Problem, problem, -Hold Your Nose

Last night our dog was outside. He apparently got in contact with a skunk. As strange as it seems, it just seems that his nose and mouth got it. I don't know if he was sprayed or if the skunk had previously sprayed and he licked up part of it. Anyway he brought the perfume into the house. He was extrememly uncomfortable around the mouth and I took a clean face cloth and washed his mouth out well. To-day only his mouth and nose smell but the house " stinks". Do any of you have any suggestions about what we can do to get rid of the odor in the house besides just leaving the windows open?

Oak leaves.....I have been dealing with them my whole life. I currently have a dozen or so mature (aka huge) oaks. The volume of leaves I have every fall is mind boggling. The most efficient removal method I have used is as follows. Rake or blow leaves out of flower beds and away from the house and into the middle of each section of the yard being careful not to make piles. Then mulch the leaves with your mower going over them several times. Change your mower over to bagging and vacuum the mulched particles. You can then add this to your compost pile, bag them in tough contractor plastic bags, or if your and idiot burn the particles in the street next to the curb. Haha. By mulching first and then bagging, the volume of leaves is reduced at least 20 fold or more. The few leaf particles missed by the mower and left deep in the St. Augustine will be unseen, beneficial, and gone in a few days. The average city yard covered with leaves deeply will take 2 to 3 large bags if mulched enough. No big deal. It works. I've done it this way for years.

Problem(s) with my pears

Probably the most likely is scab since that is a common pear disease. I have seen apples with scab cracking like that so I expect pears could do it as well. The disease you name is not common (I have never heard of it) and so that lowers the odds a lot that you have it. Follow up to your own post to add pictures. Thanks for the input so far. A few other pieces of info. 1) I increased the amount of water (sometimes sequential days, sometimes longer duration) starting about 3 weeks ago when I first noticed the problem (thinking it was not ENOUGH water that was the problem - I'm sure that's a common response). 2) On the edges of the lawn where there is treated lumber edging I've been dowsing the lawn w/ a hose since that seemed to be more yellow a few weeks ago and/or I thought perhaps my Melnor fan sprinkler wasn't hitting the edges enough. Those edges seem very lush and green. 3) On some spots near the Yucca palm I have where I drove in palm food spikes, the lawn is also noticeably greener (circles 8"-12" right where the spikes went in). So I'll experiment a little w/ the watering volume & frequency (less of each, though maybe in a small patch I'll do more.) Will keep apprised.

Hopefully your ductwork is in good condition and properly sized. The fan should be sized for the bathroom. Here are some guidelines: Small rooms: For bathrooms up to 100 square feet in area, HVI (Home Ventilation Institute) recommends that an exhaust fan provide 1 CFM per square foot (approximately eight air changes per hour) to properly ventilate the bathroom. Example: Bathroom is 8'x5' (with 8' ceilings). Multiply 8 x 5 = 40ft. Bathroom area is 40ft. At 1 cfm per square foot the minimum recommendation is a fan rated at 40 cfm. Larger rooms: For bathrooms above 100 square feet in area, HVI recommends a ventilation rate based on the number and type of fixtures present, according to the following table: Toilet 50 CFM Shower 50 CFM Bath Tub 50 CFM Jetted Tub 100 CFM Duration of ventilation: HVI recommends that the fan be left on for 20 minutes after use of the bathroom. A timer is a good solution, allowing the fan to turn off automatically at the proper time. One thing you should know is most fans only produce 50% of the rated cfm because of undersized and poorly installed ducts. And by deskunk, I literally mean how to get the skunk smell out if one of your pets (or god forbid, YOU) have tangoed with one of these smelly crittersÂ.its actually pretty simple, you just need 4 ingredients. White vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and water. If your carpet or couch are affected, I recommend a steam-type cleaner, I used a "Little Green Machine," made by Bissell.

For carpeting (or upholstery, IÂm guessing), sprinkle a liberal coating of baking soda on the affected areaÂ.donÂt be afraid to use too muchÂweÂll take care of it in a moment or two. Now, if you donÂt have a carpet/upholstery cleanerÂyouÂre going to have to let the next step dry for a bit before you can vacuum it upÂbut spray some of the white vinegar directly onto the baking soda. ItÂll fizz a bit, maybe a lot, depending how much of each ingredient youÂre using. My entire house reeked before we did thisÂand I think if not all the smell, we got most of the smell out in about 10 minutes.

If youÂre using a carpet cleanerÂspare yourself the spraying and just add as much white vinegar to the resivoir as you would use cleaning solutionÂ.fill to where its to be filled with warm waterÂ.and apply to the carpet. I recommend spraying it on and letting it do its thing with the baking soda for a few seconds before extracting it all.

For the pet whoÂs been affectedÂ.do this as quickly as possible after the encounter. However, I rinsed our dog w/plain water last night and some shampoo, just to make sure her eyes were ok, and left her sleep on the old couch in the garageÂ.so about 7-8 hours had passed before we tried thisÂ.

Mix two quarts of hydrogen peroxide with 1/2 a cup baking soda and rub into the petÂs fur. Let sit for just a moment or twoÂas long as you can with a wiggly critter. Then, rinse them well, and voila! TheyÂll be clean and should be stink free. If it doesnÂt work, its safe to repeatÂhopefully youÂll be lucky like we were and not have to repeat a second time.

They sell some skunk odor remover at walmart in the pet department. I use it in my laundry for stinky clothes.

A friend suggested burning cadles, so I have 4 lit in the kitchen and that seems to be helping. I mixed a bit of soda and peroxide and have wiped his nose and mouth with that a couple of times and it is improving. I put some soda in a large bowl and I'm sprinkling vinegar on that. It bubbles way up and I really think it is going to work. If it doesn't I'll try boiling vinegar.

I have many allergies and used to get terrible heacaches from them. I used to boil cider vinegar and the smell would cure my headache. People would come in and comment that I was making pickles and I'd tell them I was curing a headache.
