The kids and I finally made it to the new house this week and are LOVING it! Lots and lots and lots of lawn to mow. The dirt is simply glorious and I cannot wait to garden in it come spring. We do appear to have moles, I think, so I'll have to read up on those suckers and how to deal with them.

This move has been a complete nightmare but it's almost over now. The moving trailers will be dropped off Monday morning. We'll spend a few days unloading and, of course, more time unpacking boxes and settling in. It will have all be worth it!

I managed to bring a few of the CRW tomato cages but had to let the scrap man take the majority of them. I remembered to bring the lemon grass and aloe vera I got from the spring swap this spring. However, I forgot to bring the lilac bush from a dear friend and the sunchokes I got from Ilene. I set my best shovel by them to dig them up right before hitting the road and then I got distracted and left all of the plants and the shovel. I was four hours from home before I remembered and, I tell you, I got sick to my stomach over it. It's not the plants so much as it is the friends behind the plants. You guys know what I mean.

This new place has quite a few decorative bushes in front of the house. Hubby and FIL butchered them before we got here as they were crowding the sidewalk. I clean them up as best I could but, really, I didn't have much of a clue, either. LOL I'll have to work on getting pictures of them posted for you guys to help identify. I'm clueless about ornamentals but need to get this figured out so I know what I want to keep and what to pull and replace for spring.

Anyway, just wanted to update you guys. I know I'll always be an honorary Okie and you'll never chase me away from this group of crazy gardeners!

Glad you made it to your new home ok. As always I will enjoy reading your post.

Maybe we could send you a truck load of armadillos, that would make you like moles a little better. You may need to build them a cozy den to live in and I'm sure they would like the soft, deep soil.

Agree, it looks like Early Blight on the leaves. Luckily it is easy to control with a good fungicide such as Ortho Garden Disease or Daconil. Not sure about the stem...maybe insect damage, or maybe the stem broke at some point and is trying to heel itself.

I'm so sorry. I would talk to someone else at Medicaid; the whole idea (at least, I thought!) is that Medicaid is for people who haven't got the funds for deductibles & such. If they can't help him, ask them to recommend another source. If he's a Veteran, get him an appointment with a VA social worker; tell them the whole story so that they know that this is a dire emergency. If all else fails, he might go to any emergency room; they cannot by law turn him away. I've heard that they often try to discourage people by ignoring them & letting them sit all day, so if he decides to go to an emergency room, he needs to call an ambulance to take him so that there's a record that he was brought in an actual emergency. Hi Montana, Welcome to the Friendliest Little Gardening Forum in the West! We had a pretty nasty winter here along the Front Range this year—in a very strange way! It was TOO warm! Then when the temps suddenly dropped into the single digits a few times you could hear all the semi-dormant plants screaming! Even my normally-evergreen stuff wasn’t “evergreen” this year! And all along the Front Range people have had sections of evergreens (trees!) die off that are gonna take years to recover! The good news is that when stuff like that happens, at least you can come here for some HUGS to help a little—even if there’s nothing we can do to help with the actual plants! We may not have much helpful advice after a hail storm, but we’re all really good with sympathy—since we all Understand! We’re glad you found us! Skybird P.S. If you ever happen to be trippin’ down this way when we have a swap (spring and fall), we’d love to have you show up! We’ve had folks from all over, including the Western Slope and Kansas, but Montana would be a new Benchmark!

YEA, DIANE!!!! I knew you'd made it there as I've kept up with you on FB & your blog. Guess you're going to have to give the blog a new name since you don't have an earth-burmed house anymore? The kids are going to LOVE being barefoot in the grass!

I don't have a lilac bush but don't worry about the sunchokes. I visited Ilene last weekend and came home with a bag full of 'em. They're going in the ground this weekend so if I can keep them growing, I'll have some to send you next spring. Just remember to remind me?

Glad this hurdle is over for you! Keep us posted!

It is great to hear from you and to know y'all have arrived at your new home and are busy settling in.

I really didn't think you'd "miss" Oklahoma and that clay soil too much until you said the word "moles". Oh boy, are you in for an adventure....and not in a good way. lol Once you've figured out if you have moles or gophers, we'll help you figure out how to deal with them, but it is hard and you're in for a battle. Even with our clay soil, we have moles and voles attempting to "move in" from adjacent areas every now and then.

I hope you know you'll always be one of us, no matter where you live. Hope you, Steve, the kids, and all the animals are well. (I'm assuming y'all brought all the animals with you.)

Congratulations Diane! I can relate to the shovel/sunchoke experience. When we left NJ we lost a number of very dear possessions. Some, it appears, simply didn't make it into the moving truck. I'd grieve for the shovel more than the sunchokes. Someone here is certain to be able to help you with another start.

Man, this unpacking business is just about to kill me. LOL I took tonight off just to lounge and be lazy!

Paula, thanks -- I'd love another start of the 'chokes. Boy, I could just kick myself for that.

Glenda, we're up in northeastern Missouri now, around Monroe City. We're absolutely loving it up here. Feels like winter is here already, though!

Dawn, we only brought the two dogs, four kittens, and about a dozen chickens. We sold and gave away the goats and rest of the chickens (and the hogs a while back).

I'm going to have the blog on a new domain soon, to kick off our new adventure so I'll let you guys know when it's ready to go. Brand new palette indeed! :-)

Btw, my forester friend came over and told me we have cherry, peach, apple, and mulberry trees. And I now live roughly an hour from Stark Bros. nursery, she said. Yay!

I wondered if you'd attempt to move the pigs. lol

After the way the goats invaded the garden, are you going to have goats again? Or, maybe take a break from goats until you have time to build pens just for them?

Hooray both for the fruit trees and for being so close to Stark Brothers. Lucky, lucky you!

We look forward to hearing about your family's continuing adventure....and I hope Steve is happy with his new job. (In this economy, though, it is hard to be unhappy about having a job---any job!)

Don't feel too bad about the weather there feeling like winter. This morning, when I went outside around 5 a.m., it was 47 degrees here and the wind chill was 45. Of course, this is our first little burst of fall weather and it won't last as we're supposed to be back into the mid to upper 80s by Wed. or Thurs.
