call it black pudding. It taste like sausage. At least try one bite just to say you did. I love pub grub too.

My first DH was from Belfast and I've been to Ireland 4 times. It really is very green. My DD's cousin now lives in England but was home for a visit a couple of week ago. He posted pictures on facebook. Made me want to hop a plane for a visit.
